Has anyone here made their own cake? I bake a lot and often make cakes for family and friends so am thinking why should I pay for someone else to do something I can do at a fraction of the cost.

If you did do your own, when did you finish decorating, take to the venue etc? Is it too much stress to add to an already stressful situation?

I am not making my own because I am an utter stress- head and will freak out about it if it goes wrong - however I have been to a wedding where the bride made her own. It was only a small wedding - around 30 day guests and a few more for the evening but she did a lovely 2 tier cake herself and made it the day before!!

I think it's very brave but totally depends on how stressed out you think you will be. :)

I wouldn't make me own as I'm a perfectionist and would get stressed out but if you think you can do it like bambi bride says then why not. X x

I contemplated making my own fruit cakes and icing but it worked out expensive with the ingredients, then thought about buying 3 diff size iced cakes from T3sco which worked out around £40. We would them decorate them ourselves. A friend ended up making our cake for us - a maderia cake with butter cream icing piped on as roses with glitter in the icing - this would was £100 people and cost £100. She stacked the layers etc on a board and put it in a large cardboard box and delivered it to the hotel on the morning of the wedding from Bolton to Huddersfield.

My step dad is making ours! He is not a massive baker but he's quite confident he'll be able to do it! It'll be 3 different size chocolate cakes with chocolate butter cream. We are hiring the cake stand/boards/tins from a local cake shop and buying decs from hobby craft and internet I think. Its a risk but I'm not massively fussy what it looks like! xx

I am making my own and taking it up to the venue the night before and putting it together. I'm also doing my own centrepieces and favours so will take them all up the night before the wedding. It will be a bit stressful but I'd rather stress about that than not be able to afford everything. :) x

I am making my own cake and cupcakes after I got quotes over £500 for the 2 layer topsy turvy cake I wanted, way too high on our budget

I love making cakes but have never made a topsy turvy cake before and rarely use royal icing so I am doing some practice runs, so far done two and have plans for another 2 before the big day. The recipe I got is for a gorgeous chocolate cake that tastes a bit like chocolate truffles and lasts a few weeks un-iced, so I am making the cake 2-3 days before the wedding then then the day before making the cupcakes and then putting together and icing the cake.

The cupcakes are chocolate with either pale blue mint frosting or chocolate fudge frosting (I have made tons of these before for work parties etc)

You can see my cake (not one I made) and cupcakes in my photo album

Despite the fact I have laid down good plans it still is really scaring me because well it could all go wrong and well I am glad I booked the week before the wedding off as I think I will be a wee bit stressed and no one will be allowed in the kitchen : )

Ooh love the cake. Always wanted to make a topsy turvy cake but never had a reason to. Might force one on my mum for her birthday!

I'm going traditional for mine, 2 tiers fruit with 1 sponge. Gonna use cake dummys to practice on though otherwise I will just keep eating the practice cakes!,

I will post the pics as I do them and then people can help me pick a design. You should show us how you get on too :)
