So we're supposed to be going to Thailand for our honeymoon in September but the news of the military coup and nationwide curfew is not good news

Will just keep monitoring the advice being given as travel isn't being advised against yet

    Keep everything crossed for us

    Hey Sonya,

I actually live in Thailand - have been living in Bangkok for 6months and been travelling around the country a fair bit as well...so I am not an expert but I am pretty close haha ;) seriously though...for anyone worried at the moment it is just business as usual in Thailand as it has been pretty much for most people during the political unrest occurring since November. In Bangkok all the tourist attractions are still open as they are throughout the country. There is a curfew at the moment from 10pm-5am which was enforced last night but tourists could still get too and from the airport...the general consensus is that this will end in the next week or so or will at least be less strictly enforced outside of Bangkok (but obviously a lot of that is speculation)...September is a LONG way off in Thai terms...anything could happen between now and then! Thai politics is like Hollyoaks!

My advice is not to worry just yet - even when the protests were at their peak there was always a way around it with most people just getting on with their lives...if you or anyone else has any worries then i'm more than happy to help on this thread or via PM - the media usually ham things up a lot, especially if its a slow news week...we had the same situation when in Cairo - scariest news broadcasts I have ever seen but zero actually happening in real life so they kept playing the same footage over and over and making out like it was real time!

I am here for at least 5/6 more months :) xx

There's been no advisories from our own government, also usually if you are going to a tourist region (and not off the beaten track), these areas are often well protected so not to harm the country's tourist economy. I know when it all kicked off in Egypt, the tourist areas were not no-go zones

Some good advice on here already, try not to worry Sonya, just ensure you have travel insurance to cover any eventualities just in case.

Thanks Kel, kitty, lala, Clair and IDL! I'm not too worried and even if we do have to be in by 10pm it's not hardship as we have a gorgeous private pool villa to return to!!

Hi, just a quick update really...the curfew is now only from midnight until 4am and in some places it isn't really being enforced...people going to and from the airport are not under curfew and they are also talking about scrapping it completely in some tourist areas such as Phuket etc. There is still a lot of tension at the moment but this is in localised areas (so tourist attractions are still all good) and there are problems with some tv and internet being blocked etc but that shouldn't really affect honeymooners/holiday makers... :) xx

I wish Thomp-on had known what you're saying about Cairo. Our cruise was supposed to go there and to Alexandria, but they've taken those stops out and replaced them with one in Rhodes and an extra day in Israel. I'm glad of the extra time in Israel and Rhodes will be lovely, but I would have like to have seen the pyramids, and to be able to say that I'd been to Africa.

another update...curfew has now been lifted in Phuket, Pattaya and Koh Samui...i expect this will spread to more of the main 'tourist' areas soon...otherwise it is pretty quiet some small protests around Bangkok but nothing disrupting tourist attractions etc...oh but the Hunger Games salute is now banned...so don't do that! haha only in Thailand! xx

Haha because all the protesters are doing it as a sign of their unhappiness with the coup/lack of democracy a bit like in the film so they all started doing it so the military decided to ban it! well any useful info i get il post it on here :) xx

I have been in Bangkok for the last 6 months with no drama so as long as you don't head to the protest areas (which there are none of anyway anymore due to the military crack down) there is no need to avoid...in fact its the best time to be here really as everything is quieter :)

I've a question for you kitty. At the moment the THB exchange rate here has gone up to around 51 to 1 GBP which is better than the 44ish we got last time (not as good as 9 years ago when I got around 63!). We're thinking of buying currency now whilst there's still some unrest causing the rise. But remember in the past USD travellers cheques getting good rates. You wouldn't be able to find out what the USD/THB rate is over there at the mo could you??

Yeah I will have a look when I am next near a bank...the THB has fluctuated between 49-53 or 54 since we have been here...in previous military coups the currency has crashed completely but that hasn't happened this time and we are hoping it doesn't as we have quite a bit of it for day to day spending etc! Although we have most of our cash in £ and $ as the rate of exchange here is better than at home and we try and change when it fluctuates in our favour! but will defo have a look for you over the next day or so :)

The only prob with travellers cheques is a lot of companies don't do them anymore... We don't at Thomson we do the money card instead, our rate has been really high

How does that work Kel? Like a credit card? Wouldn't work in Ko Samui cos we like to eat in the tiny non touristy places as you get the best food but they're just cash. Was hoping to take GBP travellers cheques and exchange over there as the rate seems better out there than here.
