    Hi everyone

We've been working through the ceremony pack from the registry office, picking our vows etc.

Does anyone know if you HAVE to pick one of the phrases they give you when exchanging rings or whether we can come up with something of our own? Neither of us really like the wording of the ones they have given, they're a bit OTT. I've emailed the registry office and left a voicemail message but they're taking ages to get back to me! :-(

We have changed that bit and haven't heard back from registry office to say that we cant. I think it's the other bits that you must include certain words/phrases but I think the ring promises can be personal - nothing legal there ( you don't *have* to exchange rings so it must be so x

    According to Haringey council...
Words that must be included in a ceremony

A wedding is made up of two parts which are the Declatory and the Contracting Words.

    The Declatory Words

These words are at the start of the ceremony and must be included. The Declatory Words are shown below:

" I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I [name] may not be joined in matrimony to [name]."

    The Contracting Words

These are the legal words that marry you and these feature towards the end of the ceremony. The Contracting Words are shown below:

"I call upon these persons here present, to witness that I [name] do take thee [name] to be my lawful wedded wife/husband."
Additional words can be added before or after the contracting words to complete your wedding vows.

    Civil Partnership Words

Unlike a marriage ceremony there are no legal words that need to be said when forming a Civil Partnership. Most ceremonies do however include the following paragraph which can be included at any point in the ceremony.

" I declare that I know not of any legal reason why we may not register as partners in law. I understand that on signing this document we will be forming a civil partnership with each other."

At ours because it is a civil ceremony, u can have any vows u want, but u need to discuss it with the registrar beforehand....to make sure they think they are appropriate,u don't have to follow the normal guidelines x

They've let us add in our own vows as long as we include the legal bits. Almost Mrs B has a point - you don't HAVE to exchange rings so surely the bits you say aren't set in stone. Fingers crossed anyway!
