Fiona: we're sending ours in July for our 2nd August wedding. I figured sending them during the school holidays might not be the best idea (we have two families coming, and a few people who work at schools) as they might put them to one side and forget about them. I don't want to send them any earlier, as again, I think people might forget, or assume it's for this year; and I don't want to send them much later as a few people we know book holidays about 11 months before; so obviously we want to catch them before then.

But TBF, most of our guests know the date anyway, and already have it in their diaries; so for us the save the dates are more of a formality than anything.

Well, we met up with two photographers over the last couple weeks, seeing the second one (and our favourite, had my eye on him for AGES!) last night. We got on great with him, he showed us a whole wedding and his photos are just amazing, and so consistent, so, we paid the deposit today! So excited; it feels 'real' now, I can just imagine the photos and can't wait!

I'm also FINALLY getting somewhere with getting my engagement ring re-made; I've got 2 quotes from 2 companies I like, and am getting another quote today, and then will go from there. Eek!

UPDATE: my engagement ring is now in the process of being re-made, and they're making my wedding band too! Should be able to go and see the cast at some point over the next 1-2 weeks.

We've officially asked OH's cousin to be a bridesmaid, and both her and her parents are really excited, which is lovely :-D

I also went to get my dress altered yesterday; it looks amazing all laced up properly and pinned to my size, really can't wait for it to be done! I also ordered a veil (cathedral length, single tier, plain ivory) so looking forward to seeing the whole look :-)

We've also pretty much sorted the flowers, just need to finalise what we want and pay the deposit.

    We've bought our chair sashes.

And finally, we've nearly finished making our save the dates!

So, a very productive couple of weeks!

I've been dress shopping. We went to six shops (my mum, my godmother and myself) and in four of them there was a clear favourite. Of those I think two stood out for me. The frustrating thing is that you have to try and imagine what it will look like when it's correctly fitted. One was a good fit apart from not fastening properly at the back, but as we liked a train from another dress they were saying they could combine the two, so I was trying to visualise it. The other was way too loose at the bust, so I was trying to imagine what it would be like when it was fitted and a bit higher up. Not many had sleeves which I do want, but a little lacy jacket seemed to work well. I need to go again and see them now that I know which elements of each were important. It's so frustating that you can't take photos. I can see why, they don't want their patterns being made by someone else more cheaply, but it would be so helpful if I could have photos of the four dresses that I liked next to each other on a computer screen.
I'm thinking I might well take one of the designed dresses rather than my MOH making it, because it seems that the seamstresses in the shops will pretty much tailor make it.

Elinor: sounds like a positive start on the whole! Also, I really do not get the whole no taking photos thing; the vast majority of dresses can be easily found on-line, so it's not like you can't get the designer and name of the dress, find a photo, and get it copied (if that's what they're worried about). I'm sure some shops do allow photos, so maybe try calling round and seeing if any do? Just a thought.

Linzi-jo: it's actually been all systems go for us recently! We have pretty much everything sorted now, just need to decide on a string quartet (have narrowed it down to two).

I went to see the cast of my rings a couple weeks ago and they're awesome! So pleased. Paid the deposit on the engagement ring last Tuesday, so they're now going to set the diamonds in it, and it should hopefully be ready in another couple of weeks or so; very very excited about getting it!

Also started looking at honeymoons, but we're not planning on booking just yet. It's looking like we'll be going to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, but I want to wait for flights to be released so I can price things up separately, and we're still toying with the idea of going back to the Riviera Maya region, but doing a split between all inclusive and an apartment/villa/B&B.

I'd ideally like pretty much everything sorted out by September, as I'll be starting to write then (I'm doing a PhD, and this first year has been mainly reading), as well as attending and presenting at conferences (hopefully), so, I don't need/want any distractions.

I have my dress! I found one I liked a couple of weeks ago from Alfred Angelo, but the sample was the wrong colour. I was planning to order one, and because that shop didn't have many bridesmaids dresses, I went to look in the other Alfred Angelo stockist in Cardiff. I mentioned in passing the dress I was going for, and the lady said they were selling their sample, which was the right colour, and only slightly too big. So I have now got a gorgeous wedding dress for £450.

That is so exciting! What a bargain, you lucky thing!

We nearly have everything sorted now, so are on target! Went bridesmaid dress shopping on Saturday for my 3 adult bridesmaids (MOH is wearing something different, as is OH's 11 year old cousin, so we'll sort theirs out nearer the time) and have decided on some gorgeous emerald green floor length chiffon dresses. Way over budget, but my BMs are all very thin (UK size 6), two are very pear-shape (as in, 30 inch bust and 35 inch hips), and one is very slim, and very tall (over 6 foot) and high-street dresses are too short! Managed to get 20% off, so paying £560 for the 3, plus alterations, which we're getting elsewhere and will probably cost another £150 (budget was £300 originally, then £450, so, we blew that lol). Didn't think we'd get green, but it was the colour which suited them all best, so I'm pleased, and they're all very happy :-)

My ring is ready, but I haven't picked it up yet (the anticipation is killing me lol). HOPEFULLY getting it in 2 weeks time.

And still haven't QUITE decided on the string quartet (will post about this separately as I'd appreciate advice!).

    We're 23rd August.

    Sorted to date:
    - Church booked
    - Village Hall booked
    - Table & chair hire arranged
    - Caterers booked
    - Bar booked
    - Band (inc DJ) booked
    - Save the Dates sent
    - All purple vintage china and tablecloths booked
    - Florist booked (inc chair covers and sashes for £1 each bargain- least we thought so!) - but have yet to decide what flowers we actually want!
    - Honeymoon booked
    - Photographer booked
    - Dress - chosen and paid for

We have a rough draft and idea of how our invites will look now (DIY'ing); I've seen a bridesmaid dress I like online that fits into my MOH very restrictive requirements but cannot find anywhere locally or even further afield that actually stocks it for her to go and try on. For favours we'll probably have a sweet buffet for guest to help themselves. But at the moment my biggest concern is the hall. We're on a tight -ish budget and when we looked round H2B was very positive and seemed happy about it so we booked it. Now he's complaining about all the plaques there and wants them hiding but there are sooooo many!!! So you may soon see a post on the forum with pictures pleading for ideas!!!!

Start looking now, as you might need to try quite a few before you find the one. If you do find it quickly, just check that it isn't about to be discontinued, and then you can delay ordering until later in case you find another one. Just keep checking back, as sometimes designers don't give too much warning when they're going to discontinue something. Alternatively order it when you've decided on it, and be prepared to pay a couple of hundred for alterations if you lose weight. They can easily take it in.

I bought mine in February angel claire! I wasn't planning on actually buying one then, just trying on styles but I fell in love with it! lol I would say start sooner rather than later, most places say that it takes 6-9 months for the dresses to come in after they are bought and ordered, and you will probably need alterations anyway so no harm in buying it sooner and still losing weight :) xxx

I've just ordered a veil. I wasn't planning on doing that, I was just browsing accessories on line and trying to decide what style of veil would work, but I came across one that had embroidery on it which could be in champagne, the same colour as the trim on my dress. I still had to choose the length, but after a lot of going back and forth I went for waist length. I contemplated chapel or cathedral length to complement the train on the dress, but I decided I didn't want to cover up the train; so I've gone for a veil that will stop at the point that the highlight of the dress starts. If I get it and decide I've got it wrong I can always sell it on ebay and try again. Hopefully though it will be just right when it comes through the post in a couple of weeks.

vodkachick: we're sending our save the dates soon. Reason being we want people to have plenty of notice so they don't book a holiday/can book time off work if necessary. Personally I think Xmas is a bit late, mainly because we plan to send our actual invites out 5-6 months before, within an RSVP date of 3 months before (to allow for stragglers, and so that we have time to invite other people we'd like to invite but can't due to capacity if we get declines). So, think about when you're sending your invite out: if you're sending them 4-5 months before, I'd either send the save the dates out October/November at the latest, or else skip them altogether.
