    Hi all,

So i thought that slow dancing was easy, but we went to our friends engagement party a few weeks ago and got up for their mock first dance, and turns out my OH gets very nervous when slow dancing and we was abit of a awkward mess on the dancefloor!!

I've suggested getting a dance lesson before our big day, not for a routine but just to show us how to slow dance nicely so we dont get as nervous/stiff/awkward!!! Has anyone else done this and how did it go?

    Thanks x

Hubby is not one for slow dancing so he mixed a song with a dance version so that part way through we started jumping around instead.

I know EXACTLY how you feel, we always wind up toppling over or going into a side to side motion. I even resorted to looking up on youtube at simple slow dance steps. Seriously we cant dance at all, hahah but we always fall about laughing and you know what even if we do that on the day I dont mind because it makes us giggle.
So dance badly and enjoy it. hehe.

Also acceptable: Shuffling around on the spot.

We both have two left feet and OH was quite conscious about the first date and it looking awkward. In the end we bit the bullet and had a couple of sessions with a dancer who taught us a few techniques and an easy routine. We just practised lots at home after those two lessons so it looked natural for the big day. Having said that I was SICK of the first dance song before the actual wedding - we had Annie's Song by John Denver. Not your typical choice, but we both love 60s music and are a bit old-fashioned in our tastes (we don't even possess a docking station and I only discovered what Snap Chat was the other day!!)

Lol- OH and I hate being the centre of attention and OH has a neuro condition that causes his body to tremor- getting married will be bad enough so e are not having an official first dance, however I know that when the live band start playing we will be first on the dance floor but we will drag other people up too so it will be a casual unofficial first dance lol

Our favourite song is "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynard.

It starts slow, then half way through goes into a faster beat.

We are still debating having this as our first dance

Looking forward to becoming the 3rd and last Mrs McLauchlan

haha Stephanie, i think it may well be the awkward shuffling!! at least i know we arent the only ones!!

Lindsey do you think the dance lessons were well worth it then? Yea i can imagine that you would get sick of hearing the same song over and over if your constantly listening and practising, maybe ill try and save it for the last couple of weeks so we dont over do it lol

Michelle at least youll have lots of people on the danefloor so you wont feel to nervous!

Maxine i like that your song has a faster beat at the end, i find some slow paced songs can drag on abit

    xx

We went for the slow shuffle dance just turning round and round on the spot lol :-)

In the early days I was keen to do a choreographed dance but in the end didn't bother as I felt like I was putting too much pressure on my OH - I am a dancer anyway, so I think he felt a bit daunted by it all. If we were in the same boat and complete novices together then maybe it would have been different.

You get so lost and caught up in the moment anyway the last thing you'll be thinking about is what you're doing or how you're dancing. It's a special moment between the two of you and it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks xx

It may be a good idea just so he is able to gain more confidence. He'll get taught how to hold himself properly etc which will do wonders for his confidence... if you're in a class with other people as well he will get used to dancing in front of others. It will put less stress on him if he doesn't have to learn a choreographed routine as well xx

we are having a choreographed first dance, but not telling anyone at the wedding, this means that we will be doing more then just sway but if it goes wrong we can make it up as we go along!

Hello -yes we thought the lessons were definitely worth it. Shop around though if you decide to go down that route as some charge ridiculous money. I think we paid £70 for 4 hours of lessons. Some charge stupid money like £250.

I was so worried about this... As was my dad for our dance too! And I found 8r0up0n vouchers for 3 ballroom dance lessons for £12 each.
Dad loved it, despite us still doing the awkward rock/swing to metallica's nothing else matters.

Hubby went to one of the lessons and refused to go to the rest. We also did an awkward swirl round the room to start with. By the end of the song we were exaggerating the spins and swirls and singing the song to each other in fits of giggles...it was fabulous!!!

Don't worry too much, but lessons can be expensive so look on the voucher sites.

    Good luck

This thread is great, isn't it traditional to have an awkward sway? Especially if you have a big dress or a train.
Side tap and forward/back tap plus a twirl are all you really need unless you would like to do a routine, sure you'll be fine x

I feel your pain. My OH is so dead set against the awkward shuffle that will ensue that we're not having a first dance - we're doing a first shot instead! :-/

Good find on the old gr0up0n though :) xx

Don't worry my lovely :-) We're no dance experts and I was sure we'd just looked awkward as. We did no practice other than at a friend's wedding the week before where hubster actually didn't bend his knees at all and his legs were like planks of wood - and he's a lot taller than I am! On the day we literally just swayed about and chatted most of the way through. But having had the trailer for the DVD through yesterday which was made up mainly of the first dance, it actually doesn't look bad! Definitely not the awkward sprawl we thought it was! Don't worry - people are there to see you both together, not judge your dancing skills and give you a score at the end. It's your wedding, not Strictly ;-) xx

Just don't have one if you aren't comfortable, invite everyone on to dance and just do as you would. No need to stick to that tradition if it isn't you. My fiancé and I probably aren't doing one because we're not keen on having everyone watching us sway in the most uncoordinated manner for two minutes :P

I definitly want one as i like the pictures and the emotions/intimacy of the couples on their first dance. itll just be awkward haha. I definitly agree though theres not much traditional about weddings now so its nice people can opt out if they want!!! x
