Hey everyone I am getting married in 2015, but I was wondering if you have to have a engagement party. Everyone I have spoken to says that me and my H2B should have one because it will be a celebration of us to getting engaged. But I am not a 100% sure I would like one, as I rather celebrate on our own.

What do people think? Shall we have one or let it be.

I think it is entirely up to you! We had one and it was great and meant that all of our family and friends got to meet before the wedding day, but my friend went out for a meal with just close family and friends (about 15 of us in total) and that was lovely too! Do whatever you want to do, don't let people pressure you into having something you don't want xxx

We had a big house party but it wasn't until 6 months after we got engaged and it was combined with our moving out/farewell party cos we have gone travelling...a few of my other engaged friends have had a party and a few haven't I think its really up to you if you aren't bothered then don't have one don't think we would have bothered if it wasn't for the other factors. We also had a very small gathering with our parents and siblings as not everyone had met which was nice. no point in wasting money on a party you don't want. xx

It's really up to you, personally my OH and I aren't having one because our families are spread between Portsmouth to Aberdeen and we cannot afford to spare the money which would be best used towards our wedding.

We went for a meal... Total disaster but that's another story...

I think it's a waste of money and that money could be better spent towards the wedding... x

It's up to you and your OH . Personally me and OH didn't because we rather put money towards wedding . My MOH recently got engaged and was like me by not being bothered but her family wanted to do something so she had a BBQ and then we toasted them so some champers and also cake :) It was fun and informal which she wanted but it's all down to personal choice :)

We got engaged in November and booked our wedding in feb. We didn't have a party because we ended up booking so quickly so the wedding is our focus money wise. I would like to have had one but I think in a way it's just another thing to waste money on, so I don't mind that much. You don't have to have one. I think it more depends on your personality x

We had one we got engaged in 18/10/13 and had the party 1/2/14 I'm not a big party person and oh hates being centre of attention.

Why did we have a party because I wanted to celebrate after 8 years being together he finally asked me to marry him we have a lot of heartache over the past 5 years and the fact we have come through it stronger and now engaged I wanted to celebrate with my family and friends. I booked the engagement party and paid deposit 2 weeks later we booked the wedding if I had thought we were going to book so soon I would have not bothered with the engagement party as we could have out that money towards the wedding.

We all had a great night though.

We had a little family meal instead of a party. We didnt want a big do, so used the meal as a way for both families to finally meet eachother. It was quite nice actually. Its totally up to you 2 though

Thanks everyone for replying, I do like the sound of having a meal with close family and friends, as I don't like to be in the centre of attention, especially as we are saving for the wedding, it could be a good idea, to cut costs if we went ahead with it.

We didn't have one, but it's entirely up to you. People do have them. My mother & father in law received an Engagement Party invitation a few months ago, and it had a gift list in it requesting money (not physical gifts)!!!!!! It wasn't even a wedding invite. Cheeky devils. They declined the invite lol

We just went out for a meal ourselves as we didn't have time to have an engagement party. It just depends on the couple and what suits them.

It's entirely up to you. Do you want one and can you afford it?

We didn't have one and my sister and BIL didn't either.

We had one, both sets of parents threw it for us so there was no extra cost to us, which was really kind. We just had a BBQ/garden party in my in-laws garden, was really nice. Loads of family there and a big cake, plus it was a beautiful sunny day. We didn't ask for gifts and didn't expect any but some people did bring some for us, which was really nice.

I would say its up to you and your oh and what you want. We didn't ask for one but enjoyed it (we'd been together over 8yrs at the time so it was a long time coming). My brother was due to get married 5 months after our engagement party and they did not have one (they got engaged in December 4yrs previous and my parents asked them but they didn't want one). However after seeing that we got gifts they moaned that they didn't get a party or anything and that they wished they did, to my mums annoyance as they made out they hadn't been offered one! For them it was all about what they would get out of it - really not how they should think about things!

We got engaged 2 weeks ago and have planned a BBQ in our back garden, open house type thing so people can pop in and out as they please :) it all got very complicated when we were looking for venues for an engagement party, aswell as expensive, which is why we opted for a BBQ and friends and family are bringing dishes and drinks (and chairs!!)
Good luck with your plans :)
