I have booked and paid for one photographer but I have been asked weather my cousen (a photographer) can come along with her camera and take her own pictures for her portfolio in turn giving me a 2nd free phoographer and another free album.

She is very young and still studying photography at college and I would not feel confident letting her be the sole photographer. Her pictures are fabulous and she really does have a great talent. I know everyone has to start somewhere she needs experience. No-one would want to hire her as a wedding photographer if she has had never done it before, but, she cant get experience if no on hires her. Does this make sense.

I will have a word with my photographer to see if he minds but I think it would be a good experience for her. What do you guys think????

would be good for her to gain experience but i would speak to your photogapher about it as he may not want it. he may not like the idea of your cousin trying to get photos at the same time and telling people where to stand.

it would be good to have different views/styles of photos x

I would check with your photographer, but if she is going to stand back and snap away then I don't think it will be a problem! How many guests take their camera and snap thoughout the day anyway!

I will have a word with him. Obviously he will be in charge, I just thought if he is doing photos with the groom she could do photos of the bride and bridesmaid and visa versa. I would ask her to stay out of his way (in a nice way).

Maybe the professional could do all the formal shots and the student could just do more casual shots without the professional really knowing? More sort of reportage shots, relaxed images, evening ones etc. So you get the best of both worlds? She could just blend in and be part of the wedding party but taking more pictures!

I think that's a good idea, at least you have your professional photographer, they have to start somewhere.. And maybe she could do family shots while the pro is taking photos of you?

I have emailed him saying that if he said no then thats fine. I said my cousen is studying photography and would really like to have a go at wedding pictures and use them for her protfolio. I said 'I told her to stay out of your way'. She will be a guest too but taking photo's of her own to use in her protfolio.

I will just see what he says. He is a nice guy and I doubt he would have a problem with it.

I am just looking at her albums. She is very very young (17) but she is great. I cant even take photo's like that now never mind 8 years ago lol. She is arranging a showcase of her work at Ferini Gallery (where ever that is) but her dad is very very proud.

we are doing the same.... we have booked a photographer despite my friend offering photie service free. I know she takes bloody good pics of models for mags etc but we were concerned how well she would organise ppl. Therefore they are going to work together so she can create a portfolio and then if we like any shots our photographer didnt get then we can use hers. We wanted a photo booth but are concerned about the price so we may use her in the evening to set up a photo stall with a few funny dress up items and see how well that goes.

cant wait to be Mrs Evans less than 3 weeks woooo

I would recommend asking your photographer if he minds. Generally he probably will mind because she will potentially be competition for him in an already saturated market. But if he is a professional he will smile and say, its your wedding and he doesn't mind at all!
It may help to smooth the way if you say she is from out of town and is setting up a new studio in, say, Australia!

Yeah they are from totally different area's, she is from lowersoft (down South) and he is from durham (up North). Georgia does mostly fashion shoots but just wants to broaden her portfolio.

We are very proud of Georgia at the moment, she has managed to get an art gallery to show an exerbition of her work... now thats pretty good for a 17 year old

I used to be a photographer as long as she are not telling people where to stand and let your paid one just get one with it. I wouldnt have had a problem with that. Might be slightly confusing if they are both giving orders thought..

If a couple asked me if it was ok I would have a problem with it for certain reasons and allow it under certain circumstances.

A professional photographer is just that. A pro. The responsibility to produce stunning images is theirs and theirs alone.
A second shooter is a distraction to the proceedings, the guests and the couple unless they are working together as a team.

Also if the photographer is like the rest of us we will use the images in an online portfolio. Your friend may also do the same in the future and this can cause confusion to potential clients if they are seen by the same couples.

Further, the pricing structure of your tog.... are you getting all the images on DVD or are you buying prints from a gallery?
If the latter you definitely will have problems as the tog will quite rightly be concerned that they will lose business to the other shooter.

If it was me, I'd allow a second shooter providing they acted as my assistant and followed me around. I wouldn't want to find the other photographer distracting people for photos, unprofessionally, whilst I was trying to take other shots. The bride and groom pay me to give them my very best...something which I cannot do with a trainee wandering around under their own steam.

Another thing. I don't know about the majority of photographers but wedding and the pictures I take are my babies. I was at a wedding and another semi pro was there as a guest (they were great , no trouble at all), but when I saw their camera was the same 7k piece of kit as mine I felt like I was being cheated on!

Maybe I should ask her to take her pictures after the main photographer has gone. Maybe she can cover the evening see what she comes up with. I dont know how long they usually stay about after the ceremony and photo's.

I wouldnt pay my cousen to take the pictures and but she offered a few free prints in an album. The only pictures I will buy is off my pro. I want perfect pictures on the day and if this will put him off then she wont be doing it.....

We get a dvd with all of the pictures on as a slide show.

She does have an facebook account where she has some albums, I dont think weddings will be her thing, I think she just wants to try it as a way of broadening experience. She seems more into fashion shoots than weddings.

"No-one would want to hire her as a wedding photographer if she has had never done it before, but, she cant get experience if no on hires her. Does this make sense."

    Yes it makes sense.

Infact I'm currently looking for second shooters for this coming year, after all, we all had to start somewhere.

However, in the situation you've described, you're asking if it's ok for a cousin to shadow your professional and essentially, copy their shots. Personally I've got no issue with that as a pro (it's whole other discussion in itself), there will always be guests with cameras so you can't really say no to one more, but energetic students can be a problem distracting a couple when I'm working with them.

What I would suggest if you approached me would be this:

Your cousin is welcome to help me on the day, and by help I mean hold a reflector, take light readings etc, maybe take a few wider shots using my CF cards while I work with you on your photographs. Afterwards, once they can shoot to their hearts content on their own cards and I'll give them a few tips and pointers.

I find this is the best way of dealing with younger guests who want to study photography. Get them to assist the tog, learn stuff by watching, helping, and only then shoot some pics of you both (once the pro has what they need only).

I'm glad to read the OP at least asked before hand, good karma coming your way!

I asked but he said he would rather not have her there taking pictures. He likes to work quick and she would slow him down. Which is fine, I want him to do the best pictures he can and if it means no 2nd phoographer then thats fine..... Maybe if sh was really into the idea then I might see if she wants to take some he next day of just me and mark or something..... We will see

What you can suggest to her is that you and your H2B go with her a week or so after the wedding and have a rock the frock/trash the dress session.

This way she can practise and get some bridal images without the pressure and you can get some 'funky' images together.

If you're up for the shoot the next day before she leaves, go for it.

Or alternatively, take a trip to the smoke and do something bizarre with you in your dress (run across Parliament Square, shoot on Embankment, do some 'candids' on some overground tube stations).

I have to agree with the pros though that is isn't good having two photographers there that don't work together as you need focus and direction when having the shots taken or you will be looking at the wrong camera at the wrong time etc etc. There is a difference if she wants to do some candid informal shots etc as they won't interfere with the photographer but for the formal shots really you are best to leave it to the pro. She can always do some mock up shots the next day if you wanted?
