I had the discussion with H2B a couple of days ago about what his thoughts on my name after the wedding is. He told me straight out that he would not be changing his name, which i don't expect him to do, and that i should drop my name to take his as that's tradition. Which is all fine and whatever but he sure as hell hasn't stuck to tradition anywhere else. I really don't want to drop my name. I was thinking of having his as well only my name is Wilson and his is Morgan, two quite long names and I'm not certain Nicole Louise Wilson Morgan really has a ring to it. I prefer Nicole Louise Morgan Wilson but is this allowed? Does it just turn it into my middle name? and is double barreling these long names too much?

    What is everyone else doing?

    Thanks

I would do whatever you feel comfortable with.
I wouldn't say that they are too long to double barrel and double barreling your surname does not make it your middle name. It can go either way round so entirely up to you. You will have to live with your name for the rest of your life so it isn't something you need to take lightly. x

I am going to take my OHs name but he hasn't forced me into this decision it was something that I wanted to do.

thanks :) I'm blaming my dad for this, he had three daughters and always told us he would be upset if we all dropped the family name ahaha. I think I like Morgan Wilson as two separate names but then comes the issue of naming children in the future. Good thing I have a while to wait until the wedding, wouldn't like to be making the decision under pressure x

It is something that you need to talk to him about. But she should entirely respect your decision to want to keep your name. By double barrelling you are accepting his name and showing the world that you have both welcomed the others family. I hope you find something that you both agree on x

I think Morgan-Wilson sounds lovely as a double barreled name. I wouldn't worry too much about your middle name - you will rarely give all names or say them all out loud, most of the time you would probably say Nicole Morgan-Wilson. As Emily said, he should respect your decision either way as it's what you are going to be called for the rest of your life... by double barreling you are still taking on his name, you are just keeping your own "identity" in the process and is becoming increasingly more common nowadays.

    Morgan-Wilson sounds great.
I have the same problem as i love my second name! It doesnt go with OHs second name though! He has a unusual name so it sounds a bit strange if i doubled it up with mine!

I think Morgan-Wilson sounds lovely, you should definitely go for it!

I'm lucky in that I will get the best of both worlds - I'll probably keep my surname for my job as that's how I'm known in my industry, but I'll take OH surname for my private life. It will be like leading two lives! :-)

we were both thinking of having double barrel surname but I quite like the fact that I'm taking his on and my surname is longer than his so would be silly to double barrel it. I'd rather just change mine as I also don't want our children to have double barrel and I want the same name as them - when we have them lol

I think Morgan-Wilson is lovely xx

If your worried about passing your family name on to you children don't. My mum changed her name when she married my dad however when I was born she gave me her maiden name as a middle name, when my brother was born she gave him a double barreled name using her maiden name and her married name, the idea being that our family name would not be lost. I have carried on this idea and my lo has my mums maiden name as a middle name and her daddy's (my h2b) name as a surname. When my brother marries (should she want to) his wife will take the hyphened name as her own.

My name is currently Faye-Marie Hutchinson. After the wedding I'll be Faye Marie Hutchinson-Phillips and H2B will be William Hutchinson-Phillips.
It is long and I love it! People will have to deal. Never in my life have i heard someone go "that b*tch who wanted the really long name".. people just don't bother.

Also I think It doesn't matter what order your names go in! As long as you like it. Personally i don't think your OH has much right to dictate what your name will be, and it's 2016 for Christ's sake, balls to tradition. There's a certain amount of heritage and identity in a name that I just wasn't willing to let go, luckily H2B has been really good about it and wants to be a Hutchinson-Phillips too.

My signature at the moment is basically a child's signature, I just write my first initial and my surname out, no fancy writing just normal! Hoping I can come up with something a bit more fancy for my new name.

I very rarely have to spell out my surname to people but OH does all of the time, his name is Pimblett, everybody has the same look of confusion when they try to spell it!

My signature is just a squiggle. When I first used it, it did resemble my initial and surname but now its just ups and downs. Its really hard to copy and for the house I have had to be so careful with which signatures I do so that they all match..

Wish I had, didn't occur to me until I changed my name at the bank, had to do new signature so I scribbled one, stuck with it now and I don't like it!

My maiden name was Day, my married name is Kafizas (Greek, said as kafeeza) no combination of the two sounded good so I decided not to double barrel. I like your combination though.
