Hi all, just wondering how many of you actually had an engagement party, they seem to be a dying trend, we didn't have one, we just went out for several celebratory meals with family and friends.

my dad keeps asking us what we want as engagement present- we've told him that we don't want anything but he says it's the law- any ideas what we can ask for, to make it worse he hasn't said a value and I don't want to ask him as its a bit rude - especially as we dont want anything - I keep hoping he's forgotten but every do often Hess text asking if we've thought of anything yet lol-

We didn't have a party as we got engaged abroad. My Dad did ask if we wanted the function room at the rugby club he is memeber of but we just didn't feel the need to be honest.

As for a present - if you really can't think of anything could you ask for money towards wedding/honeymoon?
Or a voucher for somewhere like ik3a/@rg0s/bnq

We didn't have one, didn't need the expense.
Instead there were numerous celebratory, meals and drinks with different friends and family.

Aww that's fab Sarah - it's a bit of a silly reason why we decided against one really- or best friends got engaged a few years ago, they had a party and literally within 2 months they split up- we didn't want to jinx ourselves- plus I'm not keen on a big fuss and being the center of attention so various meals were perfect for us :-)

Yeah my dad is odd in that he doesn't like giving money as a present or vouchers he likes to buy a proper present and spends she's wrapping and making it look pretty, sometimes too pretty to,open- it's hard not knowing a price, I've set my sister on the case to subtly ask him!

We didn't and to be honest, it never crossed my mind too..... We didn't go out for meals or drinks with family/friends. I think it was because we had only been together 4 months when OH proposed and people perhaps questioned if it would last.... I guess you can kind of understand that really. Stronger than ever we are xxxx

No we didn't have a party. OHs parents bought us a beautiful pair of champagne flutes as an engagement present with a design that kind of matches my engagement ring. They are beautiful but to be honest we have never used them and they are still in the box to keep safe. We don't really drink champagne and wine on special offer for a fiver doesn't feel right to drink out of a flute. Plus I'd be so scared of breaking them! When we have a bigger house, we will probably out them on display in a cabinet but we don't have room in our flat right now, especially with the heap of wedding stuff thats growing day by day.
But perhaps you could suggest a nice keepsake like that and then that leaves it up to him how much he wants to spend. X

We didn't. We went for dinner with my parents, my sister and BIL. His family is 300 miles away so it's hard enough getting them in one place for the wedding let alone anything else.
My mums the same as your dad Michelle, hates giving money or vouchers. And her wrapping is amazing, I'm always a bit sad to ruin it by opening the present.

We didn't do anything for ours but we were in Egypt when he proposed and then my little sister had made us an engagement cake for when we got home .. It was so clever! It was a standard sponge cake with a multicoloured heart through the middle of it .. She did tell me how she did it but I've forgotten already .. Looked very good anyhow :)

Not many people seem to have parties now .. I know an old school friend did though :)

We didn't have one, MIL told OH she would throw us one when he told her he was going to propose but we got engaged on Christmas day so it was kind of included in Christmas celebrations. Me and OH don't drink so didn't really want a party, plus I don't think I would have liked being the centre of attention, the wedding will be bad enough haha!

No party for us either, or anything for that matter! We got engaged in Tunisia and the we visited family when we got back to share our news but we didn't have any kind of 'celebration' as such. Don't even think we got to enjoy a glass of champagne lol

We didn't have one, but we got married on Xmas eve, I had 12 members of the family around the next day for xmas lunch (which I cooked) so we had a bit of a celebration then. I have only been to a couple of engagement parties in the past and unfortunately I have gotten the impression that these were held in order to get gifts rather than just to celebrate the promise of a marriage, I'm sure that is not the case with the majority of engagement parties I just have greedy friends lol

We considered it, but we got engaged at the end of October and were straight in to planning for a big Christmas project that happens in Cardiff every December, so there realistically wasn't time to have a party before January. We felt January was too long after we got engaged to have a party, so we didn't bother. We got quite a few cards, but not many engagement presents. No one asked us what we wanted, so what we did get were things that the people giving had decided were appropriate. One of them I remember was a photo frame. Maybe you could ask for something like that. Just a frame if you don't want to ask for too much, and then get a friend or family member who is good with a camera to take a photo to celebrate your engagement. Or if you think that he might want to give you more than a photo frame ask if he will pay for you to have a professional portrait photo taken of the two of you.

You could suggest to your Dad to get you a gift for your wedding day and put the money he wants to spend on you for your engagement present on that?

Yeah dads said that he will already pay towards wedding- again not sure how much- don't really want him too but he said that's the job of a dad to pay for his princess on her special day! He's very tradition and sweet like that but not traditional in taste- was thinking of asking for something like a tumble dryer- practical but something we've been thinking of buying for a while

That's really lovely that he wants to buy you a present. It was always traditional to buy the engaged couple items for their new home when they get married, but most people live together already these days, there's not the need for those kinds of gifts.

I did want to plan some sort of get together with both families but didn't get round to it as we became engaged with a few months of my mum's funeral, so it was a bit of a tough time overall. After that it seemed too much time had passed to have a proper party, but it's my 30th birthday early next year so plan to have a bit of a do with both my family and OH's family too x

Yes, we had a lovely meal with about 20 of our closest friends and family, then afterwards we had hired out the top floor of a really nice bar and I'd spent some of the day decorating it, and when we got there, the owners had put out loads of little candles and fairy lights so it looked gorgeous! We had photos up of my partner and I from our years of being together and hundreds of white balloons! We had a great time, then my mum took our daughter home with her and whoever wanted to venture into town afterwards did! I wish I hadn't got as drunk as I did tbf, as some of the photos by the end were of us looking a little bit messy haha!
Present wise, we were lucky enough to have been gifted some beautiful things, such as an 'Engagement party' photo album, Debenhams vouchers, Loadddss of champagne, a couple of bedside lamps of our choice, a wedding countdown plaque, and some other bits and bobs. We spent the vouchers on a Gorgeous duvet/bed set and some cut crystal wine glasses, which we only use for company or special occassions, but they're both so special to us, knowing that they were from our Engagement!
Maybe find something like that to suggest? Or say that you like anything from the Wedding section at a certain shop and let him pick what is within his budget? You can say you don't want something until you're blue in the face, but if someone wants to get you something, they will!
Oh btw, just thought of something that you could get, as I asked my mum to get me one! If you go on 'ET$¥' there are these cute little stamps that they can custom make with your names and address, so you can stamp the back of any envelopes that you ever send out to people, including on your STD's and Invites and thank you notes etc! X
