    Hi everyone!!

I've been smoking for about 8 years now, since I was 15 (god I can't believe it's so long!!). My OH absolutely hates it, and I don't blame him! He's never smoked.
He's always trying to get me to stop, and I have tried for him but it hasn't worked. I know it's because I'm not ready to quit myself, I can just do it because he wants me to - I have to want to for myself.

I've started reading ****@1@n C@rr5 5t0p 5m0k1ng book, and I knew it was going to work - I knew I'd be able to stop if I kept reading - so I stopped reading *roll eyes*

I would love to be able to quit for the wedding, he'd be absolutely delighted! There is no better thing I could do for him as an 'early' wedding gift, And I'm *starting* to want to do it myself too.

Aside from the book I mentioned, has anybody here got any tips for quitting?
My sister was on Ch@mp!x tablets and they worked for her but she had some serious issues with her mental health because of them (short term thankfully). Are they available on NHS here? Has anyone tried them?

I've heard the @l@n C@rr books are good.... If you really want to stop for your OH can you not continue with them??

I've only ever tried patches and I stopped for 2 weeks but started again.... I'm not ready to quit but my OH tells me I'll do it when I'm ready too xx

    Good luck

I swapped cigarettes for an e-cig and I have never wanted to go back. I know it's not quite the same and quitting completely but it has the advantage of smelling better and being cheaper.

    Good luck with the endeavour

My dad who was a smoker for 30+ years quit completely after a single hypnotherapy session. This was about 12ish years ago. It cost about £200 for the session but it was amazing, he just came out saying 'I'm a non-smoker' and has never touched one or mentioned smoking since. He did drive a bit fast for a few months lol but that was it. Wouldn't have believed it before but it totally worked for him x

If the book was starting to work then try that again. I don't smoke but I always remember my aunt saying it was the motion of smoking and having something in her hand than the actual cigerettes so she got a little fake one to hold whenever she got a craving. X

I used ****ch@mp1x about 5 years ago. I got it on the NHS and I'm sure it was a three month course, maybe four I can't remember. I had no cravings after the first week or so and other than a random two weeks last year when I decided to smoke for some reason, I haven't missed it at all. I think if you want to do it it's a lot easier than if you're being pressured into it. The only side effect of it I had were some very freaky dreams. Not nightmares or anything, just really peculiar.

I do think Julie is right.... You need to want to stop rather than someone telling you too.

I was very clear on the night I met OH that I was a smoker and had no intention of stopping. He's fine with that. He'd like me too stop but would never ask me to.

I was the same Emmilou. And, give him his due, OH never tried to make me. I quit because I started running and it was affecting that. Once I decided to do it for myself it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but if I hadn't been doing it for me I doubt it would have worked.

I had a friend who used the patches and they worked for her, but I know they don't work for everyone. She had the added motivation that her daughter had started smoking and she couldn't expect her daughter to quit if she didn't. The other thing I've heard is to make sure your hands are busy whenever you would normally smoke, as part of it is not knowing what else to do. Could you take up some kind of art or craft? Knitting seems to be popular. A lot of people seem to rate the e-cigarettes. Another way to help you find the motivation would be to work out how much you spend on cigarettes and lighters, and put that money aside every time you don't buy cigarettes or lighters, then you can use it to treat yourself to something else. The only other thing I can think of is if you can find someone else who is thinking about stopping. Then you can do it together and support each other. Good luck with it, I've never smoked but I'm full of admiration for those who manage to quit.

Me and the OH have been on e-cigs and have been smoke free for at least 2 years. You can get the liquids with different strengths and go down to 0 nicotine. I plan to get off mine very soon as i dont think i need it anymore. Bit of advice dont go for the 'cheap' pen types as i had these and in my opinion they were rubbish as i went back to cigarettes. I spent around £70 for a decent one and there was a huge difference.
I will never smoke again the smell makes me gag. Worked for us but you need to want to quit yourself.
    Xx

Really wish my OH would give up smoking. He smokes roll ups and has done since he was about 16.
I love him to bits, but get annoyed when we are out somewhere together and I end up sitting on my own while he is outside smoking AGAIN !! He is quite a heavy smoker.

One time last year, he was gone so long outside smoking, that I actually went back to our hotel room, I was so upset. Our friends told him where I had gone, and he came to find me, but he was still gone more than 30 minutes.

Have tried talking to him and tell him how much it upsets me when he leaves me on my own, and he always apologises and says he wont o it again - but it always happens.

I love him just the way he is and don't want him to change. He has said he will try to give up for me. I want him to give up for himself - not for me.

Maybe I should offer to buy him an e-cig. Any suggestions?

Looking forward to becoming the 3rd and last Mrs McLauchlan

Super4ac you can certainly get Ch**pix on the NHS. Speak to your GP surgery and see if they have a nurse that specialises in smoking cessation. You might also find there's a local Stop Smoking Service you can use for support. They will discuss your preferred method of quitting aid, be it tablets or patches, and write a request for a prescription from your surgery.

When I gave up smoking 11 years ago, it was because my sister had given birth very early due to smoking and my niece was very illand thought that if I were to have kids, this would be the time to give up. What I found was I would eat when I was bored and I went from a size 6 to a size 18 in the space of a year. My oh has started using the e-cigs and hasn't looked back. He started this at the beginning of the year. If e-cigs were around when I gave up, I would definitely consider it!

Treating yourself really helps as well. I used to put the money I spent each week away then at the end of the month I would have enough for my yoga subscription for the next month and something new to run in. Doesn't sound like much of a treat I know but it made me happy

Love the idea of treating yourself. I have never smoked but when my sister quit she had an app on her phone that told her how much money she had saved by not smoking. Even she was shocked.

    Best of luck Emm x

Thanks for all the tips and stories guys! I might pick up the book again before I try the tablets as I have read about the nasty side effects! I'll let you all know how it goes in a few weeks :) xx

My dad tried those tablets, they didn't work so well for him in the way that he got terrible anger issues, and horrible nightmares. They can even lead to suicidal thoughts. They say if you have a temper or an angry/violent personality not to use them as they can make it worse. I think it might be best to speak to you doctor in length before settling on them x
