I have been wondering about this for a while and just read similar comment from Melvis so thought I would ask. I have a platinum engagement ring so does that mean my wedding band should be the same? I am concerned if they are different metals rubbing together one would wear against the other. Anyone got an idea? Thanks
CommentAuthorsbride
I have always been told they should be the same metal
I am now Mrs Stacey Stiles and loving it!
CommentAuthorMel D
They should be the same metal, or very close. If your engagement ring is platinum I would deffo get a platinum wedding ring. I have an 18ct gold engagement ring, and my wedding ring is 14ct, which should just about be ok. However if you have 9ct and 18ct next to each other they will definitley rub and one will wear - but can't remember which, I would guess the 18ct as it is a softer metal. The best thing to do is to ask the jeweller, they will be able to advise you better.

ah thanks...was thinking about palladium because of the price difference to platinum so will need to drastically review the budget now!!!
CommentAuthorricky
The higher the carat the softer the metal because there is more gold in them. if they are too far apart one will wear the other one away.
i have a white gold engagemnt ring but wanted platinum wedding rings, would that not be a good idea? x
CommentAuthorMel D
Apparently palladium and platinum are from the same family and will be ok together, but definitly don't get a white gold wedding ring as it's too soft and you'd need to constantly get it replated.

I've got a platinum and white gole engagement ring and my wedding ring will be palladium as its meant to look great, very close to platinum and white gold but alot stronger and less likely to tarnish.

you cant have one platinum and not the other or it will wear one away very easily. Ideally you need the colours to match up anyways. Might look off having two diff metals on same finger. We were advised to NEVER mix the metals by our jewellers but apparently so many ppl do it but and wonder why they have to go back the jewellers and pay money to fix it. Speak with a reputable jeweller before anyone makes a decision about this.

When we got our wedding rings from Smooch we were told that it was fine for me to have a palladium wedding band next to my 18k white gold engagement ring......and i know my mum has two different carats and metals next to each other and after 30 odd years they are still fine.
Its a tricky one this one as some say don't and others say its fine.
Happy to be Mrs Holt, love my husband and love the memories
of our wedding day
CommentAuthorFaeth
Just to throw this out there, my Mum had an engagement ring that was a lower carat than her wedding ring (I think the engagement ring was 9ct and her wedding ring 18ct).
The one that wore away to really thin was actually the engagement ring (not what you'd first think) - jeweller at the time said he thought it was because the softer gold more easily got grit embedded in it, which wore away at the harder ring.
But either way, I think it's advisable to get them of a similar "hardness", whatever you plan.
"Of course I'm not wedding obsessed!!"
CommentAuthorVicky
I have always believed that to be the case - My mum has a white gold and a gold and patimum enternity ring she never takes them off and has worn them for 27 years - they havent seemed to rub but they are all 18carat I dont know if that makes a difference??

Thanks everyone. Is a hard one as so much conflicting advice out there. It just concerns me when they say have platinum that they are saying it to get more money out of us!
CommentAuthorUnknown
i was told to get the same so they dont wear away! both of mine are 18 ct white gold! i did want platinum but just too expensive! xx
CommentAuthorsam73
i would say paladium work be ok with it as it is from the same family but do check!

yes smooch told me the same ideally you want the same but can have different metals he said they will wear eventually but it will take a good 30 years or so x palladium should look ok with you platinum ring i think x
CommentAuthorxxRosiexx
Scientific wise I would say get the same metals or carat, especially with gold. They may last 3yrs or 30yrs without wearing each other away but it's better to be safe than sorry, and they will wear each other away at some point. I would double check with the jeweler about platinum /palladium etc though.

Hello everyone.
This question comes up about once a month and there's always lots of confusion. There is a myth that 9 carat rings are harder than 18 carat rings etc but we make over 6000 rings a year AND we've discussed this with the UKs foremost experts (The Assay Office) and (drum roll).....
I CAN ASSURE YOU IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO HAVE THE SAME METAL
Here's the explaination..
Although different 'carats' are different hardnesses when they are in BULLION form, this changes when the metal is 'worked' to become a ring. There is no way to tell with an individual ring if it will be harder or softer, as mentioned by MelN.
However the real myth is that the 'hard' one will wear the 'softer' one. The truth is that ANY two rings next to each other will 'wear' but it really does take decades and even then it will be very small amounts of wear. It doesn't matter if they are the same or different.
To summarise - you really don't need to worry about mixing different carats of gold or putting Palladium and Platinum rings together. Its more about what fits your budget!
Hope that helps!

thanks smooch!!
my engagement ring is 14k white gold, which i never really see a lot of in highstreet shops.
what are your views on this??
i was worried that h2b was scammed because i hadn't heard of it before, but it really is 14k and not gold plated (phew!!)
the diamonds i have on my ring aren't high quality, but you can only see the flaws if you look very, VERY closely. it meant he could afford to get more of them lol do i need to be worried about them being of lower quality, or is it a personal thing??

Hi Kisywisy
14k white gold is VERY popular in America and some other countries - there's nothing wrong with it at all. Its basically halfway between 18K and 9K in terms of gold content.
It will work with 9K or 18K as mentioned above but we (and some other UK jewellers) can make 14K rings so it shouldn't be a problem if you want to stick with it.
Don't worry about the flaws in your diamonds - almost every diamond has flaws unless you pay A LOT of money. As you say there aren't usually visible unless you look really close.

Thank you so much Smooch for clearing this up - very kind.
What about 18 ct white gold and titanium?

CommentAuthorsmooch
LittleMissBossy
Now that one is potentially more difficult (White Gold & Titanium)
Its still difficult to be 100% sure because even though its very tough and harder to deform,Titanium will still scratch, just like all of the precious jewellery metals.
We don't have any experience that I know of, of putting these two metals together, but we think it would still be decades before any noticeable wear became visible.
Sorry I can't be any clearer. Hope that helps!
CommentAuthorLittleMissBossy
It does help, thank you very much. I just can't afford another white gold ring.... And if they wear can rings be repaired? I think my e-ring has a life long guarantee.

I've had mine over two years and it's immaculate. Hardly scratched. But I do only wear them when I leave the house and take them off as soon as I'm home.

That's good then! I was wearing mine at work all the time & it just ruined the bottom so when I got it re-dipped I decided to not wear it for work which means I rarely wear it just when I remember lol as to why I will just not bother all together once married & my mum never wore hers! x

*********** - I've got a palladium engagement ring but have found a perfect matching wedding ring in 10K white gold. Would these two metals be ok together? Xx
CommentAuthorGabyS
this is something I've never given a thought too.. i really didn't think it would matter x
CommentAuthorsmooch
Hi Eco-Freak
It should be okay BUT....
It would be better to try and get the wedding ring in Palladium too. Palladium never needs to be replated with Rhodium but 10K gold will need it regularly - maybe as often as eveyr 4 - 6 months.
Where have you seen the ring? 10K is not normally sold in the UK but is very common in the USA.
However in the USA jewellers can stamp their own rings so there is some misleading stuff out there. In the UK all jewellers have to have their gold checked by the Assay Office who stamp the rings so you know you're getting the real thing.
If you see a ring on a US website or in a US store and it looks very cheap you should be very cautious. If something looks like a massive bargain it can mean its not genuine. Most sites and stores are okay but you need to be careful.
Hope that helps

I have a question - I don't even know if I'm supposed to post it here - I'm new! I have 18kt yellow gold engagement and wedding ring, but a 9kt gold half diamond eternity ring. I'm not bothered about the wearing part - but the colours are slightly different - does anyone know if it is possible to get the eternity ring dipped to be 18kt gold instead of 9? If so where do I go?! Thanks in advance and apologies if this is the wrong place to post this! x
CommentAuthorsmooch
Hi KirstieW41
You could get your eternity ring dipped with 18ct gold - but there's no guarantee it would be the same as the engagement ring after that. Gold is a natural substance and each type of gold has other metals mixed in it - but even two rings in 18ct gold could have slightly different colours because the other metals can vary.
Over time the colours will become closer as the rings pick up some wear.
The only way to make them look identical would be to have them BOTH plated at the samme time. However as with any 'dipping' or 'plating' process you'd probably have to have this done evry year or so.
Hope that helps

I know this is an old thread but I'm hoping someone can help me! I got engaged in July so 6 months ago and my 9k white gold engagement ring is already yellowing. I suppose all the handwashing (thanks covid) isn't helping but it started on the underside and is now all over my beautiful ring and it's genuinely upsetting me (silly I know). I wanted to get a platinum wedding ring as then I would only be paying to get one ring replated every 6 months rather than 2 but now I don't know what to do. Is that a terrible idea?
