my last post got me wondering and with more and more people swaying away from the traditional wedding breakfast what has everyone decided on for the day/evening and how much is it costing?

Im *thinking* possibly a hog roast, stuffing, salads, potatoes etc for the day and a hot/cold buffet for the evening.

    Planning to perfection <3

My OH and I have our wedding ceremony at 3pm and having a drinks reception/canapés as the "starter" afterwards and also during photos being taken. Then having a carvery sit down meal. Dessert won't be served but we are having a sweet buffet with a chocolate fountain in the evening with extra canapés for anyone wanting something savoury. The catering for carvery and canapés is under 1200 to cater for 60 covers plus £275 for fountain and sweet buffet.

We did want a hog roast originally but the local caterers for that either weren't good quality or turned out to have hidden fee's for ridiculous things. Really disappointed but our chosen caterer is magic

We have gone traditional with ours, as we knew we wanted our reception in a specific hotel which could accommodate H2B's severely disabled sister, and that was the package offered. It will be a wedding breakfast at 4:00 followed by a buffet at about 9:00. We will probably serve some cake after the service while photos are being done, but not the wedding cake, that will be later.

    Ours was traditional.

We had welcome drinks and canapes when our guests arrived at the reception venue at 3pm after our church ceremony, then traditional 3 course wedding breakfast at 5pm ish followed by hog roast and salads, jacket pots, rolls etc. for the evening buffet.

My fiance and I were thinking originally along the buffet route for our guests - weighed up costs and thought would be a cheaper option, however we have talked about this numerous times and we will not be having a huge wedding now, no more than 50 guests inclusive of wedding party so have decided would be nicer to have a sit down meal, not that there is anything wrong with a buffet just feel a sit down is more wedding..ey. The fun part now, sorting out what the courses will be.

We're having a pie and mash menu. Choice of pies with mash, mushy peas and gravy. Plus starte of evening prawn cocktail or leek and potato soup and dessert is bake well tart or Eton mess. In the evening we are having BBQ food without the BBQ.

Drinks with the main meal are either wine or cider! :)

This was my compromise with my mum as she wanted traditional and I wanted afternoon tea sit down. So non traditional 3 course meal oh and cheese boards to end!

I guessed you might be from the North. We're paying £56pp for the day (4 x canapes then the 3 course meal as above) and then £17.50pp for the evening (selection of 6 items); I actually thought ours was pretty cheap compared to other venues we looked at, esp as the quality is very good and they've been so accommodating with allowing everyone choices! Our food comes in at a whopping £4.5k and that's for just 63 for the day and 90 for the evening! :-s

The South is VERY expensive lol.

I'm in the north east and our day guests are £45 per head and evening buffet £12.00? Our package has 50 day guests and the same 50 for their buffet with use of full castle grounds and we get our bridal suite etc for £3100. We have lots of extra heads though and room hire for the ceremony so coming to a lot more than the package cost.

We get the basic buffet option for those 50 people which is sausage and bacon baps. For the extra 50 evening heads were mixing it up and going for a different option which includes dips, wedges etc. so I'll have the same mount of food but a bigger choice to spread

Anyway food options we have gone for goats cheese tart for starter, roast chicken for main, chocolate mousse for dessert. Plus there will me alternatives for veggie/coeliac/gluten free people :) keeping it simple really.

We are having a hot buffet. After attending a friends wedding and hardly touching a thing on my plate it made more sense. not everyone is going to like the same thing so I don't want to waste my money on food that may not get eaten. I also don't want my guests going hungry. We are having a mix of Italian and south American food so there is something for everyone. its half the cost too which is always a bonus. =]

I just read that as well barbie... Mine is only £20 a head inc canapes and not inc drinks which we're going through the venue for with a local winery at a buy and return basis. 9k is about 85-90% of our overall estimate for total cost for everything. Blimey.

Victoria: we're spending about £9k on food and drink, for 63 day guests and 90 evening. Which is fairly steep even where we live! So £80 pp just for food seems really high to me!

That said, we looked at a lot of venues with flat rate/package charge of like £150/160 pp. They tried to go on about how it included venue hire, red carpets, etc, but basically you were paying that for food and drink; and not much at that! Ours is pretty good in that everything is separate, to an extent: we have a £6k minimum spend on food and drink but it's very flexible beyond that, inc being able to offer guests lots of choices for the sit-down meal.

Maybe it's just because where we live things might be cheaper I'm not sure but I'm just blown away by the 9k cost for you guys. But also we're having an informal set up with canapé starters then carvery meal and dessert being sweet buffet and fountain later

London and the South East is pricey; about half our food and drink cost is going on alcohol, and that's because we're putting £2.5k behind the bar (the drinks for the day are 'only' costing £36 pp (2 welcome drinks; 1/2 bottle wine; 1 glass champagne). I thought our food costs were pretty good though (£6 pp for 4 canapes; £50pp for 3 course meal with choices) until I saw the prices on here!

That said as I said some venues were charging £160pp for what was essentially just food and drink; they acted like they included extras but those extras were negligible.

1/2 bottle of wine per person on tables

We also have a marquee, but we are very lucky that we don't have to pay for it as its my uncles!! very kindly giving us a freebie!!!

I do live on the south coast, so things are quite a bit cheaper then London! :-)

    Everyone's food sounds so delicious!

I'm shocked at how expensive food can be though, especially down south and in London. We had a 3 course meal with coffee/tea, then a large buffet including items like mini burgers, wraps, wedges etc. We spent £2000 for our package which included all the food, venue hire, bridal suite, table linen, red carpet etc.

The greatest thing you'll ever learn
