So we FINALLY go on our honeymoon next week and the plan was always to start trying then. Adam managed to convince me to wait until now to enjoy the all inclusive cocktails instead of TTC straight after the wedding - which I know I'll thank him for next week! I'm so desperate for my own family and have been for a long time.

My only worry now is I've just started a new job - like literally 6 days ago! I'm so fed up of feeling like there's always a delay, but this is the only time I've considered waiting a little longer and it coming just from me instead of somebody giving me a reason or anything like that.

I guess my question is does anybody know how long you've got to be with your employer before you are entitled to mat pay? I've tried looking online but can't seem to decipher from a few different answers. Can anyone help?

At the point baby is due, count back 15 weeks. Then it's at that point you have to have 26 weeks service with your employer. Basically, you need approx 6 months service when you're 5 months pregnant, as an approximate. Get pregnant 2 months after you start your new job and you should be okay.

It's worth checking occupational maternity pay entitlement in your company policy as this may be more generous but they generally will only pay it if you have 1 year service when baby is due.

Some employers very from 6months - 1 year. It will state it in your contract I think.

My first post is the statutory right to SMP. To qualify for occupational maternity pay with may be more generous than SMP,if an employer offers it can require a longer qualifying period.

In my work it is after 2 months you get statutory pay and to get additional pay you have to be here for 2 years, I think a lot of them are different though so it's worth asking or checking your conrtact xx

I kind of don't want to ask work as I feel a bit sly starting a new job then asking about maternity straight away! Feel a bit rude lol.

I think I just have to mention my worry to hubs now and see what he has to say :/

If you have been employed for longer in another job you might be eligible for maternity allowance, which is the same as smp only its paid like a benefit rather than by your employer. When I was pregnant 6 years ago I basically had to work there for 11 months before due date to qualify for smp, which I did as I was worried id be left with no pay.

most places of work you have to be employed for 6 months before you are entitled, so if you get pregnant at say 4 or 5 months worth of service you are not eligible for maternity pay from that company (but you will be entitled to government maternity pay which is a lot less money).
a company also has the right to ask for a letter from the doctor (they would have to pay for this) to prove what your due date is, this is to stop spongers getting a job and then getting pregnant on the 5th month and trying to claim full maternity pay.

my advice would be to wait until you have accumulated 6 months worth of service before you start trying at least you will have less to worry about.
