Hi, I'm just wondering has anyone made their own wedding cake? I make cakes and cupcakes and would like to do my own but I'm wondering would I be putting too much pressure and stress on myself? so just wondering if anyone else has done it and not been too stressed!

Some brides on here have made their own but I do think it is brave. If you're confident you can make them and have time for all the other wedding bits in the last week leading up to the big day then go for it. Mi guess it depends on how intricate and complicated decoration on the cake is.

I'd be worried more about the time pressure than anything else. I was talking with some of my married friends a few days back and they encouraged me to take the whole week before my wedding off work as it will be really busy, so it might be that you don't have much time to make a cake! Do you have any friends/family who would be able to help? Maybe you could bake it and get someone else you know/a professional to decorate it or vice versa :)

My mum made ours and she said it wasn't really too bad if you're organised. How about doing a trial run and seeing how you find it? Don't forget you'll have people around you in the last week who will do anything you ask to help you out!! And if you get everything done a week or 2 early you could be fine, I remember a lot of my last week was socialising lol xxxx

Im planning to do the same. Like you Iv made cakes and cupcakes for friends so I know I can do it. I worry that I will stress myself out with it, but my budget it tight so I really need to do this. I will be doing a practice run I think, and I want to give freezing the sponge in advance a go as I havent done that before and think it will save a lot of time and stress.....hope all goes well (for both of us) :-D
Hiya. I made my own. I had a fruit cake for the bottom tier. i made this about 6 months in advance (stores easily for a long time!) then nearer the time I made a tier each of; lemon and rosemary, orange and dark chocolate (with cointreau) and a red velvet. I froze those layers until a couple of days before and then me and one of my bridesmaids iced them and stcked them. Just make sure to wrap them thoroughly if you're freezing them. Grease proof paper and clingfilm. I g00gl3d how to frreze cakes. Hope this helps.

By the way, I was worried about freezing them as I had never done it before, but everybody complimented me and I've had quite a few requests for more! So freezing doesn't take away from the taste!

We had friends make ours and even without us doing them it was an awful lot of extra work due to last minute problems. I wish we had got a professional one, as the last week would have been far quieter. The lady who was going to decorate the cakes (five friends each baked one) let us down, so we spent ages buying icing and ribbons, getting icing to bakers, and collecting cakes which MIL spent ages putting ribbons on. It ate up an awful lot of the last week. If the decorator hadn't let us down it would have been fine, but as it was we should have abandoned any theme and just let people use whatever icing worked best.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

MariaP483, this is our reason for doing it mainly budget! On the cake side of things I'm not too bothered as I I'm planning on having a giant cupcake/one cake and then lots of cupcakes which I can make and decorate cupcakes in my sleep! I'm use to making a minimum of 48 cupcakes a week anyway, I'm more thinking of everything else going on with the lead up, my mum and bestie are fab at cake making too so I know I can have help if need be xx

My sister and I made about 500 cupcakes 3 days before her wedding. It wasn't so bad as we had a good timetable for everything, but the week before the wedding was properly hectic and tiring. For my wedding I decided to buy in made cakes (good ol' M&5) and decorate them myself, will probably do it on the Thursday (Wedding is on a Sat) x

Of course you can try but if I were you I would two. One a few weeks before wedding to try if it will work and one main one for wedding if everything goes well with previous one. I also think that it is really brave, you have enough stress so won't it be too much?
