hey all, i've started to think about what type of dress will look best on me. I'm only 5ft 2 and worried of choosing a dress that swamps me, also im a size 10 (not big i know) but my stomach is quite large it looks like im bloated and i would like something to try to cover that a little. People keep asking me which shape of dress will i be looking at and I have no idea. People have told me that I should narrow it down so my time at the dress shop is more productive but i literally have no clue. Empire? a-line? mermaid? and many more styles, People have made me feel that its silly going into a shop and trying on every shape dress and then having to go through different styles of the shape I like. So does anyone have any ideas on what would look good on me?

Danielle, I know this goes against what you have been told beut honestly the best option is to go in a just try the different styles on.
You don't know what will fit your shape until you actually start to see them on your body as everyone is different.
As for the shopping being productive, there is no need to buy your dress in the first shop / on the first day. You can go and try on the different shapes as a starting point and then see what you like from there and go back another day.
Also, the shop assistants will be able to help when they see you and when they see you in certain dresses will recommend something else.

Thank you Emily I feel better now in my original plan to try all shapes, I really need to learn to step back from other peoples opinions (my familys haha) they just made me feel like the assistants would be getting annoyed with me and that made me anxious, I'm not a difficult person (usually) and didnt want to seem difficult to them.

No don't worry about it. Its their job to advise people on what suits them and they have more experience in it than anyone else. My dress was picked up by one of the shop assistants. She was fantastic and really got it perfect.
At the end of the day, they wont get finny with you because they want you to buy your dress from them.

People who work in bridal shops would actually tell you the complete opposite - it's better to go in with a completely open mind and try on as many different styles as possible so you can work out what you like and what suits you best. As Emily said, they are there to advise you and have so much experience, I wouldn't worry about it at all!
Although I had an idea of what I wanted when I went dress shopping, I certainly didn't have my mind set on it and tried on lots of different styles just so I could rule loads out. The assistant I had was so helpful - I just asked her to pick dresses out for me as I found it really hard choosing dresses out of hundreds... She was really honest with me as well and told me when something really didn't suit me. She actually said one dress was "hideous" and made me take it off straight away lol.
Go with an open mind and enjoy trying lots of different styles. You will find out what suits you best even if you can't imagine it now.

Who are these people - they've obviously never been dress shopping! Just because you might not buy a dress the first time you go to a shop doesn't mean that the appointment wasn't successful either.
The best thing to do is to try lots of styles on otherwise you won't know if they suit or not. If you find a dress - great! If not then at least you will have a clearer picture of what you want.
I have a lovely belly too, if you get an A-line dress that may help you. Take a look in my albums I have put some pics my dress in there.

The girls that said it knew what they wanted and just looked at those styles until they found one they liked. I did see a couple of dresses I liked when I was 17, I loved the idea of a pink ball gown (looking back it was like a massive party dress one of my children would wear) too when 17 but I'm 30 now and want something more mature looking haha and thanks I will go have a look

I'm only 5ft tall and about a size 8. Like the others have said go in with an open mind. However, I would advise to steer clear of the ballgown style dresses. Being petite I found they didn't do an awful lot for me - made me look as wide as I was tall.
Ive ended up with a trumpet style dress - not what I thought I'd end up with as was looking mainly at A line initially. It's fit and flare, but not as fited as a mermaid style if that makes sense. Mine is M0ri L££ 1957 to give you an idea.

Lindsey your dress is lovely. Reminds me more of a dropped wait A-line. I tried a few of those on and they looked lovely on my 5'2" size but I don't want my waist on show too much because I don't want to look wonky. Went for an A-Line in the end.

I'm 5ft2, and had only given birth about a month ago before I chose my dress. I went in thinking that I wanted the poofy princess dress, but found that it just didn't suit me. I ended up going for a mermaid dress which makes me look a lot taller and skinnier than I actually am!

I agree with everyone else Danielle, just go with an open mind. Ask them to select some dresses for you to try as they are so used to seeing people and having a good idea of what might suit their body shape. They will ask if you want bling or not etc and then just enjoy the experience x

I REALLY wanted a ballgown but when I tried one on, I felt awful. There just felt like there was too much material and felt like I was dragging it around the room. I also tried a mermaid style which didn't feel quite right either so I went somewhere in the middle. You'll know as soon as you try it if it's right for you or not.

Hi Danielle, I am 5ft 2 and a size 10 (my tummy also looks bloated lol, some days more than others as I have IBS) I really wanted a ball gown type and it's mainly what I tried on. I have gone for one that has a dropped waist to my hips as I felt it pulled me in, in all the right places but has the skirt of a ball gown dress if that makes sense. I think you just know when you have on your dress. I never tried on any mermaid styles as I knew that wasn't what I wanted however I wish I had tried one on just to say I did lol. xx
