I think most ppls deposits have been half the cost of the dress but not sure?
I know you can pay off over time tho so maybe ask and see if thats an option?

Mine was only half, and I pay the rest when it comes in. I never thought of a deposit as being more than half an amount, but that's just me.

We've opened a wedding savings account (normal savings account but we call it the wedding savings) Evry month we put in the equivelent of a monthly payment for things and then when the time comes we've got the money and don't need to go without to pay for things.
Could be something to look into for yourselves. xxx

I think it depends how long it is until you get married...but that sounds abit steep. I paid £200 and now am making £100 per month payment until February 2011 when it will be paid off.....as its 14 months until you get married I can't see why the shop can't work out a deal for you! xx

I paid the deposit on my dress yesterday and it was 50%. The rest is due when the dress comes in (and I've been told 16 to 20 weeks).

I got a fab deal with all my dresses!! i picked my 7 bridesmaid dresses coming to £1100 and then i picked my dress which is £900 and then my veil and tiera and hoop for my dress, and all i had to put down was £400, and this was in feb! I haven't heard anything from them since! i know my wedding is a bit away, but i have a jar at home just for my dresses, when i open it i will go and pay a big chunk of money off!!

I would never of thought of having to put £800 down in one go! Didn't even put this much down as deposit on a venue!! xxx

that definately sounds a bit steep. i only got a £100 dress from ebay, but from what i hear the deposit is a max of 50% and most stores have a pay monthly option. i might be a little wary of a company that want so much up front.

oh thats a little odd. i would have expected it to be a little local store than a chain with that sort of deposit. maybe go back to them and ask if you could reduce the deposit to 50%? it might just be that this amount is what they always initially offer then if a customer asks they can sort out some other kind of deal instead.

most places want 50% deposit- but if you ask then its up to the discretion of the shop if they will let u pay a smaller amount.

Like the majority of people have said its usually 50% or less. My dress was £1400 and the deposit was £700 and the rest to be paid when i could pay it-then the dress would be ordered x

Mine was half (just over £800) and the rest is due when we collect the dress. I paid about 2 months ago now, and I don't even get measured until next month! x

Same with me - half when I order and have the measurements taken, and then the balance a month before the wedding for my final fitting - so at least the timescale for collecting your dress seems within normal limits.

the dress shop i popped into was very lovely £100 deposit and i could drop in money each week here or there however much i could afford each time as long as the dress was paid for before the day the lady is very friendlu and helpful xx

My dress was down from £1400 to £800 in sample sale and the bridal shop wanted half up front and then I was to pay it off via direct debit each month cause they already had it in store! I asked out right could I just pay a £250 deposit and they agreed! Think that if you ask chick they may work with you and your situation, at the end of the day there still 'making' money from you!xx
