Send as soon as you have confirmed bookings with your venue(s).

The more notice you give people the better I say then no one has an excuse unless it's an unforseen circumstance.

We sent our save dates out 18 months before as you can book a holiday that far in advance and we didn't want people missing the wedding. We then sent out our official invites at the 5 month mark with the deadline of RSVP being at the 3 month mark x

I would do a year before and invites 4-6 months before as you still want time to chase RSVPs.

I sent mine 10 months before but I think it's all relative to your time scale. Personally I didn't want to send them too early as the point could be totally lost as people will think 'that's ages away' and possibly put them in a safe place never to be seen again lol. I would say a year, to 18 months tops if your is summer 2016

So glad to have found this! I have designed my own save the dates ready to print as we have just booked our venue. I thought I was being too prepared but now I have seen people saying send them out 18 months before I have panicked! My wedding is in 18 months so I'm guessing I should get a move on and get them sent out? I was originally not going to send them out as we only have around 40 people coming to the ceremony and they are all close family, but we thought it would be a good way just to let everybody know the date :)

Yes I would start thinking about sending them out now Emma :)

We're not bothering with save the dates as like you we just have close family coming who already know the date anyway, so we're saving money by not sending them out x

I think it depends on your guests. We were going to wait until 11 months before but at 14 months before we kept getting asked as people wanted to ensure they didn't book holidays which would clash. So we sent them out just over 12 months before and people appreciated it. I would worry 18 months is too far in advance and people would potentially lose the save the date.

If we were to send out save the dates, we decided we would do so around the 18 month mark, with invitations 5 months in advance (early Jan for a June 2016 wedding). Maybe consider sending magnets so they can stick them to the fridge and not lose them or have an excuse to forget - although everyone that truly wants to be there will be there and won't even need a save a date to ensure that they are :) x

Thanks ladies, I don't really think I need to send them out but I think it will be a good way of letting everyone know, as because we have only just booked not many people know the date. There are only a few people that would book holiday's in advance which are my parents and grandparents and I don't think they will miss my wedding haha! We won't have to post them as everybody lives within 30 mins of me so I can drop them off so we will save money that way :) x

Bonus if you don't need to worry about posting them :) we were seriously considering giving out save the dates and probably would have, but word got around so fast that we had booked that we just found it would have been a bit pointless and a waste of money for us if we had gone ahead and given them out! x

I don't think the STD will cost too much. Since all my guests don't live in England, I'm thinking about sending the STD about 18 months before the wedding, so people can keep their eyes open for tickets sales :) Also, most of my h2b family lives away from him, so I think it would be useful for them not forget about it :)
