I know this has been asked before but all the answers are from several years ago and I imagine prices will have changed by then. Does anybody know how much dress alterations on average are? I have a sweetheart princess gown which will need taking in and up and the bust area will need taking in as well. any idea will be helpful just so i have a ball park figure.

    TIA :) x

Mine cost £60 - that was for altering the straps / taking in and re attaching the lace to the bodice. My bridal shop said Alterations were capped at £150 ... So that was the top price if I needed more work doing. X

Oh thanks Leanne, I hope mine is around that price, I've budgeted quite a bit more so would be a nice bonus for the honeymoon if I didn't need it all for alterations x

Mine was only around £60 but I didn't need much doing. However, some shops do packages but i wouldn't expect alterations to be morw than £200.

I had booked a lady that said £150-250. However, after seeing the prices on here and other bridal forums, I looked around and have another appointment where it will be £60 at the most. Ideal.

I paid about £80 for mine, I had a small amount on the bust and a small amount taking up. She told me it was that much as the taking up part had the lace detailing and that was what bumped the price up

I have just been quoted £65 for a fitting fee as I didn't buy my dress from the shop, £95 to take the bust in and £70 to take a plain tuille hem up. I asked about shortening the straps on my dress and creating sleeves but they couldn't give me a price for that so I dread to think how much that would be! Suffice to say that I am going to be shopping around.

Feel let down by the shop where I bought my dress as they said that they would do all alterations when I bought it, but when I went to try my dress on when it arrived they said that they no longer do alterations. Now struggling to find someone to do the work with only three months to go.

Donna, which alterations shop was it so I can give them a miss. Also didn't you get you dress from miles away or was that the other Lincoln bride? X
  14.

Yes my dress came from Milton Keynes. The shop that I spoke to was J'D35ire in Lincoln, they have just started to do alterations for dresses that were not bought from their shop but it's certainly not cheap. I have spoken to a seamstress in a neighbouring village today and have an appointment to meet her next Monday. Will see how much she quotes me and then decide what to do.

Donna I have a quote from a shop on Stodman Street in Newark maximum £120 for as much as needs doing (mine is taken up, bust and butt taken in) the shop is 'petit Versailles' and its new. Was recommended by my bridal shop

Thanks for that Claire, I will have a look at them.

I had an appointment with a seamstress last Monday and left feeling even more worried. Firstly the place was a little bit mucky which made me dread getting my dress out. The lady was lovely but didn't give me much confidence as she said that I would need some extra lace to make the alterations to the straps but didn't have anything suitable. I said that I would contact the company that made my dress and ask if I could buy a couple of metres of the lace. When I asked what she could do if I couldn't get the lace she said that I might need to buy a new dress! She then went on to say that the alterations would be at least £300. The dress only cost £1000. Starting to feel a bit doomed where this dress is concerned. Told my OH that I was going to put it on 3bay and wear jeans!

Oh my word Donna, I've never heard anything like it! Well try this lady in Newark, 07760875432. I have only spoke to her on the phone as my appointment is not until Sept, but she told me she needs 4 weeks to complete any alterations, so you have time, I am super early.

    Best of luck :-/ x

can i just ask, did any of you bring somebody with you to a dress fitting? i'm not sure if it's the norm or whether the seamstress would be annoyed?

    Thanks

I will have someone at my fitting, the seamstress won't mind, I worked in a bridal shop for my first ever job and brides used to bring other people to fittings as they would ask there opinions.

One part of fittings is the worry and brides need the support. When the dress has been pinned to the alterations needed it can be difficult to imagine the finished product which can scare some brides which is why a reassuring voice is always good to have.

i had my dressed hemmed 2 inches at front and a bustle put it and it was £80, i have three bridesmaids then needed an inch hemming at front and a belt sewed on them and they were £52.50 each so 4 all 4 of them it was £237.50. does this sound about right to everyone as i thought it was quite expensive lol
