So I have a little predicament, or rather, it's starting to become one.

I booked a makeup artist some time ago, April/May time for my wedding next September. I met her at a wedding fair, really liked her, and her prices were the same as basically everyone else if not a little less so I put down a £50 deposit. No problems.

I then gained another bridesmaid in late May, and sent her a message to confirm this was okay and ask if she needed anything further for a deposit. She said it wasn't a problem and she didn't need anything else. No problems.

I have booked my hair trial (different supplier) for 17th March next year and so wanted to see if I could get my makeup done on the same day. I messaged her to ask on 26th June but have had no reply. I didn't want to bother her because I figured she'd be busy as it's wedding season, and it was 9 months away so it wasn't exactly urgent. I sent her another message a week ago just to forward the last message and say I hadn't heard from her so could she let me know? And I've still had nothing.

There's no updates or posts on her Facebook page since 20th June. How long is too long to wait for a response? I know I have a year before my wedding but I'm thinking if she's not replying to me now, what's it going to be like nearer to the time? Is this acceptable??

I've checked her website and the contact details there are the same as the ones I have. How long should I give before I start getting worried?

As you say she may be busy with the wedding season but that does not stop someone checking emails etc, it might be a case of she's not got internet access at present, maybe leave it a month or so, then contact her and tell her you would like a response by the end of November, if not you will want your deposit back and will be going elsewhere. Does she not have an address or business property you can attend.

She definitely has internet, sadly, as I just checked her personal Facebook page and she posted about 15 hours ago... so no reason really why she should be ignoring me and I can't imagine my messages would suddenly start going into "Junk" after we'd back and forthed about 14 times before?

Will do what you suggest, but seeing that she's posted on her own Facebook page does have me a little peeved now.

Yes I can imagine it has, can you not get hold of her on that account or have you tried that as well?

I've just tried the personal one now. If she doesn't reply again and I see she's updating her status again, I'm asking for the deposit back!

Yeah that doesn't sound good! I would say if she is updating her personal fab page yet not replying to you, doesn't really show much commitment. I get that it is a long way off but it is common courtesy to acknowledge an email- best of luck x

If she's actively using Bookface, could you not message her on there and see if she replies. I know I'd be really frustrated if I were you. Hope you get it sorted :-)

Is there a phone number that you can try? I ended up abandoning my cake decorator for a similar reason, she was simply not responding to either her personal or professional account on the book despite being active on the personal one. She was having health problems, but she or someone acting on her behalf could have contacted me to say what was happening. I hadn't paid a deposit though so I didn't lose any money.

I have messaged her on Facebook and so has my partner. She's not responded to either one of us, but she has just announced that she's pregnant and looks like it's due around March, so I definitely won't be getting a trial around then! Lol.

I've never had children, so questions for the ladies that do, what do you think the chances are that she'll be back working (as a self-employed person) within 6 months of childbirth? I think it would be slim, but not having had a baby, I have literally no idea. xx

And it looks like her website is in the process of being updated... bit of a cheek, but the number on there is a dummy number with another country code on it.

I'm going to see if I can find her business card from February and text her if I find it. But the fact is, I booked her via email, she confirmed payment via email, and I updated and added another bridesmaid via email so the sudden stop of communication via email is bizarre. xx

If she is self employed, she may go back quicker, I'd tell her that you want your deposit back and threaten her with trading standards and small claims court if she does not return it. Then go find someone more reliable.

i had the exact same problem to the point where i thought i might have to book someone else but it was just because she is so busy with weddings etc etc i honestly wouldn't worry hun, if she doesn't tell you that its cancelled then as it stands its not especially if she took the deposit

I'd agree with Glitterfairy, if she's self-employed she might not be able to afford to take off the normal length of maternity leave. It would depend on her circumstances, like whether or not the household has another income.

I'd be happy that that were the case for a couple of weeks, even a few weeks, Irishbride2be, but I just think 3 months is a really long time to ignore someone whose contacting you on several different platforms...

I've put two dates in my diary. If she doesn't reply by 23rd September (3 weeks from her receiving an email and 2 FB messages to 2 separate accounts) I'm going to ask her to return my deposit within 28 days. If I don't get a response from that, or my deposit returned, I'm going to start posting publicly on her business page because that will be heading for 4 1/2 months.

Because the other thing is, I want my trial before June, but she's probably not going to be in a position to do that either. I have two back-up makeup artists anyway and they all cost the same so guess we'll just see what happens!!

In other news, I think my dress arrived in the shop today! Whoop!! :) xx

That seems fair enough. It doesn't take long to send a quick response saying that she will be in contact nearer the time to book your trial in.

can i ask WHY you are going to wait three weeks ?

i would send her a message , post on her wall , dive bomb her with carrier pigeons ... stating that you are now giving her 7 days in which to respond to you failure to do so will result you be taking your case to trading standards as she has failed to communicate with you

Because I'm a soft touch? Lol. I also work in a job where everyone wants everything right now and it's just not possible, so I like to try and give a bit of time.

I actually was sat Facebook stalking her earlier and thought "Why am I doing this?" so I sent her another message sort of nonchalantly asking whether she'd changed her business email and had been busy because of the delay. She replied almost immediately apologising and her website is being updated (which it is, as i said) and they've changed the filters on her email as a result due to spam? So my emails seem to have been caught in the filters. I obviously can't have my trial when I would like, but it appears things should be okay!

Lala, the carrier pigeons actually made me laugh out loud. xx

That's brilliant she replied, sometimes with fb I find that ppl message me and if I'm online doing something it flashes up then goes n doesn't show a number in my inbox so I forgot its flashed n doesn't look like I got a mew message even though I have if that makes sense, so fx that what happened to her :) but very happy she's got back to you and u know where u stand n her being self employed means she'll most likely come back to work sooner because of maternity pay being zero or very low x
