Right lovelies, hair and make-up. Help! I really hadn't accounted for how expensive this is, i'm really rubbish when it comes to hair and make up so need someone to do it but i cant justify £350-400 for it. My other issue is that i have a noon ceremony and so need them to come to me, i cant be going to a salon. I don't even want anything fancy, literally some natural waves and it up off my face and then natural make up. What is everyone else doing/did?

Sounds a lot for one person. I done my own makeup, I wanted to look like me, not like someone else, but had my hair done properly which was £75 for trial and the day.x

I just used my normal hairdresser and a beautician who is good at make up, if you go for A hair/make up who specialises in weddings you will pay a lot. I paid £50 for trial and day for hair and I'm not sure for make up as I paid 1 price for everything (nails, brows, trial, day etc) they come to me at the venue as well. X

Any friends that can do it? They were bridesmaids however my sister did my hair and my friend did my make up xx

What about paying for a lesson in MAC for your make up? Hair probably wouldn't be too expensive on top!

When u put wedding on the end of it they instantly bump prices up I'd just get a mobile hair n make up person n not tell them it's ur wedding if it's ur own make up n hair shouldn't cost that much I'm paying less than that for me, mob, and 5xbridesmaids

I done my own make up but paid £45 at a salon for my hair and cost me £25 each for my bridesmaid and maid of honour so it cost me £95 in total to get all 3 of our hair done x

I went to a benefit make up counter in Debenhams I booked in first appoint and you only have to buy some makeup after like lipstick or mascara no other charge.

does this price include your wedding party

You pay for what you get......what people forget is that a soft natural look that is going to last all day and all night takes preparation and therefore time. The people who do this well are highly trained justifying a higher charge, those that charge a lot less generally haven't had much if any training. Always have a trial!

I got a student from a local 6th form college. Was much cheaper and helps them as they get the experience. It was.perfect for me x

My hair cost £100 - to be fair it was amazing and took my hairdresser 3 hours to do! She came to the house as I had a noon ceremony. Make up was £150 for myself, 4 bridesmaids and my mum by a local beautician who also came to the house. Bridesmaids did their own hair (apart from my sis-in-law as I did hers!) x

I am a beauty therapist and I do make up, I wear make up every day for work, I want someone to take the stress away of doing it. Definitely shop around, google the life out of "local make up artists" speak to local salons, also speak to the local college, they often have make up courses being run through out the year, as well as the standard beauty courses, the same for hair dressers. Good luck x

That's a lot of money for just the bride! I'm paying for make up for me and four bridesmaids and it comes to about £200, I'm lucky that my Aunty is a hair dresser and has offered to style the bridesmaids (I have really short hair so barely need anything doing to it) see if you know anyone, friends of family, who could do it for you...or looks elsewhere for quotes. You've not mentioned if you've been quoted for you and bridesmaids or just you, if it's just you then the price you've given is really high! And it's custom for the make up artist to come to your venue anyway so don't even worry about that...just look for wedding make up artists/hairdressers near to where you're getting married.

Yes that sounds expensive. I had a make up artist come to my house at 10am for a 2pm wedding. She done my make up, my mums & 4 bridesmaids & it cost £215 x

That sounds expensive!!! Mine is £75 for makeup and £50 for hair, bridesmaids £45 for makeup and £40 for hair! And they're coming to my wedding venue!

I have 8 ladies iny bridal party and have got all our hair and makeup for £240 quid. I also have a noon wedding so they are shutting the salon and coming out to us. They have been fantastic in the lead up.
I would say to shop around smaller salons to see what deals they can do rather than going to makeup artists.
I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself as we all know the feeling when you are getting ready and your makeup doesn't go right! You will need to feel pampered and relaxed x

Look about and see if your friends and family no people for me and 3 others our hair is £50 total and for make up again thats 4 of us and 4 trials £100 and she's amazing, don't just pick the first person you see look about and ask people ❤ x

My hair and make up cost me £140 and the lady came to me. I did have a trial before this that I paid for separately x

I have learnt some fab techniques off of YouTube. Would you trust one of your bridesmaids or a relative to copy a technique from there? I'm lucky enough that my mum is a Beauty Therapist, but to save money I would definitely consider that. I also agree with some of the above comments about contacting colleges to have a student come and do it for you. MUA's spend a lot of money on their kit and can charge an absolute fortune, which is fine if you can justify it, but not if you can't.

UKbride Administrator

If that's just for you that's silly prices, ask for recommendations on a Facebook wedding site in your area then you can compare work and quotes.
My make up trial was £45 separate but for me, mother in law and 3 maids on the day makeup is £150.
Hair if you have no luck shopping around then ask a level 3 student at local college.

My hair & make up is costing £110... And then bridesmaids is £125 (for all their hair).
Our wedding is at 12, and the ladies are coming about 8am to set up & get everything done. If the price you've said is just for you then that's a price that seems very over the top, I'd deffo have a look round.

Often you can ask higher level college students/ apprentices to do them at a much cheaper rate as it looks really good for their portfolio. X

Youtube and Pinterest if you want to do it yourself. Loads of great DIY tutorials but make sure you practise a LOT beforehand if you do this route. Also have some spare hands who have practised with you before on the day just in case!

i went to my hairdressers for my hair was there early even though our ceremony wasnt till half two :) i also did my make up myself was alot easier and stress free i suffer from really bad acne and rosea so a few months before i went to my local boots to no7 and a lovely lady showed me how to do my make up for the day/matched my skin tone with the right foundation etc was so much easier than having someone try to match it/cover it up on the day :) altogether buying the make up and my hair was less then someone doing both would say less than £80 i spent :) this was me on my day x

My weeding ia very simple and low key. And like people have said I want to look like me.
My plan is to go and have it done at say the beauty stands;
benifit, number 7, bare minerals etc and and see which one i like the best and then going to do it myself. Without tooting my own horn I am good at make up so I just want some really decent products that will last all day. :)
I would rather spend say £150-£200 on really good products and them they are mine to use again xx

I think I had my hair and make up including trial then 3 Bridesmaid hair and make up for about that, maybe even slightly less.

Shop around is my best advice! I got similar quotes and decided that was rediculous as they literally put the price up by x10 from what they usually charge for hair and makeup. I found local people that were just starting out, or didn't add extra just because it was a wedding, also ask your own hairdresser if they do hair ups as they are usually cheaper than someone "wedding dpecific." My hairdresser charges about £25 each for hair up and said she would come to us!

i did mine myself. there are some good tutorials on youtube . maybe get your brides maids to help? and practice!!!

I did my own because I'm a trained M.U.A. But if you're close enough to Brighton East Sussex I'll do it for £50 plus travel expenses as a nod to all those who helped me stick to my own wedding budget (because i like to pay it forward)

Try approaching a college that does a beauty qualification course , the final year students I'm sure would jump at a chance in exchange for pictures they can put in a portfolio

Have you talked to the girls on boots/ house of Fraser make up stands many of them can do your make up in store and while they are 'Trailing' your look you can talk about your wedding ... a lot of them do occasion make up on the side so could be good to talk to and get details of

I paid £70 for my makeup (she came to the hotel) and my hair was about the same. Had a trial months before so that spread the cost a bit. Worth paying it though, takes the stress out of the day when those things are taken care of.

Mines £350 but that's a package deal for me, my mum and up to 4 bridesmaids hair and make up is an extra £50 each I think

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 18 Apr 2017

That sounds very expensive! I'm paying £90 for bridal makeup including a trial and less than £50 for hair. Im using my regular hairdresser so I know she's great and a recommended makeup artist. Makeup prices varied a lot when I was looking but as long as you can see reviews or get someone that's been recommended you'll be fine.

When I was a bridesmaid we had someone (I think she was a teacher) from the hair and beauty department of the local college. She did lovely hair and didn’t charge the earth!
