One of our close friends (and witness) is our DJ for our Wedding, he is doing this for us for nothing (we are providing him and his wife a room for the night in return) so to give him as less work as possible, we have tried to put our music list together. The general idea is to have no typical wedding cheese (that really isn't us!) and as we have a varied music taste between us both, we are planning to have different sections. The plan is to have low key(ish) for the first half hour or so whilst people arrive then some pop stuff, first dance more pop/chart stuff, then some old school/classics from 90s early 00s, and Indie/Rock sections and finishing with some more chart stuff.

Below is the list we have put together, what do you think? Is there anything that has been included that you think is a big No or wouldn't want to make you dance or is perhaps played too late or too early?

    Thanks.

I think this is great! I am doing the same sort of thing, starting with songs from the years of our birth then onto some poppy music before going onto indie then dance as the night gets later. Really love your list of music but dont forget some good songs could come out before u get married so what i have done is make an A list and a B list incase a proper good tune comes out and things need replacing. My list is already made up of way more songs than what we need though :/ xx

We have very similar taste is music!! X

I wouldn't be to hard and fast about the order in which they are played .. Let your DJ read your guests and put music on accordingly

Thank you ladies for your feedback. And of course Nicola, this is I think the 2nd or 3rd draft due to new songs coming out but its good for is to have a starting point. I was thinking about that Lala but want to give our friend as less work as possible after all, he is doing us a massive favour and don't want us to take the pee as such.

Apologies for putting the wrong category.

I would just let him know what kind if music you want and let him sort it
You might think making him a list will make his life easier but it won't lol
My uncle was a DJ before he died and there was nothing worse than someone bringing him a list.
Just give him a list of the songs you really want played and let him sort it out lol x

And also sorry to be adding lol
But the majority of songs are all very new, are you having any older guests?
They might like some oldies played x

Are you not having any people over the age of thirty at your reception??
If you want to cater for just you, hubby and friends of the same age then it's a great list!!!
However, if you have older people there you haven't catered for them.

I gave our DJ a list of bands we wanted playing and he ignored us.
I'm glad he did as he had people up dancing from the first song right through til the end!!

Yes, it's your wedding but don't you want everyone to have a good time??

    Love your songs x

Have you cleared the DJ with your venue? Some venues charge a fee for using an outside DJ & others require that they have insurance. It's worth a check if you haven't already.

I have to agree with a couple of the other posters. As an over 30 (ahem 40+), I barely recognised anything and if I'm honest there was perhaps only 6 songs (from the indie section) that I would dance to. Perhaps thats reasonable, as at least that is 6 songs that I like but I should imagine that those even older than me would recognise even less.

Yes have cleared DJ with venue, the venue doesn't have their own DJ so for every wedding they have people get their own people in. As long they see all the relevant paperwork the DJ has to have they are happy and our friend has this. He DJs a lot of Weddings and has just started to DJ in London so he knows more about the paperwork etc then we do!

In terms of older people, yes we have older people coming however, both sides of our family despite being 40+ still love a good dance to current music, when I have been out with people from work (some are in their 60's) like xmas do's etc they all love a dance to current music and when at a 40th party when there was no current music, they hated it lol! H2b's mum at a wedding we were recently at was requesting things like Blurred Lines herself.

So I understand your point but on experience I very much doubt it will be an issue. However, suggestions would be appreciated but please no typical wedding cheese, its such a pet hate of me and H2b lol.

    Hi Mrs T. 2 Be!

I thought i'd pop on here and give you my thoughts from a DJ's perspective.

Firstly, the order of the list is a bit random. Generally, we put music in to sets, say 20mins of 60's followed by 20mins of 70's etc - Obviously we read the dance floor and if it's starting to thin out, we'll move on to another era or genre.

My advice would be to give your DJ a list of songs you would like to be played during the night, but be aware that the average song is approx 3:30, which works out to be about 19/20 song per hour... therefore if you supply him with 200 songs, don't be too miffed if they're not all played! ;-)

I have had past clients provide me with a 'Playlist' rather than a 'Request list' and the nights were never as good - mainly due to the fact that the B&G had told me to stick rigidly to the list, despite me asking a number of times to deviate as no-one was dancing and from a DJ's point-of-view, it's well naff lol!

Let your DJ take care of the music on the night, after all, that is their job - just send him some requests so he can get a feel of what you like. If you insist on a 'Playlist' you may as well put all the songs on an iPod, as your DJ will just be acting as a jukebox anyway...

I hope this helps and I don't mean to be rude...

    Regards,

    Scott.

Thank you Scott, we just don't want to be taking the P as our Dj is a close friend and has offered to do it for free so don't want him to feel like he has to spend hours on sorting the music for us.

The only thing he has said he wants us to do is a playlist for our indie/rock section as that isn't his forte and knows that me and H2b do lol.

The list we are going to give to him and just say whatever order you think is best but we do want an indie/rock section and some old school dancey 90's/00's tunes in a section. To be fair he knows most of our music taste so will just use the list as a bit of a guide and if not everything gets played then so be it. It's not a strict this order and this must be played kinda list lol!

However, there will be zero cheese! Our families aren't even cheese music lovers lol!
