We have been trying to plan our wedding on a budget and don't fancy getting married in a hotel. We thought about a barn at first, but soon realised that it wouldn't be as cheap as we thought. Our next stop was village/community halls. Went to view one tonight and we were told that they charge by the head for electricity, hall hire, tables, chairs, crockery, cutlery etc. £15 per head for day and £5 per head for night. Now, that's without food!

Does anyone else think that £1750 is a bit expensive for a blank village hall? I'm losing hope!

    OMG That does seem steep.

We are having a village hall for our reception and its £10 per hour hired.
We have use of all tables chairs cutlery etc at no further cost (damages obviously will be charged for)

Maybe it varies as to how many other possible venues are close by.

Personally I wouldnt even entertain that as an idea.

As a bride on a budget too that would be over half our budget.

    £3,000- £4,000 for 40-60 guests

I got our village hall for £150 for the whole night. The girlies from the village are doing it up for me. You might be better finding a hall that hires for cheaper and spending £300 or so hiring a wedding dresser company who will make it up beautifully. Thankfully we've landed on our feet with our local hall. Hope you find something which suits! xx

yes very expensive! I've just been part of a lovely wedding as a bridesmaid which in total cost around 3500 that was everything, from dress, food registrar to evening do! (also including dresses that went wrong) plus my ceremony ( village hall/ centre) and reception is in a little village and the cost of hiring both is less then 500 but what i get back if i spend a certain amout makes it 350? Xx

Have you thought about getting married in a registry office and then having the reception elsewhere.

Thanks guys - I did think it was a bit much! Most village halls I thought charged by the hour. Maybe they're just greedy! They have a bar as well and would make all the money from it, so I'm not sure how they can justify that kind of cost! We did think of a registry office wedding, but the ones close to us only hold 25-30 people and we have way more close family/friends that we'd like to see the ceremony. I am quickly realising that some compromises will have to be made!! My dress is bought and paid for - £160 total, and we are saving money each month. It's suddenly seeming like it's a bit too much for me to actually deal with - I'm close to giving up with it all :(

That's incredibly expensive! We're having a vilage hall too and ours cost £280 from 12 noon on Friday until 12 noon on Sunday..including a cleaner! We'll be having about 100 people at our reception so really glad they're not charging us per head!

Our reception venue gave us the room itself for free. that's the sort of place you should be looking for.

I've just re-read your original post; "Went to view one tonight and we were told that they charge by the head for electricity, hall hire, tables, chairs, crockery, cutlery etc." ...that should all come inclusive in the hire fee, not on top of! greedy is an understatement!

Thanks guys - I might send the ladies an email just saying that while we like the hall, we really thought it would be more in line with what other village halls charge and we just don't have that kind of money to pay per head. You never know, they may come back and offer a further reduced price - if not, it's their loss!

The cost of my venue was down to the time of the week/year and done on an hourly rate. Our whole venue would have cost slightly over £1000 if we rented it on a weekend but we're renting it on a weekday which is a massive save. Our venue is a council run center so it's much cheaper than renting a hall.

If you're budgeting I suggest renting a venue during the weekday and if they charge hourly then to rent it later on during the day. But that hall seems stupid to charge per head.

wow that is really expensive. We are having a manor house hotel but our wedding venue package only cost £3999. Thats including room hire, 3 course sit down meal for 60 people, drinks, evening reception for 120 people, and all the extras added in - that even included the ceremony but we have decided to have a church wedding. that is stupidly expensive for just a room x

have you tried your local masonic hall? ours is £125 for the whole day for the whole building and includes 1 bar tender. If over 30 people we will need a 2nd bar tender for an extra £35.

we can use our own caterers or theirs, we will be getting someone in ourselves and this works out to be £350 for food. our food will also be made with more expensive ingredients due to our sons food allergy and we are not being charged more for this.

It is well worth looking into.

Wow that's expensive! Is the reason for not looking at hotels because they are too expensive or do you just not fancy it? If its because of price, it might be worth looking into, we got married in a beautiful Victorian era style hotel in York, they had an offer on so we got room hire for the full day, 4 course wedding breakfast for 40 guests, hog roast for the evening do for 60 guests, and a welcome drink of wine for everybody. It was £999 :) but your initial post sounds very expensive! The thing is whenever you put the word 'wedding' in front of anything, people try to rip you off :(
