Morning all. Hope you are all good. I had a lay in until 745am, well I was awake at 7 but stayed in bed until then. Sun is shining but cold as there is a frost.

Was meant to be working an early today but it has changed to a late.

Morning ladies, working from home again today - warned my boss I'd probably need to work from home all this week (off Thurs & Fri anyway) but thinking it might be easier if I go in tomorrow. Not comfortable with driving my car at the moment though so OH will be giving me a lift and picking me up again.

Took my car into the garage yesterday and it was behaving completely fine... so anyone who looked at it would not be able to find anything wrong at all. Bloody thing!!!! They advised to just keep driving it and bring it back to them as soon as something out of the ordinary happens to give them the best chance of diagnosing the problem, but knowing my power steering could cut out at any time without any warning makes me very nervous.

I think OH and I have decided to trade both our cars in and get a brand new one to share on finance. We won't get as much as I'd hoped for our cars but at the end of the day I think we're just cutting our losses. My car is 12 years old now and OH's is 9, I think it's time we got a proper "grown ups" car in preparation for babies etc and at least we know we won't be driving a potential death trap and it's hassle free motoring really as once the term is up we can just part exchange and get a new one again, 5 year warranty etc all we need to do is service it. It will seem strange at first sharing a car as we've been so used to having our own, but we work like 5/10 mins away from each other so it will work out.

Flossie, that was the best move I made going from an older car (well not that old it was an 05 plate) and getting a newer one. My old one was costing me around £1000 a year to get it through a MOT, then the tax and insurance was not too bad, same as what I pay now. I know I pay more a year for my car now than £1000 but it's reliable.

    Food looks lush GF!!!

We tried a Greek restaurant on V day, was very very nice. Got complimentary nibble-y bits at the start (bread, feta, olives and hummus), and they gave us a baklava desert on the house. Was lovely!

That's my main niggle GF, knowing we will basically be paying for something we never own - but we've had absolutely zero benefits of owning our own cars, it's just an endless money pit either way really isn't it! A car is never an investment, you're always losing money as soon as you drive a car off the forecourt, whether you buy an older car or a newer car. It will be nice to jump in a car and know it's reliable and safe. It's scary as it's the first time we've done it and it's a massive commitment, but I am sure we'll be so glad we did it and never look back!

Mines over 5 years, so at 5 years it is mine and I can do whatever I want with it, I had to do it over that length of time in order to be comfortable with the payments.

And yep, the food was amazing as ever, the scallops were so tender. JUst booked in for Mother's day there as well, a table of ten of us.

I think we're going for 4 years, but we're going for a PCP where we can choose to make the "balloon payment" at the end to own the car outright, or we can trade it back in for a new car and start the whole cycle again.

You could always sell it and use the money to put a deposit down on another new/newer car if you wanted to GF :-)

I will be really sad to say goodbye to my Mini, I love her!!! But have a feeling this is just the start of lots of things starting to go wrong, it would be silly to just throw money at it when it is 12 years old and she's not really going to go on for much longer.

Morning all busy afternoon so didn't get on yesterday. Had a lovely meal with OHs great aunt last night. Was lovely seeing her again

Flossie Its a big decision but like you say you get the reliability. OH wants to do something similar but I'm not 100% keen on having nothing to show for it at the end but like you say it's not worth the effort with older cars sometimes.

    It's the I20 Emily.

I just think you don't necessarily have much to show for your money when you own your car anyway. You buy a new car, it depreciates in value horrendously in a short amount of time, so you've lost money. You buy an older car, it still depreciates in value and you've got the added cost of potential repairs etc. Either way you're losing out!

Definitely. Totally agree, so you may as well have something that is new and reliable than something that is not.

I love being able to go out to my car and know it works and the engine will turn on first time, and you don't have to sit warming the engine up before driving off. My old car was good at starting, was only when the battery decided it had had enough did it not.

I think we would manage ok GF with the one car. We both work 8.30-5 Monday - Wednesday, OH would take me to work, go to his work (which is 5/10 mins down the road depending on traffic), collect me at the end of the day then go home via the dual carriageway. We normally leave home and get home at the same time anyway!

Thurs & Fri I finish at 5 but he finishes at 6.30 and 6 - so I'd drop him off at work in the morning, drive myself to work, go home at 5, walk the dog etc. then go and pick him back up.

At the weekends we normally just use the 1 car anyway as we usually do everything together. It's very rare that we go out in separate cars.

I'm sure it will take some getting used to but it makes sense to both contribute to the one car rather than continue to pay for 2 when we don't necessarily need 2.

Hope you get a good deal on both cars Flossie. Safety always comes first. It's hard to see cars go when you've had them for so long but like you say is this the start of problems to come and end up costing you a fortune. The white car is nice x

SOunds like it will be better for you both then, less petrol money, less tax, less eveyrthing with just the one car. When I got mine, they offered me £120 for my old one, I took it as it was classed as an insurance write off and I'd never have sold it for much here.

Yep, pretty chuffed to discover there is no tax for the first year then it's just £30 a year after that (we're both currently paying £180 per year per car)! Have done a rough insurance quote which came out at £25 a month. We're paying £45 a month at the moment for a multi-car policy.

Exciting about getting a car soon Em... bet you can't wait to get driving again after that long! Hopefully it will be just like riding a bike.. lol.

It's such a gorgeous day out there today, bright blue skies and sun shining. Even opened the windows downstairs to get some fresh air in - it's lovely! I've just had porridge with banana. I did 100% milk instead of half milk half water to try and get some more calcium in me but it was horrible.. I won't be doing that again in a hurry!

I'm planning ultimately to get a new car on finance. Both cars I've had so far have been old ones that always need work doing at the MOT and have various bits of wear and tear. They've done the job though. It'll be a few years yet before I can do it though, as I'm currently in an IVA, and with maternity leave coming up I'm going to have to take a payment break, meaning it's another couple of years before I'll finish paying that. Then it will be another year before my credit history is clear, at which point I can look at a joint account with my husband (we've kept our finances separate so far so that his credit rating doesn't take a hit as well as mine). Ultimately though I think we would plan to do what you're doing and get one new car between us. We've only ever had one, as hubby hasn't learnt to drive yet, though he has now got his provisional licence through and it is on the to do list for this year. We're both happy to walk a fair way, so I think one car between us will be workable. Where hubby currently works he couldn't drive anyway as there is no parking, and I wouldn't want to drive to work as the only carpark is pay and display and is £5 a day, which really adds up.

Michelle we would definitely need a bigger car for babies with mine. Also wondering how ill manage doing a full weekly shop in it as I can only get a couple of bags in the book. I have a K@ but there's a few things I have to keep with me for customer visits so I just leave them in the care permanently.
Mine is our next one to change because of size and also its not in as good condition as OHs, its 3 years younger but has done more miles.
I agree about the hiring it out and would rather buy but you can't always plan to save that much with a car it can go at anytime like Flossie's has so not always so easy. At least you will get the warranty and most of the work done on it that way though. That's a bonus.

You lose lots of money either way. My dad bought a new @ud1 outright and within less than a year of having it the value depreciated by £7k! He didn't get much out of being the out and out owner apart from losing lots of money. They're going to lease a car now too - my dad wants a big car this time round preparing for the grandchildren lol!

I don't blame you Flossie about your car and I too would feel really unreluctant to drive it if at any minute the power steering could literally cut out.

I've got a 206 - have had it from brand new and its an 07 plate, but has nearly 104,000 miles on the clock. OH has a Focus, which is a 06 plate and has over 145,000 miles on the clock. We did talk about maybe changing our cars, but all the time they're not costing us anything, I'll stick with mine. Touch wood I've never had any major problems with it, although it's overdue a service and must try and get it booked in after pay day.

Urgh, I've got to do a food shop on my way home tonight as well. Such a chore and a bind. We had a real thrown together dinner last night, so think I may do sweet chill prawn noodles tonight. OH is working in Oxford today and probably won't be home until gone 7pm as has to navigate around the M25.

I don't think I will ever want a big car, my F1@t Punt0 is fine sizewise at the minute, and I wouldn't anticipate needing to go much bigger. The reason I would be tempted to get a car on finance is that a new car would be so much more reliable and potentially cheaper to maintain. There are some things I fancy though, like the screen at the front that you can use to see where you are when you're reversing, and being able to take phone calls through the car. Having an integrated satnav would be nice as well.

    Afternoon ladies

Talking of cars I've been looking as I think I need a 7 seater, having 4 kids in and no more room is fine but I can't take anymore and o could have another two in my care in the holidays. Defo something for after the wedding though I love our car so we will keep our car good for us then have the 7 seater for the kids

    Xx

We wouldn't go for the real fancy model with all the gadgets, but the one we want does have bluetooth so you can take calls and link your phone to the car to play music etc. It has rear parking sensors, cruise control and lane assist but the models with the satnavs and screens are quite a bit more money - we could go all out but I think we'll start small and work our way up!!!

Definitely a good idea Sarah if it's a business need xx

Our car has Bluetooth and I love it defo would need that again in another car, I'm not a fan of pcp either but defo both have advantages depends what you prefer, our car at the end will be ours and that was better for us at the time. Defo for business purposes I need a bigger car we already have an estate and boot space is not a problem I just need more seats lol so defo think it could be an option for us later in the year xx

If we want to keep the car at the end we can, if we want to trade it in for another new one we can - it's hard to say what we will want to do in 4 years time so we will be keeping our options open. For once though it would be nice to have a bit of luxury in our lives rather than trying to do everything as cheaply as possible! Also like that with pcp the loan is secured against the car, rather than against you personally - which will be a plus if we apply for a mortgage in the next 4 years.

Sounds like it's a definite option Sarah - if you take on 2 more kids then that's more income you're earning that can ultimately go back into the car to keep it running etc xx

Yeah my sis does this with her car and she just starts again after 4 years, it defo is a good option for her and if it works for you then great and defo nice having a new car, best thing we did was buy new as our older car was starting to cost so much at mot time and the car we have now is only £30 a year tax which is awesome! Defo feel the same floss and earning more is never bad lol xx

I'd imagine Sarah that if you're registered self-employed and needing a bigger car due to your work you might be able to claim it as a business expense as well.
