I've been wondering about this too, as the shop i've got my dress from the hoops seem a bit pricey and the bay of E seems to have them allot cheaper but not sure what style or type i'd need, think i'll ask when I go in a few weeks to show my BMs the dress!

But I'll bookmark this post in case anyone else has some good advice x

i've bought a two hoop one rather than the one hoop i've tried in the shop the benefit is that it is adjustable so i can make it smaller if i have to, just need to hope its not too short now that i've swapped shoes too :-S should have done in for another try on but never mind

I bought one off ebay and tried it on with my dress on sunday. I bought a 3 hoop one but had to take 2 hoops out cos my dress wasnt sitting right with it.
Id rather not have one as they look horrible but if it helps me to walk then so be it.

Im so glad im not the only one having this dilemma!! It was only yesterday i posted something about hoops. Them darn things!
My problem is i didnt buy my dress from a bridal shop and cannot remember what hoop type i tried on with my dress when i did go to a bridal shop. I managed to buy a 2 hoop from the Bay for......a whole 68p!! (£6 with postage) from China. So even if it doesnt suit i'll just sell on. If anyone knows what would suit mine its a AA 1516. Sorry didnt mean to hijack your post x

Yeah the wedding dress shop seems really expensive for what it actually is (a bit of netting lol)
Think I will go with ebay- I know the dress is A-line, I just have no idea what crinolene is!!
Thanks for all your advice fellow B2B's!

I'm looking for a hoop too. Just went into all the 'vintage shops' in town today, most of them didn't have a clue what I was after. One has said she will ring me if she gets one in as they fly off the shelves, but I would rather find one elsewhere just incase.

Have seen some on the bay for about £8 but it says 'disposable' and am confuzzled.

Yeah I am stuggling with this as well, didnt see the point until the bridal shop said dress would be hard to walk in without it. Going to have a look online as the bridal shop charge a fortune for them! found a couple on e bay so will hopefully get one a lot cheaper than the shop is charging.

there are different shapes and styles of hoops depending what style dress you have.
I THINK i will need a train one with my chosen dress.
I THINK (and i could really be wrong here) that the more hoops the more poofier outtier the dress - is that how it works?

I MAY just go for layers of netting under mine

Yes I thought that had something to do with it! Dependant on the style of dress will depend on the type of petticoat/hoop you get for underneath..My dress is an A line style dress so am going to get a 1 hopped 2 layered petticoat xx

This was confusing me too! I am after a mermaid style one (not too many on the bay of e) and not sure how many hoops I need or what crinolene is? again don't want to get from bridal shop as too expensive. Off there this Saturday to try on the dress so might ask what they think I will need. Didnt want one at first until I walked in a dress with one and it wad so much easier :) x x

Well as the seller on ebay still hasn't got back to me as to what 'disposable' means. I'm thinking I might attempt to make one as I only need a single hoop. Using an old bed sheet and a childs hula hoop. It doesn't look that difficult actually, just lots of sewing as I don't own a sewing machine.

I'm wondering if I can get away with a multi layer petticoat rather than a hooped skirt as I really don't like them, but the skirt of my dress is quite big, any of you ladies know whether I can do that instead?? xx

It depends on your dress. As a general rule if you tried your dress on in the shop with one you need one.

I tried my dress on with a hoop in the shop, but really cant stand the idea of them, so hope I can get away with a multi layered petticoat. Will ask the shop when I have my first fitting. xx

I have jupon petticoat, and although a little more exspensive, totally worth it. It has layers of net and a hoop underneath so there is no clear outline of the hoop, it just adds a shape to the dress :)

I tried a Jupon 163 on in the shop with my dress, then found it cheaper online on a website so got the shop to price match - I think this is important you try with the dress as they come in different lengths and waist sizes - mine is a single hoop with 3 layers of net as I didn't want it too ball gown-y :-)

I wasnt sure if I needed one or not so ordered a cheapy one on ebay which was alright actually but I've decided not to go with the hoop in the end as it feels a bit weird on and I dont think it makes my dress look any different as such xx

the more hoops you have the higher up it will get wider (in theory that is lol) if you have the wrong type of underskirt/hoop on you will see it through your dress and your dress will fold over the hoop. i found it better to buy 1 with less hoops the sew stiff netting/tutu material on to it fill out my dress.

I've just made one. Took me a bit longer than expected as I sewed it a little too tight to fit hoop in then unpicked the wrong seam. But going to take it over to my dads so sis can try it on under her prom dress.

i bought a single hoop petticoat from ebay to go under my dress but eventually decided I was too tall for it and passed it on to someone else HOWEVER when I went for my fitting on monday I realised that my dress doesn't actually need a hoop anyway. I tried it on with one when I bought it so just assumed it needed one, but when I put it on without it actually site nicer. So what I'm getting at is just make sure you actually need one before you start worrying about which one to get :o)
