Hi all! Im new so bare with me.lol. Ok! so I just phoned the registry office to book my wedding. I need to give notice next Friday! Problem....they'v asked for mine and my parents mothers birth certificate. Now I can get mine no problem, but my partner has no contact with his mother at all! Even if we could get hold of her, she probably wouldn't give it to him! Im at a loss on what to do! Any ideas? x

Why on earth do you need your Mothers birth certificates?? We never had to provide them, it was our own, plus some identification for us. That's baffled me, not sure if anyone else has come across this though.

Ask them if anything else can be used as I have heard this a number of times and I didn't have my own birth certificate let alone my mums. We took in proof of address and passports check if something like that is enough for your area :)

Not sure why you need your mother's birth certificate, we have been told all we need is proof of name and address for me and H2B (such as a utility bill) and a passport, that's it. I would check with them again and if it's right, explain the situation and ask if anything else can be used.

Im not quite sure myself....I think its because neither of us have passports! This has really put a downer on things for me as I just cant see how we can get our hands on it! I mentioned that we are not in contact with her and they said theres no way I can give notice without it. just my luck! x

That's ridiculous, what happens if that parent is deceased or the child was adopted, they would have no way of getting a birth certificate then. They cannot penalise you for not having contact with a parent and unable to get hold of something which really has nothing to do with the marriage. It's purely to check to make sure you are elegible to get married here.

I think you can order copies of birth certificates if you have enough info.. though you have to pay for the privilege.

I would phone them back, explain the situation and see what they can recommend. x

It sounds like they are being very unhelpful, I'd phone back and ask to speak to someone else and like Flossie says see what they recommend. Not sure you can get a birth certificate if it is not for you and the person is still living though. Could be wrong.

Gf that what concerned me when I heard this in the past as my mum was adopted and has past away so had no chance of getting it.

Give them a call and explain once more it's impossible to get those items and what else is needed or check out direct gov website to see what is needed as Id in your area :)

I was just thinking I wonder if I can get a copy myself.....only problem is I don't have any info about her and my partner wouldn't really know. I explained the situation again and the reply was that there is no way around it. I never realised just booking the day would be so blooming hard!

Wondered if they had any further info on their website but no joy..

    What documents will I need?

You will need to bring the following documents with you to your interview:

Your current valid passports or birth certificates (If you were born after 1st January 1983 and do not have a passport, a full birth certificate must be produced together with your mother's birth certificate or passport)
Confirmation of address (driving licence, recent utility bill etc).
If you have been widowed, the death and marriage certificate of your late spouse.
If you are divorced, your decree absolute (with an original seal)
If you have formally changed your name, documentary evidence of this
If you were born outside the UK your passport or travel document.

I cannot believe there is no other way around it though. There must be loads of people born after 1st January 1983 getting married who don't have a passport and who can't obtain their mother's birth certificate..

I personally think it is outrageous they are asking for it, but hey, each council are different I suppose. Just something I have never heard of, and I've been married twice and never had to show it.

Iv never heard of it either...I didn't know what to say when she said there's no way around it. I wonder how people who there is no hope of getting hold of it manage to get married. Fingers crossed I can! Lol. x
