I am just flabbergasted at the cost of these things! We are on a serious budget and I really don;t want to pay loads for a wedding cake that probably won't get eaten. Equally i don;t want something rubbish looking in the pictures. I originally wanted cupcakes but wasn't sure how many to get - would I get enough for one each for the day guests or does it need to include evening guests too? It starts to get crazy when you're talking about 100 evening guests. Has anyone got any ideas on making this a bit cheaper?

I know a few people who bought theirs from high street grocery shops. They are just the white icing covered cakes, but they come in different sizes, so you can stack them and they are like blank canvases, so you can decorate them with ribbon as you like. We are having one single cake with enough cupcakes for all the quests, but we are lucky, as my Grandma is making them for us for free, saving us a small fortune.

Is there any chance you could gather friends/fam and have a cake-making day? I'm making Cookies for favours and I have to make 130! I'm having a couple of days with friends and family round to make them a few days before, I hope it'll be fun...not stressful!

Just had a quick look at the emm and esss website and I could get 96 cupcakes for £96 (they come in batches of 48). They're plain vanilla but we could add our own bits of sparkle. I don't think they will get eaten at the meal as everyone has a dessert and there's a candy cart. The evening buffet doesn't include a dessert so could serve them then. Just don't want to be left with loads of spare cakes!
Have you got a design in mind? I've got a picture in my album of how I want mine. Just get enough to make it look the way you would like it. If it's not meant as a desert or favour, then I wouldn't buy for every guest. Would be a shame to waste so many cupcakes. (btw you're making me hungry lol)

If you're on a tight budget take a look at naked or uniced cakes. I'm having one and it's costing £60 for three tiers decorated with fresh fruit. They're not everyone's cup of tea but can look stunning x

Why dont you look at making your own? Or get someone else to do it? My mil2b is making our 3 tiered one and cupcakes for the reception. Not only does it save her money but also gives her something to do and feel included! Xxx

They are extortionate! Could you call on a friend? Luckily, my friend owns her own cake making busines so is making ours. X

I really like the naked cakes to be honest. Not sure if we'll go for one or not, but we have a friend making the cake (we will pay her but waiting to hear how much she will be charging)
We have to have a cake big enough for everybody as we've decided to have the cake cut up and then put out on the evening buffet as it doesn't include anything sweet, so we'll have the cake out and looking at getting a sweetie cart too.
I also like the idea of buying ready iced cakes and decorating them yourself. There are ways around it
