I saw a story (link on my wall) about a couple honeymooning in Cuba. They stayed at a military run hotel, and when they were leaving they were stopped and ordered to pay £4000 for a broken television, which they don't believe they broke. The husband's passport was withheld until he arranged for payment. They were advised that if they didn't pay there would be a formal investigation and they could be held. They advise that anyone staying in Cuba takes an inventory and photos of their room.
EDIT - TITLE HAS BEEN CHANGED
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.

We went to Cuba on our honeymoon- the people couldn't have been nicer. We and a few people we know who have been, had a really lovely time there and encountered no problems. Lala Is right, it could happen anywhere!

I agree this could happen anywhere. My OH and I always do spot checks and take pictures whenever we stay at a hotel or hire a car and in the past we found a used condom in one hotel (we got a bottle of high end wine and chocolates as an apology) and found a problem with one of the windows of a hire car we noted and reported immediately to car hire supplier. It may be a bit OTT but it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

There is a risk wherever you go in the world. Even London! Remember not long ago those tourists from the middle east were attacked in their hotel in central London? It was a nice hotel too. My advice to everyone is just be sensible when you're away, the occasional traveller I'm afraid does get unlucky.

what an unfortunate thing to happen to you on your honeymoon but like others have said it could happen anywhere at anytime and to anyone... you should always have your wits about you when travelling no matter where you are or how nice you think it is xx

We just came back from cuba and had no issues at all, every one was fantastic with us. The cuban people are very much setup for tourism and go out of their way for you. Perhaps this couple were very unlucky it just seems to be very different from the cuba we experienced last month!

thats terrible! just be warey werever you go...i was in egypt a few years back and the tour reps warned us about the locals when you go on the day trips to see the pyramids etc ...they will charge you ten egyptian pounds (£1 sterling) to get a ride on their camel...but when you want off some get smart and demand £100 sterling!! also the local police who operate at the pyramids offer to take your picture then demand money for return of your camera! scams go on everywhere!!
