We can't afford much for our honeymoon and it would be great to win a competition to win one but because I'm a teacher I know I never will. All the competitions state that the holiday cannot be taken in school holidays and that is the only time off I can have. I know they do it cos that's the most expensive time but it doesn't feel fair that teachers and others who work in education will never be able to take them. Boo! :(

Mini moon sounds good but will still cost the earth as we're getting married in the summer holidays. may phone in sick for a week in term and come back with a suspicious looking tan!

Lala that's the response i normally get from ppl. But I'd give up any of my weeks holiday for a fortnight away when the kids weren't off! I also love how people moan that we have too many holidays and our job is easy "finishing at 3 o clock" (as if!) yet when asked if they would do our job the response is always a very quick "Hell no!"

Same for me! I wasn't allowed 2 days off the other year. My h2b had booked a surprise birthday trip to Las Vegas to see Celine Dion and shows. He wrote to the chair of governors and my head - even offered to pay supply for my cover. They turned him down :0( Gutted wasn't the word when I found out!! Apparently it is not deemed professional!
Moral of that story was to have told me first and to have phoned in sick!

Suzie that's what I have found. I never take sick days, I was back in work 10 days after having surgery, so in the future I'm just gonna ring in sick. When I needed to take H2B to the airport to go to Arizona for 6 months they made it really awkward and said it wasn't professional and that I could never ask again etc etc. I tried to do the right thing and give them notice to get supply but next time I need time off (say for a dress fitting) I'm ringing in sick

word of warning regarding calling in sick and then going on holiday .........one of our teachers did that and was sacked ,

also be very careful if you are planning to go for dress fittings etc ,as they will question your sickness if you were well enough to go for a fitting , you never know who might see you or be quick to drop you in it

mrs mac ......you cant take a week off for holiday during term time ........last year we had to cancell our holiday in the summer as Mr lala had to go to Afganistan ...we booked another for october half term but the dates meant that i would be back 2 days into the new term ...when i asked if i could have those days off (one being a teacher training day) i was told that i could have them due to expectional circumstances .....but the days would be unpaid !!

I work in education but h2b works for the NHS. It's always expensive to go on holiday because the school holidays are the only time we can go - but h2b has problems actually getting school holidays for us to go away as a family, as a lot of his co-workers (who could take holiday anytime) book school holidays off to 'look after the grandchildren'. He's mentioned that the only time he can have a family holiday is during the school holidays - but his bosses never take this into account. I don't think they realise that if we had a choice we'd definitely take holidays in term time when it's cheaper.

We are shattered by the end of term and are often ill!!! For what we get paid and the hours we put in - Monday-Friday I have to mark and plan for 4 of those nights and have to plan during one night of the weekend. Also for professional development, work have sent me on a 2 year course with evening lectures and essays - all of which eat into the unpaid time!! :0( rant rant rant!!!!!!

It wouldn't be too bad if we were on the same salary as teachers, but you're right lalabunni - us lowly TA's are on a pittance (especially for what we do).

We cant have a decent holiday because we cannot take our kids out of school in term time for such.

They would not even let my daughter have ONE DAY off last year to play in a brass band contest - which, IMHO IS educational.
We were threatened with a bloody fine!

We have 4 kids between us, and the dictatorship that is now the education system is pants - my youngest daughter does not go back to school until the 10th January, when everyone else goes back on the 4th - now that does not fit in with us whatosever due to us having to be back in work on 4th - maybe i should demand that they take her back and tell the school what they can and cant do - pretty much as they dictate to us what we can and cant do!
