So I'm thinking of buying my wedding dress I line as we are on a very low income at the moment but still want to get married, so we have a necessities only wedding budget! My family and friends think getting a dress online is a very bad idea and will end badly! Does anyone have any success stories or horror stories!

Mine came off eBay! In the shop it would have been £1800 on eBay I paid £60 as like yourself we were on a low budget, I went for a size bigger as it had adjustable back but didn't have to have it taken in or up!! Xx

I got one from hong kong for 40 quid in a rage of hating my actual dress. Its was gorgeous other than i underestimated the size of my butt so it didnt fit i woild say look at high street and uk based online first. Anywhere that does prom type dresses tends to have things that pass as a wedding dress in. My dress was 55 from quiz. Only reason i ended up getting a different one was that i wanted to stuff my face with the food and it was a long vintage lace bodycon style so wasnt feasible to eat lots and food was my priority

I would take a look at local groups selling wedding stuff. You can get a fab bargain there

I got mine online from Amazon, it came from China and for what it cost it is more than amazing. My advice is to go by the seller's size guide and if in doubt buy a bigger size. Even with the cost of alterations it's still hundreds of pounds cheaper than any shop. Know one will find anything like mine in this country.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Jul 2017

I ordered one and now Brides Beware have it as an example on their stand all over the uk along side the real version ...it was so bad they sent a courier to collect it lol but I tried the real dress on and it didn't suit me anyway so it's best to try them on you can get some beautiful sample dresses in bridal shops really quite cheap and there are re loved bridal boutiques also ... if your on a tight budget , from my personal experience it's not worth the risk but these ladies have had good experiences so maybe try the sites they recommend ... Good luck and best wishes x

I got mine go 40 pounds of asos.. it was a long white chiffon lace dress and beautiful. No one could tell it was so cheap and could always send it back if needed.
Check out asos and other stores for long white dresses if your not fussed on it being a princes style dress x

Personally recommend high street stores. Most do a wedding section. Several white ( if that's what you want ) dresses.
Bridal stores have sale/ samples they will sell too.
My friend bought online. It arrived three weeks before and was beyond terrible, despite good reviews. She is still trying to get her money back!
Don't risk it, if you have to question it, it's not worth the stress/ worry

Avoid any from China & they try to hide it by putting co.uk ...... Poor fabric & quality , my girlfriend attempted to buy one & it was no good & she had to buy a 2nd one !!
Look at instead Elsie's attic , Lindy bop , chi chi clothing , monsoon , next , debenhams , house of Fraser ....& especially get one in August summer sales !!

I bought online. A gorgeous gown for a mere £69. My advice for buying online is do it in plenty of time in case for any reason it doesn't work out. This leaves you with time to replace or have it altered. Check reviews thoroughly. Make sure the seller doesn't sell rubbish. Pay by PayPal! This allows you to get a refund easily in case of anything bad happening.

For every one horror story I've seen on these types of pages, I've seen 100's gushing about their beautiful bargains.

Good luck!

Ordering online can be hit and miss. There are some really cheap second hand dresses just to give you a second option, I know some people wouldn't want second hand but just a thought. I had mine from China. It was a bargain. Same dress in a bridal shop cost £800, then fitting. I got it made to measure for £150 delivered within 3 weeks. No dramas. I gave my own measurements and added some to it, but made sure I had a lace up back so I had some give in it, and it was OK. I won't say the quality was as good as a bridal shop, cos it wasn't, but no one guessed on the day and I felt fabulous in it. Best of all, cos it was cheap, I didn't care if it was trashed on the day or not.

You should be asking for the horror stories too then weigh out how many horror stories there are for every success story. I have a business in the wedding industry and believe me there are so many horror stories. Some do get lucky but a lot of brides don't... Maybe look at a used dress! Due to China copies designer dresses are being bought for thousands then sold for pennies.

UKbride Administrator

Then had the hassle of trying to get them to take back & refund, which never happened as they just cease communication & refuse to respond. Was all most upsetting. I ended up going to Wed2b & found a beautiful dress off the peg. It did mean upping my dress budget from £99 to £499, but figure I can scrape a little back by selling it on after the wedding. :-) xx
