Just wondering your thoughts on Canapés, OH doesn't want us to have them as they are adding a lot of extra money to the wedding budget. Short bread is provided at the drinks reception by the hotel. We are getting married at 1pm, having drinks reception from 2-4 and dinner is at 4.30pm, is that not a long time for people to wait for food? x

Nope. On a normal day you would have lunch before 1 and dinner at 6/7pm so not too long at all.

I was thinking about them, but our ceremony was at 3pm and we were sitting down to food at6, I thought people would eat before coming to the wedding, and it saved a fair few hundred by not having them

Do you think people expect canapés though? x

GF our venue is asking about £1500 for canapés, which is why OH is dead set on not having it. x
People expect too much from wedding nowadays, they've been invited to someone special day, they get a free meal, some free drinks, yet they expect more,
If people coming to your wedding eat late breakfast, I'm sure they can keep going until 430pm, it not your responsibility to ensure they are sensible enough to eat before hand,

That's a lot of money, off hand I cannot recall how much they were now, but it was per person and whether you had 3, 4, or 5 for each person.

Our canapes are part of the package, but we went for the medium package, which worked out at an extra £10pp from the basic one and included canapes, but I wouldn't pay an extra £1500 for them and if the hotel is providing shortbread I wouldn't bother as also doesn't sound as though they have very long anyway to wait for food.

Yeah this is similar GF. I agreed with OH about not having them until a friend of ours said she was at a wedding recently that didn't have canapés and everyone was bored and hungry. I don't want my guests to feel that way lol. x

Canapés are hardly going to take away boredom, five mouthfuls of food! There goes five minutes of their time. That's ridiculous, our guests all mingled, had drinks etc and spoke to each other.

We are having a harp playing and a caricaturist at the drinks reception, plus winter cocktails and the short bread, so hopefully they will be ok. Thanks for helping put my mind at ease girls. x

Wow that's a lot of money for canapes!!
Our venue is only about £6 pp!
We're hoping they will do mini fish and chip cones but that's more based on the fact our ceremony is 12.30 so people will probably miss their lunch and would then have to wait until about 4pm until the wedding breakfast
CommentAuthorInDreamland
We had them and they were much appreciated by everyone including myself as I was so hungry. However they were included in our package so didn't cost anything extra. They're not expected so if you can't afford them don't have them. Personally I think £1500 is steep for canapés, that's a full evening buffet!

£1500 sound a lot- it's a nice thing to have sometimes, especially if there is a few hours to wait around, we went to a friends wedding in June that was at 1pm and by the time we sat down to eat starters it was 6.30pm, with a flowing free bar it was a savior to have canapés to soak up the alcohol- lol,
CommentAuthorBecci93
Comfort food :p and hopefully most people will like them .. I have family coming from New Zealand so it'll give them the full English experience with a chicken dinner for weddjng breakfast and bbq for evening reception!

We were thinking possibly about having canapes but looking at the costs I dont think we're gonna bother. Guests sit down at 4pm for the meal and the ceremonys at 2 so im guessing most people will eat lunch (bar me who'll be to nervous to eat anything!) Xx
CommentAuthorFlossie
I don't think we're going to have canapes.. for me it's just an unnecessary added cost. Everyone is grown up enough to know they will need to eat before they leave, and if they end up ravenous then hopefully they will just enjoy the wedding breakfast even more :)

Maybe just get some bowls of crisps, nuts and bread sticks put out then, should be very cheap if he really wants to have some nibbles.

I wouldn't bother Leanne. Most people realise they won't be eating til later and make sure they eat something to keep them going before they go

Leanne, I'm very much with your oh here, yep they should sort themselves out before going. Weddings cost a fortune as they are without having to feed people just because they are not capable of feeding themselves before going somewhere

All of my family from abroad went against my mums advice to eat plenty for brunch and warned them there would be no proper meal until 5pm, they didn't listen then gave my BIL a hard time because they wanted to stop for food just before the ceremony which he refused because otherwise they'd be late to the church.
At the reception venue they worked out where the canapés were being brought out of and basically stood there and practically ate most of the canapés so a lot of our other guests didn't get a look in (so embarrassing and rude). Some guests just don't think.

That would have been my concern as well with people taking more than they should when it is done on each person

We served cake at the church after the service. It was a much cheaper option than getting canapés in. We provided some cakes and put out a request for guests who liked baking to bring one along, and quite a few people did.

That's a great idea elinor- I think we will have canapés as I know my friends drink way too much so don't want then drunk before the meal lol

The hotel do serve short bread so I think we will prob leave it at that. I looked into macaroons and they are £250 why is everything so expensive once you mention wedding lol

Macaroons ate expensive even when it isn't a wedding. Cheapest thing is Definitely crisps nuts and breadsticks.

We are having canapés but for 110 guests it's £375
£1500 is rather steep.....
I like the idea as its a little bit of something to kill time and I think guests appreciate them. I know we did at the last wedding we went too.

Lol- do be honest cocktail and canapés are getting more popular but it's such a Americanism! People shouldn't expect it and should prepare themselves for long periods without food! Lol
CommentAuthorInDreamland
They are appreciated by guests but ultimately I do think it's only if you can afford it, or just put out affordable snacks in bowls rather than have staff walking around with silver trays.

I am having canapes at £2.50 a head i will also ask the venue to put crisps and dips out around the bar area just to nibble on until the meal. £1500 is expensive for that you would be wanting only the best items prepared by the best chefs but even so alot of money if you cant afford it xx
CommentAuthorStephH96
£1500 seems a lot for some snacks. You do seem to have a short time between ceremony and sit down meal so no bother for people to do without. On the other hand I've never been to wedding without them, so I don't think it's unfair that people might expect them. If it was me and there was no negotiation on price then id just do my own or do dips and crisps as suggested by others.
CommentAuthorStephH96
Forgot to say that it's actually a good distraction as well for guests whilst the photos etc are being done at the reception.
CommentAuthorFutureMrsW
I don't think canapes are expected, I've been to a few weddings the past few years and only one had canapes, there's no need to feel you should provide them - especially when the venue is charging so much!
I would really like to have canapes myself as I think it adds a certain touch of elegance, but they are so expensive it is very difficult to justify the additional cost, and with 120 day guests approx. even the best deals wind up pricey.
CommentAuthorLeanneR0186
Our venue does not allow any food or drink on the premises that is not supplied by them, so whatever we have, they will be charging us for it lol x

I've never been to a wedding where they have canapés. Usually just shortbread but been to a couple where they had scones with jam & cream
