Engagement Party

Hello ladies, my partner and I have been engaged for a couple of years nowand because we didn't have a date in mind at the start we never had an engagement party. My partners mum would love for us to have one but I feel its a bit late to have one now? We did think about maybe having one a year before our 'wedding date' and then handing out save the dates as little favours for the guests maybe? But we don't know if this might sound a bit silly to do?
