Now, this is something i was completely unaware of until BFGW this week.

A lovely lady at our venue, suggested going one more than this and having a completely Polysteren cake and they have a shop bought plain cake in the kitchen that they will cut and serve!!!!

Excellent way to save a few ££££ and the guests are none the wiser!

How fantastic is this idea.......we could not decide on cake, H2B not a huge cake fan and neither of us fancied spending hundreds on something we will only have 1 or 2 slices of

    What do you ladies think???

I saw that too and agree it is a fabulous idea! No one will ever know- and like you said, its will definately save on the pennies! I am not a big cake fan either and to be honest I am not bothered at all about having one!

i mentioned this to our cake maker as I wanted a 4th tier but she said the money is in the decoration, not the materials to make a cake and so it would still be 100 for an extra tier :( Therefore, do check on the price difference as it may not always be worth it.

That's a great idea! I'd never have thought of that... I would have thought that cake decorators would have charged in terms of decoration rather than the materials used to make the cake though, but I guess you're saving on time too, and if you mess it up there's no need to replace cake, you just grab another chunk of polystyrene and start again!

... and if you provide your own polystyrene and icing etc...

Something else I might need to look into! I was considering getting polystyrene cake toppers though, you can colour them to fit your theme too x

they are known in the trade as Dummy cakes, usually used for taking to wedding fairs etc instead of wasting real cake they use the dummies to show off the icing etc. I'm not sure how many bakers would be prepared to lose money on this though, after all making cakes is their living and their reputaion means alot to them. If you are doing it yourself then thats ok ;) just make sure Great Aunt Mable doesn't cut herself a slice lol

Lol Cupcake I think I've dyed my hair a few too many times. I used to think surely that fruit cake must be going manky now when i went to wedding fairs before and saw the same people with the same cakes.

How are you going to do ' the cake cutting' or are you missing this out. I know this saves a lot of money but I'm not sure about it. I think you dont have to spend £00's on a cake if you dont want to. Most supermarkets do a cake with plain icing and different sizes for tiering. Put some ribbon and silk/edible flowers on it and voila .... wedding cake that looks like it costs hundreds and no pretending... Also ask the cake maker to make a plain 'birthday cake' it will know £00's off the price ... you'll be amazed how much you pay for adding the word wedding...

During the war brides didn't have the ingredients required to make wedding cakes so they used to make a very small cake (saving their ration coupons for weeks beforehand) and then they would make a dummy cake that went over the top of the real cake so that it still looked good. xxx
