we sent off for a brochure seemed a good deal but they don't put a reception in the package so you will have to organise and pay for that too, they will send you a list of places, just look up gretna green and email them for a brochure has all the info you need, we decided against it in the end beacause some of my family wouldn't be able to travel that far we are right down south. but it seemed a good deal and lovely places to choose from, seem to cater for every budget, there was someone who got married in gretna here but can't think who it was xx

they do a few packages at a good price up there, but there's still transport and food you need to worry about so depends on how many would be going I spose. I looked into it and would have got a coach for those who couldn't/wouldn't srive it but wanted to come, but by the time you've fed them all (and they had somewhere to sleep) it wrked out cheaper to stay local. I'd love a Scottish wedding though as I am Scottish but living in Bristol, but adly it is not to be!

hI :o) Sorry to hear about your financial troubles. Just thought that I would reply because my mum and dad renewed their wedding vows at Gretna Green in April. It was only a small do, with about 10 of us but we thought it was fantastic! They had the ceremony at the old blacksmiths and then went back for a meal at a really nice hotel just down the road, it was literally like 2 minute walk. The food was fantastic, rooms top notch and people were very friendly x

We're getting married at Gretna Green. We were originally going to get married here in Leeds - but decided that we wanted just a small wedding and started looking online at Gretna. If you look google 'gretna wedding bureau' you can actually cusomise a package to suit you. That's what we've done. Their packages include venue for ceremony, car, photography package and extras such as flowers, wedding cake, DVD service - and even kilt hire, doves or a piper if you want one lol.

They're quite reasonable and at least things are booked for you. I've rang them with questions a few times and they're very helpful - and we even went for a look at the beginning of the year and our venue had been booked and we were even allowed to look round the room as they're wasn't a wedding going on at that time (they even talked us through the ceremony etc which helped with the planning).

There are a lot of hotels that cater for receptions as well - big or small. We visited the Solway Lodge, tried the restaurant and decided to book. Again, the staff there are v friendly as well. IT Man , the manager, actually gave us a full tour of the hotel and restaurant before we booked and has told us that if we need something for the wedding that the hotel don't offer - such as cake etc - he knows the locals and can help sort out things like that.

I'd definitely recommend a Gretna Green wedding. We get married August 2011 and can't wait.

    Hi Mym72

Thank you for all the information you have posted it's been really reassuring that other people are getting married in Gretna Green me & my partner have been looking at Gretna Green & were going to look around a few places next month to see which we prefer, currently we want to get married in the Anvil Hall & have the reception in either the Hetland Hall or the Dryfesdale Hotel but I wanted to view them before we mae a decision. We are lookig to get married in July 2011 but theres so much to do I like the fact that you can use the wedding planning service, I looked up the Gretna Wedding Bureau & their packages look really good so we will be using them so thank you again for the above info.

My friend got married there and her photos looked amazing. I wouldn't say it's the cheepest option though so shop around. Ask your local reg office for a list of places you can get married at and you may be surprised

Ms Sunshine - not to pry but you are very close to the wedding - would you lose a lot of money in deposits and the like?

How far away are you from being able to afford the wedding you have planned - for example could guests help out with the cost instead of presents?

    Just an idea.

I was interested in a gretna wedding as it looks lovely, but soon realised that if you try to add a hotel reception it adds up, there are so many hotel deals out there where you can get married for under £1000 which includes wedding, reception meal for a small amount (typically 30..50 max) and disco!

Ive just booked my wedding in gretna green for aug 2011. Were getting married at the mill forge then having a meal for 16 people at the dryfesdale hotel and staying for 2 nights.
We compared the cost of having an evening reception with buffet for 100 guests locally or just taking very close family to gretna green and having a sit down meal and paying for them all to stay and gretna worked out cheaper!

We did the same - it was either a bigger evening reception here in Leeds or around 20 of us in Gretna. We're staying 2 nights as well so it's like a mini break combined with the wedding as well. We get back to Leeds the day after the wedding - then fly out to Malta 2 days after that.

so, here it goes. we are now thinking about gretna green instead of a registry office. i have looked on the website and they offer packages just for the bride and groom and provide the witnessess which i think is perfect for me.(i suffer bad from anxiety and i think having my family around me is too much, i much prefer a private ceromany just me and my oh). anyway has anyone done this before. how did u get on. the package i have found is the romance package at the mill forge which is £445 obviously price dependant to 2017 it includes ceromany venue, 2 nights in the bridal suite intimate 4 course meal for bride and groom, bucks fizz on arrival, sparkling wine to celebrate, witnesses if required (something we need) and a wedding planner assistance.. now how did this work for you guys like on the day of the wedding not letting the groom see the dress & obviously help getting into the dress. transport is it something thats needed tp get to the ceromany, is the 2 nights stay near?. and obviously we want photography how did you choose your photographer.. and most importantly what did you do after in terms of the meal and everything else ? arghh im pulling my hair out

Sorry for the long post im trying to find something thats perfect for us and gretna green sounds just that, but not making any decisions without hearing other peoples opinions and storys oof how theirs went. p.s i have never been to a wedding only seen it on the tv so i have no idea thankyou xxx
