Well, ever since me and my H2B got engaged we have been discussing last names... mine is currently Rose and his is Duffy, nothing wrong with Duffy but my preference is Rose (I love my surname!). Unfortunately my H2B is very adamant that I should take his name, which I have agreed to, although he did say I could keep my maiden name for work as I am a primary school teacher so hear my last name a lot everyday!! However, I think if I change my name I should change it in all contexts as it would get confusing.

So I was just wondering if any of you have been more successful in persuading your H2B to take your last name??

I wouldn't even ask him to change it, i hate my name and can't wait to get rid of it MIL wants me to keep it as she loves it (its Braithwaite and going to be Holmes) my OH is very proud of his grandparents and where his name comes from though so its never been an issue with us xx

My surname is Cunning and my h2b always jokes that he'd like to double barrel so that he can say "cunning is my middle name" haha but he would never actually take it. I don't mind though as I love his name :)

I wouldn't even ask my H2b to take my surname, IMO its not the traditional thing to do a woman has always taken the mans name.

That said we aren't in the dark ages and each to their own.

We do have a four year old son though who has H2b's surname so would be weird if me and his dad had the same surname and him with a different surname.

Nope - my h2b's first name is the same as my dads - Dave so would be very weird for him to have same exact name lol.

It will be weird for me to be a Finch though, but I'll get used to it :)

No, and I wouldn't even ask him as he'd be offended. I do know a couple (now divorced) who took the brides name as she wanted to keep the Polish name going. Since they divorced, he has kept her name too

I couldn't wait to get rid of my old surname mind you it was my ex's name lol. got a posh double barrelled surname now which can be a right pain sometimes so I just use the last bit at times but its a hundred times better than my previous one x

Nope, no way would he take mine lol.

I'm taking his, but keeping mine professionally; that was our compromise. Well, that and him wearing a ring; he didn't want to wear one so I said that was fine, but that I wouldn't take his name at all if he opted not to, as it's important to me that he wears one.

I'd like to have double-barrelled but it sounds ridiculous with our names :-s

Dan would have taken my name if it had meant anything to me. But sadly out of our deadbeat dads mine is worse than his! I did take his name, but we are going to be changing them to his stepdad's next month.

Yes! My h2b is taking my maiden name, he isn't particularly attached to his name as his biological father was not a nice man and I love my surname, most members of my family have taken a real shine to him and he feels more part of my family than he ever did his own so it seemed the logical thing to do!

We had a discussion when we first got together and out of the blue my partner said he was taking my maiden name. I am more of a traditional person so I am taking his last name. I like his last name because it is unusual, only downside is people spell it so many different ways! x

we discussed this subject before naming our first child, i was pregnant & we were thinking about names, found a first & middle name, then discussed surname, i made it clear that my name dies out with me (my uncle is infertile due to mumps at such a young age) (i have my mums maiden name but my siblings have their fathers names) so i made it clear that due to the age of my name (we can trace our name back to "the decendants of cain) i didnt want to lose that completely, so we agreed to doublebarrell. the only time when this has been an issue was when we had a row with h2b family & he decided he was dropping his name & taking mine, but i wont let him do that. we gave our kids a double barrelled name knowing we would be double barrelled.

It shouldn't matter really. Just marrying the man you love should be enough. If you are doing traditional then stick with his. I like his suggestion to takebhis surname but use your maiden as your work one. Xx
