Im having a 3 tier wedding cake and I can choose whatever flavours I like for the tiers- I am pretty much dead set on a lemony one and a chocolate orange one- what flavour would you suggest for the final layer. I will be serving the cake as a dessert in the evening.

Have you thought about just a plain sponge?
I know we have some right fuddy duddys (like my dad) coming to our wedding and the only one he'd even consider eating would be a plain sponge or a big ol' fruit cake :P

We too have different flavours for our cake, we are having chocolate with white choc chips, banana and toffee and a vanilla sponge.

We are having a vanilla sponge because as has been said some people don't like certain cake flavours plus, generally, men don't like to mix beer with something sweet so thought it would be a good option to have for this reason too.

ooooh I like the sound of having chocolate cake with white choc chips! Bet it'll look lush when it's cut. So far I've decided on a carrot cake as my moh makes a beautiful carrot cake <3 and a vanilla sponge for fuddy duddy dad.

It depends... if you want to keep your top tier, I recommend that it is fruit to help keep it for longer!

I think fruit is really traditional and whereas there are people who don't like it, a lot do too and kind of expect it! :)

But maybe otherwise something even plainer than lemon or chocolate that may cater for fancy diets (dairy and gluten free!?!)

hmmm chocolate is my favourite- I hate fruit so i really dont want that and im not fussed about saving a layer.
White chocolate fudge sounds nice. Maybe ill go with a plain one then if that is the general consensus.

    We're having:

    Fruit (top tier)

    And then:

    Lemon sponge with lemon buttercream
Vanilla sponge with raspberry jam and buttercream
    Double chocolate

And either carrot cake, or toffee.

We're having 4 tiers plus a cutting cake, and are really undecided what to have for each. We were originally going to have vanilla sponge for the bottom tier or cutting cake, as we figured it'd be a crowd pleaser; but, after tasting them we actually think people might prefer the others :-s The vanilla was delicious, but the others were even better!

    Decisions decisions!

I'm struggling with this too and loving the sound of some of your ideas! I want fruit cake as top tier as want to do the traditional thing of saving it for first child's christening! But h2b wants another fruit cake layer as its what is expected and its traditional but its making it sooo expensive! xx

chocolate fudge or white chocolate fudge is yummy but heavy so my auntie will only put it on bottom tier but thats good cus white choc is H2B's favourite! i think we are going with small top tier traditional fruit so we can keep it for christening etc. you cant go wrong with a vanilla sponge with jam and buttercream and pretty much everyone likes it. or what about red velvet - its basically vanilla with red food colouring and few tablespoons of cocoa powder x

I'd say have a plain one like vanilla sponge or fruit cake.

We had four tiers. Fruit cake, vanilla sponge, chocolate sponge and lemon sponge. I'm not usually a cake fan but all four flavours were amazing.

This thread is giving me some seriously good ideas. We were looking at a three-tiered cake with vanilla sponge, chocolate and a more diabetic-friendly small tier, but have recently discussed four tiers. Just can't decide what to have as the fourth flavour!

I would suggest, add a final layer of black forest on this cake. It will look beautiful.
