Martay theres several things you could do we never used to do silks really unless asked for thme so you can either

    * ask florist if they have or can get a new supplier/still get silks ( if they are a good florist considering theyve had 12 months notice they should be able to fulfil order for you themselves!)

    * find a local supplier yourself such as craft of hobby ( swap the craft and hobby round!) They have a good selection) or garden centre some do silks

    * the bay of e if all else fails!

    * or as a alternative/ suprise have the basket made in fresh flowers BUT get her a identical basket made in silks as a suprise keep sake for her :)

    * failing the above the florist HAVE had adequate amount of time to sort out the silks for you so id be asking
1 - WHY have you not told me sooner
2 - you have had enough time to sort it and make alternative arrangements supplier/silks wise
3 - if i get it in fresh can you do me a discount on a silk one also
4- if 3 doesnt work ask for a discount as your disopointed in lack of there organisation and making alternative arrangements/suppliers for their silks
But main thing is LOADS of places can do/sell you silks hun :) so dont worry! If i can help any more let me know :) i dont mind giving FREE advice for anyone!!

If the florist won't do them for you I know someone who will and then it just means the florist can't charge you for what you are not having.

    'sk8rpunkbarbie'.......update.

ive have just spoke to florist and put your points to her. i dont think she had any intentions of sourcing another supplier and just repeated her supplier doesnt do silk anymore. when i put the point across that shes had ample time to let me know she apologised and back peddled slightly and was then prepared to see if she could find someone else. i reiterated that i made a promise to my 8 yr old she could have silk, and also im in a contract with her and not her supplier. i then put it too her if i buy artificial flowers would she be willing to put bouquet together to match others and she agreed to do so, albeit a slight! charge for lace and binding. i think under the circumstances shes a bit cheeky to ask for payment to do this, but as im in a contract with deposit paid, i cant really afford to back out now. so i suppose its the best of a bad job.

i really appreciate your help and advice.

    thank you so much

    Your welcome kye

Suzky several questions and the answers will give me a rough idea of why price so high

*what type of roses? Ie columbian, avalance, waterfall etc
    * what time of year you getting married? Valentines mothers day and x mas most expensive roses can be up to 4 pounds each minimum this time of year
    * are the roses being specially imported?
    * how many roses are going to be in the bq?
    * what type of foiliage? Is its gyp/babys breath that can be 1.20 a stem depending salal is NOT worth the money in brides bqs, bear grass is pricey as well

If you can confirm that info then i can give you an idea if thats a good price :) the prices i gave are average but obviously the more extravagant the boquet the more expensive it will be :)

avalance rose, aug, they didnt give a number but its a shower so I presume these are double the price of a posy? didnt say foliage exactly. I knew mine would be pricy but surprised at cost of bms as they are posies made of the same roses but with berries in

Avalanch can vary in price from 2.50 to 4 pound per rose so they are pricey to begin with and shwer bqs are a little more then hand tied averaging from 100 to 150 so if you have say 30 roses in a shower at 3 pounds each thats 90 pounds for flowers alone not taking into account foiliage and labour costs and other costs such as ribbon atc or whatever they are using to put bq together

since ur on here, i do have a Q. we are now considering moving colour scheme from ivory with accents of red and black to pink, red and yellow. How would you arrange the roses and the chair covers etc as that is the only thing causing us confusion and making us keep with the initial plan. Just thought this would be more summery,

    hi sk8rpunkbarbie,
went for a mini consultation with my florist and have decided on a small cascading bouquet with ivory roses, cala lillies, oriental lillies, some folliage and blue diamontes
3 wrist corsages for adult BMs, 2 wrist corsages for FGs, 3 ivory rose button holes and 1 cala lilly button hole all on magnets, and possibly 2 corsages for the mothers (ivory roses i think) also on magnets.

waiting for the quote from her, but how much would you reckon this should cost about - are all of these flowers available in October?

    thanks :)

"Avalanch can vary in price from 2.50 to 4 pound per rose so they are pricey to begin with"

I'm a little confused, are avalanche roses really that expensive or is that just what florists charge?

I've been looking at wholesalers and they're mostly between 37p and 85p with a couple going up to £2.21 (for a 100cm stem and super quality) per stem at the moment in one! A friend's mum (who is an award-winning flower arranger) has offered to do ours all for little more than wholesale as we were getting a lot of quotes that we weren't happy with (£75 for a simple posy, no thanks!).

yeah special florists can rip you off... mil2b has started a course with the horticultural college and the woman there made an arrangement for a 50th golden anniversary which she could charge 40 quid for... cost her six... its appauling. However, they argue back and say its the time... yes 2 and half hours work on my bouquet is costing me 150... a nice little earner.

As title says specias tial sundae this is AVERAGE price it also depends a lot on a) where in country florist is b) if florits has the flowers imported from holland as we did and c) the quality of the roses

Also bare in mind i am a ex florist i havnt worked in florist for 6 yrs ( well i occasionally help out during busy times) but the prices are pretty much the same as back then

I agree suzky i mean yes you have to pay wages 5.85 an hour depending on age so say 25 wage for 3 hours, them there materials such as ribbon, wire etc and then the flowers them selves so it soon adds up! Ive offered several times local girls to me who want flowers doing ill happily do them and only charge mileage for petrol costs and cups of tea! And id go to supermarket with them ( supermarkets are some of best places to go on budget) obviously flowers and supplies would be at their cost but im more then happy to do the flowers :)

Suzky remind me which flowers you need boquet wise ect ie list of floral items!

Your bq if its reds i think persoanlly a head to head red rose ( maybe columbian if not to pricey) hand tied bq with sporadically ( love that wword!)placed diamantee headed pins in the bq itself. With white/ivory voile band covering the point where bq is tied again fastened with diamontee pins. As for foiliage id suggest either : bear grass tips sprayed gold or silver, palm leaves,or banana leaves :)

Ill google a pic for you and post it asap :)

I understand that there are additional costs for florists, but it's just amazing how inflated the prices are for some of them. I made enquiries about a very simple display that I priced up at a maximum £5 wholesale and that I know I could do in about 15 minutes if my mother would allow me to do the flowers (as I've done similar before), and was quoted £35 for each display (if I provided the vases, £45 if I didn't).

Could you give me an idea of what mine should cost please? I'm seriously considering doing them myself because they're so simple! I'd like a gerbera hand-tied bouquet with a little bear grass for myself using probably 13 ish stems, then the same for the bridesmaids (x4) with about 9 stems, and a posy for the flower girl of probably 5 stems. I was quoted £95 by one lady for mine and £35 each for bridesmaids - I nearly fell over!!!!
I've spoken to a florist and she said that they usually sell the smaller gerberas on for about 70p each, so I've worked out that for the whole lot, including simple hand-tied arrangements for the centrepieces I could buy the flowers for about £80 and do them myself, so would just like to get an idea of what would be a reasonable price for someone else to do it for me! Thank you xx
