I went wedding dress shopping with a couple of friends a few weeks ago, after going to two shops with my Mum, and I think I've found The Dress. I've booked an appointment for a second viewing in a couple of weeks time. My Mum is on holiday so my Sister is coming with me.

I'm now getting a lot of grief off my Sister. She thinks that it's too early to buy it and if I wait until November then if it's definitely the one then it will be cheaper. I've been told by two shops that, taking into account alterations etc, it can take around 6/7 months for the dress to be ready. My Sister seems to think that this is rubbish and they're just trying to sell me a dress. She says that if I want to pay for it then so be it but I'll be making a big mistake. She chose a dress very early on when she got married in 2011. About two months before the wedding she had a wobble and wanted to buy a much more expensive dress and she says that she regrets buying her dress so early.

I don't know what to do now. The dress felt right and I'm 99.99% positive that it's The One, but my Sister has now put doubts in my head. I know it's my choice and she shouldn't be bullying me but is what the two shops told me about 'turnaround time' right or is it too early to buy it? I've been to three shops and tried on around 10 dresses.

I think it varies from shop to shop Iwas told to get my dress at least 9 months before my wedding to allow fittings etc and for it to come in.

The shop ive got my dress from the particular dress takes 12 weeks to come in and then by the time alterations etc happen They'd recommended me to get my dress at least 8 months before.

I have ordered my dress with about 18 months to go. I know its the one for me and Im glad ive got it sorted. If you don't think you will change your mind id go and buy it don't leave it till too near your date as you might not get the dress you want x

No such thing as too early! If you're that sure it's the one then I'd go ahead and buy it now and then not look at any other dresses (just in case). As far as I know the turn around time is correct unless you plan to buy the sample dress in which case you probably will get it cheaper closer to the time, but then again you might not get it at all if someone else asks to buy the sample dress within the next 5 months.

I found mine really early and the lady who owned the shop said she gets loads of brides in coming too late and being disappointed!! I got mine early and she let me pay in installments too!! I guess it's up to you but I didn't want to risk losing the one.

I have found 'the dress' I really love it! The shop said it could take up to 6 months to come in. My mum said it was far to early to buy as she dosnt want to store it for that long (worried about it getting creased or damaged). The shop have got my detailed and written down the dress I want. They said they will contact me if it gets discontinued so
I can go and buy it. I think u should go with your sister any way, once she sees the dress on she may well see what u mean by wanting to get it now. After all it is all fun any way :). X

I ordered mine at the end of February 2013 and it didn't get in the shop until the end of November so it took 9 months! So you are definitely not looking or buying too early! Most shops give a turn around time of 6 to 9 months as the dresses have to be made to order, they aren't just sitting in a warehouse somewhere waiting to be shipped and the more detailed the dress is the longest it takes to make, and then you have to allow time for alterations when it comes too. I would say ignore your sister, it may be that she is a bit jealous that you will be getting the dress that you really want and she couldn't have that for hers xxx

i had to get my dress early (bought it Sept last year) because we are out of the country for a year...its been 7 months and its only just come in...so no, i don't think its too early...

i will say though that i have had several moments where I have panicked and thought - ugh i don't know if i made the right decision! which is weird cos I am not usually like that, i am always very decisive and sure of things...maybe cos i got mine super early and I can't just go and see it?! go and try it with your sister and see if you still feel the same if you do then go for it! everyone is different, your sister is just looking out for you but that doesn't mean shes right! xx

I went in July (I get married this June) and saw THE DRESS, and it was on sale and I bought it there and then. If I had found one which needed to be made for me, I would also have bought it there and then and happily waited for it to be made. It is NEVER too early doll, in fact with 12 months to go, it is definitely the right time to be looking, and if you have found THE DRESS then it was meant to be! Your dress may not be any cheaper come November, like I said, my dress was in a sale in July! They have sales numerous times a year and it is usually just for dresses which are stock and need to go. It is worth askng your bridal shop if they will give you a discount on your dress if you get your veil and tiara or accessories with it? I got my dress on sale, but got my veil and tiara with it with about £60 off!

It's never too early if you know it's the one! And they're not talking rubbish when they say 6/7 months - the designers don't just have a load of ready made dresses, they're usually made to order.

It says you get married in 12 months so I guess November would give you time still but what if it's not available then? It will only ever be cheaper if you buy the sample dress - if the shop can still order it they're not gonna sell it any cheaper are they? Which is fine if you're happy with the sample dress

I've got 15 months and ordered my dress 8 months ago, if its the one then get it, won't make any difference in january unless you want to wait till april when the new spring dresses come in and the old ones get sold cheap as samples but if its a popular dress, likleyhood is the shop won't sell it on yet anyway. it does take between 4/9 months dependant on the designer etc for the dresses to be made brand new. which if you want you have to wait unless you don't mind a 2nd hand or sample dress, which are alot cheaper and they have only been worn minimal amount and are normaly throughly cleaned before sale.

I think as well it depends on the designer of the dress to the time scale. I ordered my Maggie Sotterro in the October, I got told 6 months. It did not arrive until the end of May, beginning of June, so I'd defo not wait until November unless you know you can buy off the peg, but why run the risk of not being able to.

If you are 100% sure it's THE dress then go ahead and order it. I was a bit disorganised, didn't order my dress until the beginning of November, and am getting married end of June. The dress won't be in until the end of this month (April) but that's ok for me as I'm still loosing weigh so won't go for my first fitting until the end of May.
    Good luck!! xx

I bought mine last September about a month after we'd got engaged, and don't get married until October this year! Was totally by accident, just started looking for ideas online and absolutely fell in love with one and had to get it. Can't wait to wear it, makes me so happy everytime I go visit it at my sisters house haha had to get it out of my house so I wouldn't be tempted to keep putting it on!!

You know its the right dress if you put it on the second time and still love it like you did the first time. If you wait then that dress might not be available. Can you order and just pay minimum deposit? Spend a whole day visiting shops and trying on dresses and then go back to that first one. If it is still exactly what you want no doubts then just buy it!
I look forward to putting my dress on at every fitting!

If you love it then order it. I went looking for dresses really early on and wasn't planning on ordering for ages but then I found one I loved and I just knew I wanted that one. I was like you and I ummed and ahhed for a couple of months but when I went back to try it on I still loved it just as much. So I ordered with about 18 months to go. It took 6 months to arrive (so they're telling the truth about how long it can take!) so I ended up having my dress with a year to go! I've never regretted it x

if is the one then buy it. mine took a full 7 months to arrive and its just not worth stressing yourself over it not coming in time. go back and try it on again and if you love it then order it and dont listen to your sister. then when you order it stop looking at dresses! simple and you wont find another one that you think you like more. take lots of pics when you try it on and then you can look back on them if you have any doubts x

12 months to the wedding is definitely a good time to decide, and dresses can take 6months+ to make and arrive in store???they're not just making your dress ... Also your dress may not go down in price, so then you would be gutted, I think you should definitely go for it if you love it so much x

Not to early at all if you know it's the one, once you put the deposit down stop looking for other dresses at to not regret your choice. I ordered mine over twelve months in advance and even then I had numerous dress fortis and that wasn't even enough before the big day as I kept loosing weight! Also it will give you a chance to choose other bits that will go with your dress eg, tiara, veil etc xx

Clair the bossy Sister is actually a year and a half younger than me! And the way she's behaved is exactly the reason that me and my Mum decided she was the wrong person to take dress shopping!

I want to get it sorted now because I like to be organised and I'm trying to lose weight. I just want to make sure it's ready in plenty of time if any alterations etc need doing at the last minute.

I wouldnt worry, the turnover can be anything from 6 months to a year. I have just ordered my bridesmaids dresses last week and they take 5 months just for those so will be ready for September.

Also, if youre trying to lose weight i would still order your current size as its much easier to take it a few sizes down than it is to make bigger if you dont lose enough for a smaller dress x

I had a chat with a friend yesterday and we decided it would be best to change the date. I was getting quite stressed out about it and we didn't want to end up with a fall out in the shop! That way my friend can come with me (and hopefully my Mum), and I've told my Sister she's welcome to come if she's free. At least that way I'll have some moral support if my Sister does decide to go into bossy mode!

I went back to the wedding dress shop for a re-try of my favourite dress and have chosen a completely different one! It's more expensive than the original but it's more 'me'. Much as I hate to admit it, I think my Sister was right. Dress, veil and straps will cost around £1400 but I got a 10% discount on the veil.
