Wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on changing your name to suit OH.

I have 2 sides to my views
1 - I love my name, it’s my identity. And the thought of changing it frightens me. I know I will never loose who I am but feel in a way that I will be stepping back from it a little and not shouting about it. I asked OH his views on changing his to mine or double barrelling (I don’t really like double barrelling anyway) but he won’t take my name.

2 – I won’t feel married if we don’t share a name. I want to be a family. All of us together and the same. It wouldn’t feel right if him and our kids were all Price then I was Vincent. Would feel like I wasn’t included in the family 100%.

I will be changing my name. I just have moments where I question it.
My mom and aunt don’t help. They both regret changing their name. Aunt divorced so had to change everything back. Mom still married. But both say if they got married now then there’s no way that they would change it

So just wondering what your thoughts were?

One of the biggest reasons we are getting married (aside from the fact that we love each other and we want to spend our lives together) is because we want to show the world that we are a family in every way including name (this may seem a bit silly in this day and age but I have had a very unconventional upbringing so this is important to me) so I can't wait to have the same name as my man and our little girl. Saying that tho I don't think a name is as important these days so if you don't want to change your name it won't be frowned upon like it once was. It has to be your choice what you do tho as you have to live with it for the rest of your life :)

I've always known that regardless of who I married and what their last name was, I would always take their name. I can't wait to get rid of my surname and take OH's.. I've never liked my name and feel no connection to it. That's one tradition that I really believe in sticking by. Plus when we have children I'd want to have the same surname as them :) xx

i guess that's the difference. most friends call me by my last name - Vinnie. and i am really quite proud of it. no reason why in particular. no-one in my family has ever done anything fantastic. I just feel really connected to it

I love my surname as it is but he loves the idea of me taking his name. I'd also love to match our children as the three of them are Carr's and I'm Murray it doesnt feel great.
Its a toughie do what makes you happy, I think I'm going to be Carr but I'm going to mourn my surname, maybe with ice cream cake and a bottle of wine. lol x

I have no problem changing my surname, My surname is a very common one just like my mums one was and she took on another common name. I like My new surname Deaton as I have never heard of it before and very uncommon and different and unique and I cannot wait to have my surname to match my fiancé and our son when he arrived we will be a proper little family same name and all and I will feel 100% family too
My hubby would be offended if I didn't take on his surname!! I'm sure I will always be a smith at heart and my birth certificate won't change so I will be 100% Smith 100% Deaton best of both worlds as we are being both family's together to become one family as we are joining in matrimony to become one soul two bodies Xxx

Emily you will always be a Vincent at heart am its in tour blood you will just become 100% Price and 100% Vincent =D

I will be taking my OH's name though I've never questioned taking it I will be slightly sad as my dad is the only brother and has myself and my sister so our surname may die out of our family. We have decided to use my grandad's dads name, grandad's name and dads middle name in our sons name (when we have children and if it's a boy) haha to carry on a tradition that way.

I always said I'd never change my name.

I'm the end of the line in our family. There are no boys in our generation. I only have a true sister (my brother is in fact my step brother so he has a different surname anyway).
All my cousins on dads side are girls. I'm the youngest.

Our surname stops with me!!!!! Frightening really when you consider it's an ancient family line that can be traced back centuries to the dark ages. We have our own rune!!!!

But....... As soon as Chris asked me to marry him I knew I'd take his name. And as sad as I am to see my family name disappear, I'm honoured to take his name. Must be the old traditionalist in me.

Can't wait to change my last name! My H2B said he would be ok if I didn't want to change to his name but I told him that I wanted too. He was very happy about that. Every since I was little I wanted to get rid of my Surname even if it meant by deed poll. Never ever got round to it though! Soon as I am able after I am married I will be going through that list to get my name changed on all my documents pretty quickly. My H2B has a fairly unusual surname (From the Basque Country) so with my English name and his Basque surname I will be pretty unique! :)

For me personally it's a no brainer. My name will change from Laughton to Stewart, I don't like double-barreled names (working in a contact centre I have actually had a customer who had a double-barreled FIRST and LAST name... why? Just why? and I do not plan on keeping my maiden name as a middle name either. My Dad is adopted so and we have never been close and our relationship went caput 6 years ago so I don't feel any real intense connection to keep my name. Not to mention I am a bit tired of trying to spell it to people over the phone.

I want to change my surname. However I am brazilian, and here we have two surnames (one from the mother and other from the father). And I wanto to remove BOTH, but my parents hate the idea, like if this would exclude them from my life. I'm still not sure, but I do want to change. Remove both surnames and take his. :)
