Hi, I recently sent out wedding invites and realised afterwards I haven't informed guests that they will get 4 free drinks from us (upon arrival at the reception, 2 glasses of wine during the meal and one during the toast), however if they want any more to drink they will have to pay for it themselves and the additional evening guests will have to pay for their drinks. I wanted to know a way to tell the guests- we cant pay for anymore drinks due to our budget. Thanks

I must admit I hadn't thought I needed to tell guests. I have never personally been to a wedding where there has been a free bar all night. Usually just get drinks with the meal and then pay for our own so I wouldn't think people need telling.

Depending on where you have your reception maybe just give them the heads up if they can't pay on their debit cards just so people are prepared x

I wouldn't worry about it, I'd say it was fairly standard for guests to have to buy their own additional drinks at a wedding. As a guest I would absolutely be prepared to pay for my own drinks and would make sure I had money with me. Maybe just mention it in conversation with whoever you get to see before the wedding, but otherwise I really wouldn't worry about it. We never made a point of telling our guests that the venue would be operating a cash bar.

Thanks for the advice. I was just wondering as I have certain family members who love to have a drink especially if it's on someone else. So most definitely I will have to say something to them about it so they do not act surprised when they arrive

I will be mentioning it on our invites purely for the fact that our venue is in the middle of nowhere so getting to a cash point would not be an easy task and wouldn't want anyone to get caught out

No need to mention at all. No guests should expect drinks and presume they'll be provided. We didn't tell any of our guests it was a pay bar and all the weddings I've been to none of the couples have informed guests there is a pay bar. Guests should abring a means of buying themselves drinks x

Agree definitely no need for it. We didn't, and I haven't been to a wedding that warned in advance of a cash bar.

I agree with the others ladies who have said it's not necessary. I always assume I will need to buy my own drinks at a wedding xx

I would wait until you have all the RSVPs back and maybe send a reminder out to them that it is. My friends were at a wedding and were not informed of this so had no money on them, they had no cash machines there either and were in the middle of nowhere. I had to get money out for them and pass it on when I went in the evening. It's best to let them know in case they think they can use their cards.

It does tend to be expected that you buy your own drinks however you always get the cheeky ones that push their luck or the ones who simply didn't think. We even had people that picked up more than one arrival drink and more than one fish and chip cones canapé of which there was one each so some of my guests went without because of the greed of others .. just make sure you tell the hotel you will not be paying any bar bills

I agree it shouldn't need to be mentioned, I have only been to one wedding which was an open bar and that was stated, rather than the other way round. xx
