I think it depends how soon you are going to get married.. if it's 5 years time then I'd hold off until it's all booked. Things can change.
I asked my chief bridesmaid as soon as I got engaged but then did an official like box of gifts to ask them properly once my venue was sorted and I knew it was only a year away.
