    Hi all,

Need some advice from all you lovely people.

I went into a suit hire place yesterday with Matt and my dad they both tried on the suits and they both looked amazing, they both like the silk grey suits with matching waistcoats, white shirt and silver cravat and hankie. We were told we could only hire these suits and not buy them as they were expensive suits and they didnt sell them. Thy quoted me £885 as need 8 suits in total and we would have to put 50% deposit down. My dad asked about if people spill something on them etc and they said for an extra £200 per suit this could insure them for this. I have looked into buying them and searched a few sites Next have some for sale and could get the jacket, trousers, waistcoat, shirt, cravat and hankie this would cost a total of £1245 for 8 suits but then at least I have brought them and if people do get things spilled on it or if they go out to smoke and catch the suit then I wont be charged for suits I wont own.

So where do I go from here? - Any advice you can give me would be great

    xx

Sounds like a rip off! Whilst they are expensive suits, you could buy a half decent suit for the cost of the insurance! When we tried some on, the insurance was around 6 pound per suit and this also covered the cost of dry cleaning! The rental of each suit was around 115 pound including waistcoat etc so similar to yours per suit. We were also advised that it might be an idea for mark to buy his and have his tailored and then hire out regular fit ones.

i thought £200 per suit was very expensive i was expecting that for 8 suits not per suit so now Matt and my dad think we might as well spend the exta and by the suits rather than hiring them x

We have hired ours...but didnt cost that much as we are only have five in total and there was a promotion on at the time. I would go and try some suits on that you can buy to see which ones you prefer x x

adam and his best man hired theirs from Moss and they've got the pale grey morning suits with all the extras for £95 each. I think the £200 is a security deposit held against your credit card, they won't actually take any of it if they come back in decent condition. Basically I reckon they'd need to be completely ruined for them to charge you it!!

We have got our suits & they were £106 each which includes £5 insurance against damage/spillage on each suit. I think what you've been quoted sounds odd & you should try somewhere else if you do go ahead & hire them!

oh sara if that is what they do then i wouldnt be so bothered the way the lady explained it was that we had to pay the £885 for the hire of the suits then if we wanted to security deposit then we had to actually pay them an extra £200 per suit aswell which had me worrying xx

Think the insurance is rather expensive, were only paying an extra £10/£15 per suit to insure it against damages! For the price you may aswell buy them weve paid just under £800 to hire 7 suits, one was free! I wasnt happy it cost that much to hire as I would rather have bought them for the extra cost if you can afford it then buy them at least everyone gets a suit to keep.

that is true liza and think that is where Matt and my dad are coming from that we would be paying at least £885 to hire the suits and we can buy everything for £1245 and then we have 8 suits to keep and dont have the worry of the hired suits being ruined by people x

well I THINK that's what they do, but don't quote me on it! It'd be worth calling to double check though. May I ask, what kind of suits are you hiring? Because I can see where you're coming from with the argument for buying over hiring with minimal price difference but if its tailcoats (morning suits) then are they ever going to wear them again?! Or are you going for the shorter jackets? xx

Hi, I would also shop around. H2b got a suit pakage, which includes suit, waistcoat, cravat and hankie for £85 which at the time I thought was expensive but am realising its not a bad price. Like you, we needed quite a few and h2b insisted on paying for everyone's suit so that's a grand off the budget :(

The only things they are paying for are the insurance of £6, shoe hire and top hat (which I was really surprised he wanted).

You could always buy them, next have lovely occasion wear. You could even sell them after and recoup some money, xx.

We went to Greenwoods for our suits. Gav hired his and it only cost around £90 for trousers, shirt, waistcoat, jacket (tails) and cravat and hanky. We bought suits for the best man, my dad and usher as it was something they could keep and also they had a 50% off everything offer so the suits worked out at approx £80 each including shirt. I'd definitely have a look at Greenwoods, as they always seem to have offers on as well.

Have a look at Matala* & BH* - we looked yesterday and M have a nice one for £55 per suit. They are only going to be worn for a day and if you buy them then you can always sell them afterwards or the person wearing the suit may want to buy it to keep it... Worth a look :-)

We are buying ours, some of them might buy their own and keep them but £55 for a suit is a bargain compaired to hiring when you could get the wrong suits on the day. That has happened twice at weddings we have been too where the shop have said they didnt have the size available to have sent other sizes. My H2B was an usher in September, should have had 32" trousers and they sent him 36 and 30 trousers and they sent 38! Needless to say he looked like a drowned rat! Thats when we decided to buy, they wont be the most wonderful suits in the world but they will fit and we will sell them after so wins all round :-)

another thing to point out is that by enlarge, the insurance won't be worth the paper it's printed on. If you do accidentally spill drink, or suffer a cigarette burn, then they will just turn round and tell you that the accident could have been prevented in the first place. £200 please! Kerching!:-)

Like the others have said- That's £1600 you could be putting towards something else far more constructive in my opinion xx

It looks like you ladies have not had a great experience with suit hire shops, I run a menswear dept in a bridal shop and don't have the problems that I have read about above, if we are sent the wrong sizes we change them to ensure our Grooms and their party have the correctly fitting attire for the day, it's not a common problem where I work anyhow, I always make sure the utmost care is taken when measuring and that every suit is checked and prepped before our guys come into the store, if anything is not right size wise it is amended before the customer gets here, we don't tolerate sloppy mistakes where someone's wedding is concerned, it makes me glad to be where I am and a little sorry that you ladies don't have this sort of service available to you, I'll have no trouble getting our suits and don't see the point of buying because the style will be a one off wear for the day.
Also our t and c's are only £5.50 and they cover you for all accidental damage, our average hire is £99 which includes the dress shoes too.
I would definitley recommend that you shop around for the best deals

too true Clive, I know what you mean, I just don't get it, everything with the word wedding or bridal in front of it seems to hike up the prices and yes, even I feel like there are a lot of businesses out to rip off happy couples, we're having a job keeping the prices down on things we know don't justify the cost, the only thing I think we have really spoilt ourselves with is the venue

Got my suits in sale- reduced from £200 each to £50 each. Waistcoats and cravats were about £30 each and the men are all buying their own shirts and shoes. For us, it worked out cheaper to buy than to hire and they'll all have suits they can wear again. I'll probably put waistcoats on the bay after. x

MrsEminson2b - I think the insurance cost must be new, because we didn't get offered that when we hired. I think you're better off buying if you can get the same (including everything) at the same price or thereabouts.
