Anybody heard of any good superstitions or odd ones about weddings? Read some really good ones today.

When the bride is ready to leave the house for the wedding ceremony a last look in the mirror will bring her good luck. However returning to the mirror once she has began her journey will result in bad luck.

It is said that the first partner who buys a new item after the wedding will be the dominant one in the relationship.

In Ireland a laying hen was tied to the bed on the first honeymoon night in the hope that some of its fertility would be passed on to the couple.

Not so sure about the last one!

    Like this one too...

Married in White, you have chosen right,
Married in Blue, your love will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,
Married in Brown, you will live in town,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Pink, your spirit will sink,
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back.

Married when the year is new, he'll be loving, kind and true.
When February birds do mate, You wed nor dread your fate.
If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know.
Marry in April when you can, Joy for Maiden and for Man.
Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day.
Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you'll go.
Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bred.
Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see
Marry in September's shrine, your living will be rich and fine.
If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry.
If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember.
When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last.

Not sure about the chicken one either. I have 3, and I don't want them anywhere near me on my wedding night!

As for the 'making the first purchase' thing - I heard that the MOH carries something small and cheap, like a pin, which the bride buys for a penny straight after the ceremony. Thereby ensuring she makes the first purchase, and is the dominant one!

Less well known is for the bride's father to give the groom a pair of the bride's shoes to symbolise the passing of responsibility for the daughter to her new husband. Mmmmm, might lead to a bit of cross dressing if you ask me....

OK... weird alert. This must be an American superstition. The week before the wedding, have a house-cat eat out of your left shoe for good luck.

Would make a change, normally my cats leave mice in mine.

OK, someone is having a laugh now....... For good luck and a lifetime of pleasant relations with the bride's parents, it is tradition for the groom to honor his future mother-in-law with a diamond when he presents the engagement ring to his future bride.
    I DONT THINK SO!

And this one is just plain STOOPID! It is bad luck for the bride to try on her wedding gown before the wedding day. If she does, most likely that the wedding ceremony will not go through.

    These are all real, apparently.

    Apparently -
'This rhyme originated in Victorian times. 'Something Old' signifies that the Couple's friends will stay with them. In one version of the tradition the 'Something Old' was an old garter which was given to the bride by a happily married woman so that the new bride would also enjoy a happy marriage. 'Something New' looks to the future for health, happiness and success.

'Something Borrowed' is an opportunity for the Bride's family to give her something as a token of their love (it must be returned to ensure Good Luck), and 'Something Blue' is thought lucky because Blue represents fidelity and constancy. The custom began in ancient Israel where brides wore a blue ribbon in their hair to symbolise their fidelity. '

Thinking about the garter - tradition says that the groom should remove his new wife's garter and, having gathered all his single male friends around him, he should then throw that over his shoulder. Whoever catches it is the next man to be married. So, a bit like throwing the bouquet but for the blokes!

And as for wedding flowers - the meanings of some favourite wedding flowers are:

    Gardenias - secret love
    Heather (lavender) - admiration
Heather (white) - protection, wishes come true
    Ivy - wedded love
Tiger Lilies - weath & pride
Lily of the Valley - increased happiness, sweetness
    Orchid - love, beauty
    Peony - happy life
Dark pink roses - thank you
    Peach roses - enthusiasm, desire
Red roses - I love you
    White roses - innocence
    Wild roses - simplicity
    Yellow roses - joy, friendship
    Sunflowers - adoration
Red Tulips - believe in me

Dont go with lotus flowers (rejected love), marigolds (cruelty, jealousy) petunias (resentment, anger)
and dark red roses are dodgy (mourning) or cyclamen (goodbye) !!!!! Still, its only silly nonsense at the end of the day!

Carrying a horseshoe or a bouquet in the shape of one is considered lucky for the bride, but only if the horseshoe is carried with the open end up so the luck does not ‘fall out'. Legend has it the 10th Century Archbishop of Canterbury, Dunstan, a former blacksmith managed to outwit the devil. The devil was thought to have asked Dunstan to shoe his hoof. Dunstan realised his customer was the devil and nailed the shoe on as painfully as he could. The devil begged for mercy. Dunstan agreed to remove the shoe on condition that the devil agreed never to enter a place where a horseshoe was hung over the door.

I've heard it is unlucky to try the COMPLETE outfit on before the day- not the dress.

Also, it used to be they would leave a button or a bit of beading or lace off the gown to the morning, so the dress wasn't complete to then.

It is bad luck for the bride to put bare feet on the floor on her wedding night. Keep slippers on or have the groom carry you to bed.

If a cat sneezes in front of a bride on the day before her wedding, it is a sign of very good luck.

Well if meeting a black cat on the way to the church is good luck then I'm alright. My cat Lyla-Peg is black. She walks over my path every day. In fact she sleeps across my feet! lol.

    How about:

Change the name but not the letter - Marry for worse and not for better.

And I would never have red and white as a theme purely because of the old saying of marry in Red and wish yourself dead. And the Blood and Bone one too. x

I picked up a freebie book in a wedding magazine yesterday which had a part on superstitions in it. Me and H2B had a good giggle over them....

We all know the its bad luck for the groom to see the bride on the day of the wedding before they get to the church, but its good luck if they smile at each when they see each other in the church...how many of us are going to glare at the H2B? lol

I need to borrow a cat on the day of the wedding too haha, its meant to hold off rain if you feed your cat on the morning of the wedding (how many people are going to let a pet go hungry?)

Oh and its a good sign if you see a spider in your dress on the day of your wedding. What about those of us that hate spiders? lol

My mum had a little knitted chimney sweep when she got married for the 2nd time, was a marriage doomed from the start, they had an argument on the wedding night and her hubby left her at the hotel and came home, and it carried on like that for the rest of their married life (he died a few years later)
