    Hi ladies,

I have been given a family ring by my H2B ...his great grandmothers diamond, platinum and yellow gold Edwardian ring. It is stunning.

When I went to look at having it resized I have been told it needs resetting, they'd take the ring as part exchange, reset the stone into white gold for just over £300..... I'm a but gutted as I wanted to keep the ring as it was and that seems mega expensive to me.... But then I have no idea...

Does anyone have any experience with having reset stones and the costs associated?

    Thanks!

I didn't think it did ... I asked for it to be resized, but apparently one of the 8 claws holding in the diamond is broken and one is worn. He has said he can resize it and clean it but won't guarantee the work. :-/ it's a heck of a diamond to run that risk with. But it looked fine to me, which is why I'm so surprised at the £300 quote...

£300 is a bit pricey, is he changing the whole setting for that but keeping the shank?

Sounds to me you just need a couple of claws replacing, you can have them retipped if its just worn this will still cost you a bit prob between £150-180 depending on platinum costs.

I agree with everyone go and get a few prices as they will all differ depending on who is doing the work.

    Thanks girls,

He wants to make a new ring completely....which I don't want. The ring is about 110 years old so I accept it needs some love and that it will cost money but it seems a lot considering they are using the platinum and gold it is made of as part exchange...

I'd rather keep the ring and have it resized and mended but he won't do this, he will only resize it and says that's my risk...

I shall have a shop around, thinking of taking h2b to Birmingham for a show in feb so might see if we can go to the jewellery quarter there....

I was just about to recomded the JQ in Birmingham. My engagement ring is really old, was my granny's and it needed resizing and diamond back in. Now mine was quite straight forward but the JQ were brilliant and they actually know what they are doing as speak straight to the jewlerrs so put my mind at ease plus they are more competively priced as know you can just go next door. I think with something as important as an engagement ring and being so old it needs to be done correctly so protected. Defintinly shop around but definitnly try JQ in Birmingham xxx
