So after getting married nearly a year ago we are now trying for a baby. I had hoped that we would try sooner, but we wanted to upsize first, and although we accepted an offer on our current house and agreed a purchase on another one just after Easter, it has taken forever to exchange contracts. The current house is so small that we didn't want to risk having a baby while still there, as there would be so much extra stuff and the house would seem really cluttered, so more difficult to sell. As it is we still haven't exchanged, that should happen this week, but I decided enough was enough as I'm nearly 33, and it does seem like formalities now. I came off the pill at the end of May, but in the first month my husband was away at the time that we really needed to be trying. We tried properly for the first time in my last cycle, but would have been stunned if it had happened. We're on the second attempt now. Fortunately my periods seem to have settled quite quickly after coming off the pill, but my cycle has never been exactly the same every month, it's between 30-32 days. I've been doing lots of research online as to how to boost my chances, like taking vitamins, reducing alcohol and caffeine (I pretty much survive on caffeine so that isn't easy), watching my temperature and mucus, testing for ovulation, regular intercourse. All advice welcome though, I really hope to conceive quickly. I know my mum had trouble and ended up having treatment, but I'm very different to her physically. I'm just hoping it's not already too late, I know they say 35 is when it's time to worry, but you have to try for over a year before looking at treatment which would take me close to 34. I really wish we could have started trying sooner.

Interested in what you think about whether you should stay lying down for a while after intercourse. Some people say you should to allow gravity to assist, others say it makes no difference.

I have no experience of trying for a baby but my advice would be not to overthink it otherwise you're probably going to stress yourself out which will not only make conceiving harder but will also put strain on yourself and your relationship. Just keep trying and if it's meant to be it will happen. Good luck xx

Best advice I can give is just relax and enjoy the s*x don't make it a chore as that wil put stress on what should be fun. keep track of your menstrual as can sort of pin point ovulation period. And do what feels comfortable :) have fun ;) x

As someone who has been trying for a baby (18 months now to be exact) and still not luck I'm not sure I can be of any assistance lol! We have had a miscarriage and 2 chemical pregnancies in that time and I think the stress of wanting it so badly before the wedding and with moving home etc it hasn't been the easiest thing to do. I second what advice Flossie gave - don't try too hard and don't put too much pressure on yourself - I know its easier said then done - We've now decided being so close to the wedding were now going to wait till after.
In regards of vitamins its mainly the Folic Acid I would adv to take constantly - after intercourse my best mate swears by putting her legs up the wall (for gravity to help) lol it must work as she recently found out she's expecting baby number 2!! Ovulation kits are the way forward if you want to track and do it properly. That way you'll know when your ovulating and that's the highest percentage of the month your going to be most fertile. Try having intercourse every 2-3 days to help OH 'build up' lol!
If you ever want anyone to talk to give me a shout! I also have long cycles of 30-32 days. All the best xx

as a mum of four ( eldest is older than most of you i think ) my first thought is you came off pill at end of May and we are only in July , you are already talking about taking your temp etc .... my advice to you is calm down.. stop making it so clinical ... you need to have fun ,make love for the sake of it not because it is a means to an end.

i love the putting you legs up the wall advice .... if you are going to try the gravity thing then its your pelvis /womb that needs to be tilted upwards not just your legs ... so maybe a quick headstand would be in order.

Haha! Headstand lala I literally just LOL'd!! I should've been more clearer lol!!

Legs up the wall and pelvis tilted forward - like you used to do when you were younger with your hands on your hips holding at an angle! must admit its not the easiest position to get into but its worked both times for her :o) xx

Headstands are the one bit of gymnastics I did actually master at school. Kayleigh I'm so sorry you've had such a difficult time with it. I've always wanted desperately to be a mum which is why I'm getting a bit anxious about it, especially as I'm in my thirties. I had such a strong belief about sex only being for within marriage that trying before getting married simply wasn't an option. I'm just terrified of it not working at all or finding that I've already left it too late.

im a mum of two (oldest is 2 and youngest is 10 weeks) my first wasnt planned but my second was best advice like most people have said is calm down and relax the more you restrict yourself with timings and temperature the more stress you put yourself under and stress is a big no no when trying to conceive enjoy the experience and the time you get with your hubby it may take a few week or it may take a few year everyone is different if you really are that anxious speak to your doctor they should be able to advise you the best but more often than not they will tell you not to worry hope it all goes well and you have fun in the process ;) xx

Although I have no kiddies I would definitely advise to try not to stress about it. I know a girl who married and struggled to conceive so badly that every day was analysed and s*x lost its appeal and stressed them out. When they decided to put TTC on hold and went on a cruise they chilled out and she found out she was pregnant a few weeks later :) hope it comes easily for you *no pun intended!!*xx

Having tried for a year for my little boy the biggest piece of advice I can give you is relax. Try not to overthink it. Easier said than done I know. We plan on trying again straight after wedding and I hope I can let nature take it's course. I took Pr3gnacar3 and my partner also took the mans one the last couple months. I let it take over my life and it became a chore. Sometimes it can take a while once coming off the pill which is why I choose not to go back on it. I also have longer cycles so didn't ovulate on day 14 like most people say they do. If u really want to find out when u ovulate test for a couple of months to see and then forget about it. The month I actually got pregnant I decided to throw away the ovulation monitor and go with the flow.

Kayleigh did you ever get any testing due to your losses? I lost 2 babies and they said they don't run test unless you lose 3. Someone told me if I got pregnant again to try taking low dose aspirin. I ran it last my GP who ran it past the consultant and they both agreed it wouldn't do any harm so I could try it. Don't know if it's what worked but I took it until 37 weeks and I now have an almost 2 year old!! I'll be taking it next time too

The ovulation tests are so annoying. They say you should test between 10:00am and 8:00pm, but not have a drink within two hours before. That makes it night on impossible for me to test at a sensible time on a work day, as I usually feel that I need to drink a lot. I've had negative tests even when symptoms indicate otherwise. Apparently the Cl3ar Blue monitor is better as you can do it first thing, so I might try that next month. I don't get how you're supposed to produce a decent urine sample if you haven't drunk in two hours.

Just caught up on this as I haven't been on for a while! I just wanted to wish you luck and hope it happens quickly for you both. I don't really understand how ovulation kits work but can you it just do it when you wake up - thinking of the 'don't drink for 2 hours before' thing?

We're about to start trying too I think. Think that's the first time I've actually said that!

Well, I thought I would have started a period by now. Since coming off the pill I have had a 32 day cycle and a 30 day one. I'm on day 34 of this one. I didn't keep proper track of them before going on the pill, but I don't think I had more than 32 days. They weren't so regular before I lost weight. I'm aware that stressful things like moving house can throw your cycle out (we moved last week). I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much, I'll be pretty stunned if I conceive after only two months, knowing how long some people try for, but at the same time I'll be over the moon. I'm going to give it a couple more days before I test. I have had the normal premenstrual thing of acne and tender breasts, but the tenderness is more than usual, and I'm getting some stomach cramps, which I only normally get when my period starts. They're actually not as bad as usual.

He doesn't know yet. He knew my period was late and that there was a possibility, and that as time went on it was more and more likely. I tried to do the test first thing while he was still home, but didn't get enough of a sample. I wasn't able to try again until he went out. I'll tell home when he gets home from work.

April the best thing is not to wait for ovulation, but to have intercourse every two or three days throughout the month, particularly of you're not sure if your cycle. Every two days is ideal as there are two peak fertility days in each cycle and if you do alternate days you'll hit one of them. It's nigh on impossible to know exactly when you are ovulating, so it's best not to focus on just a few days. Bear in mind as well that sperm can live for up to a week.
