My mom asked what the colour theme for the wedding was the other day and when I said the groomsmen will be wearing navy suits she joked (or at least I thought it was a joke) that she would have to go out and get a navy outfit. Now the mother of the groom has seen an outfit she likes but my fiancé as told her she needs to wear the wedding colours as it is tradition and that my mom will be.

I was just wondering what you all thought about what the mother of the bride & groom should wear? My fiancé has in his head that traditionally they wear the wedding colours but I don't want them wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids or ushers. I just wondered whether this is something that does happen that I don't know about or I need to have gentle word with my mom explaining that I don't want her in the colours. Looking on the forums online it just follows the formality or theme but not necessarily the colour.

It doesn't matter at all.. some people like the mothers to be coordinated with the wedding party, some don't.. in my opinion it's just personal preference. My colour scheme was pastels and I had my bms and flower girl in peach, baby blue, sage green, lilac and yellow. The mums wanted to wear a colour that complemented the scheme but without being matchy matchy... my MIL wore a very soft pink and my mum wore a soft blue/turquoise x

I think I've heard that the mum's normally match the bridesmaids. Both our mums wore navy dresses with flowers of lilac/purple shades. They were similar dresses and neither spoke to one another regarding it.

Nowadays, tradition isn't a big thing so I would say do what you feel is right for you. I personally didn't know about this!

Thanks for your responses guys. I had never heard about it before but he had got it into his head so just wanted to check whether it was something I was just oblivious too and they would expect it

I haven't even brought the bridesmaid dresses yet (hoping for a mint green colour) but the mother of the groom brought a dress the weekend for it. x

I don't think it matters what colours they wear.

All eyes will be on you and your new husband.

Looking forward to becoming the 3rd and last Mrs McLauchlan

Never heard of that! Our colours were dusky pink and silver but my Mum wore a cerise jacket with a cream dress with flowers on and my MIL wore a red jacket with a poppy patterned dress. I really don't think it matters - as long as they feel comfortable and confident with what they are wearing.
