we were really keen on a wedding cake that is in the theme / shape of a carousel. weve got one estimate so far of over £400 (not sure how much over that she was meaning?)
have many people actually had much luck making their own cakes? my h2b thinks its a silly idea, and it will be too much to do to near the day, and we`d be stuck if it all went horribly wrong. we`re vegan, so thats an added complication. ive found an online vegan cake company that can supply you with plain cakes to decorate, i enjoy doing things like that and i think it would make it a bit more personal. i think it may be the only way we get the cake we want without spending an absolute fortune, but realistically is it worth the stress?

do what momari said and take into account how much time you will have in the run-up to the wedding etc and for any hiccuos that can occur . think about everything i was going to do mine but decided against it as i didn't want the hassle in the run up and enjoy the time as much as possible!
    xx

you might as well have some practice runs and if near the time it goes wrong then you can go to the supermarket and get some. Have you thought about a dummy cake? where its a fake sponge and you just decorate it. That way you can have the nicely decorated cake but for a fraction of the cost and have a plain version of the cake in the kitchen to cut up and maybe on the iced cake have a real cake at the bottom for cutting the cake pictures.

I'm a caker and I was going to do my own cake for the wedding, but I've been convinced by h2b to let his mum do it to take the stress out of it for me. It'd depend on if youve ever made/decorated a cake before I spose. If yes and you're confident about it then go ahead and do it - saves money. If not then don't. A lot of people think it'll be easy to re-create a cake they've seen somewhere, then learn the hard way

I can't have dairy, but eggs are ok. How are you at making your own cakes?? Does the egg alternative work?? As mentioned above I am doing practice runs with christmas. Good luck to you. Hope it all works out for you.xx

I'm cheating and decorating a fake cake made of polystyrene teirs and then we are serving my h2b's birthday cake and sheet cakes. It cost me next to nothing for everything. I do make cakes myself and decorate them but too be honest I don't want the hassle of messing on near to the day so its the best way to do it.

I'd love to make my own cake hun but I think the amount of time and stress it would take i'd rather just pay someone to do it - I'm gonna have enough to think about without having to worry about making a cake x

I'm making my own cake as we're having cupcakes and hoping to use it as a fun thing to do with my BMs just before the wedding as otherwise we'd only have the venue to decorate and then we'd just have to sit around and drink cocktails all day lol.

I think if you like baking and you can be quite creative when you want to be haha, then go for it. Can definitely understand why some people would prefer someone else doing it - baking is relaxing for some people, stressful for others - but I don't fancy paying someone else to do something I can happily do myself :P
