My sil2b and I don't really get on. But as an olive branch we asked her to do a reading. We've had it back today in a sealed envelope. Turns out she wrote a poem (apparently a bit Pam Ayres ish - you'll only know who she is if you're old like me) she's asked us not to read it but to give it straight to registrar. I'm fuming as Carl thinks it's ok. I don't want surprises like that on my wedding day!! We compromised and my 17 yr old daughter read it. She said it was nice but not really relevant to us. I'm shaking with temper as it's not something I was expecting. Am I being unreasonable?

I'm in two minds. I wouldn't want any surprises in the service so I wouldn't be keen. However people do like to include things that the couple haven't seen or heard to make it special. We know what readings we're having, but won't have any say in the content of the sermon. Do you trust your daughter's judgement?

There's not a chance I would want anything in the actual ceremony that I didn't already know about!! Speeches are different but not the ceremony.

Probably worked out for the best

I wouldn't want a surprise like that during my ceremony, doesn't help that I'm not a fan of poetry. If I were in your shoes I wouldn't let her know how mad you are, but I would let her know that you don't want any surprise readings.

*Edit* somehow I missed your update. It's probably for the best but a shame you've had words over it.

I think i would be the same, to include her was a nice gesture in itself but for her to write something and not let you read it is a bit extreme! I personally would read it and then say yay or nay! xx

I hate surprises. I would just read it then decide and just pretend I have not read it.

I would open it. It's your day, and you both should know what the order of the day is. Given how things are with you both, there would also be an element of untrust as to whether there might be either a touch of sarcasm or a double edged meaning to her verses. There's certainly as reason why she doesn't want you to see it. Also the registrar might insist on seeing it to ensure it doesn't contain any religious references.

Still not read it and it's still causing issues between us and I've finally been called a bridezilla (I guess it had to happen sometime!!) I'm still fuming. So the outcome is still no readings in the ceremony.

    Just thought...
    what about a compramise......

have her poem printed up and left on seats fir guests to read as they arrive.. So then its still included in day but just say you got heart set on readings you wanted.

then its still special for you and your sister in law
