Hi, is anyone doing their own makeup for their wedding? Everyone I've spoken to tells me that I HAVE to get it professionally done but I just don't feel like myself when I get it done by someone else. I'd much rather do it myself so I know me and my H2B like it and I know I look like me. If you have done your own make up for your wedding do you have any tips on what products to use etc? Thanks so much.

No you don’t have to get a professional to do your make up if your happy with the look you can do yourself! It’s your big day so have it as you want. I did my own hair and make up for my first wedding. This time will be using my best friend who is a make up artist and will be my bridesmaid x

I'm 100% doing my makeup myself! Being a makeup artist myself it feels weird someone else doing my makeup 😂
I will be getting someone to do my hair though :)

I’m doing my own! And my own hair, I’m getting married abroad though. Even if I wasn’t I’d still do it myself. I know what you mean about not feeling like yourself and I couldn’t imagine feeling that way on my wedding day. Stick to your guns and your makeup! It’s your wedding last thing you want is to look back at photos and hate your makeup! Xx

One of my best friends is doing my makeup. I like a very natural look and know she will do it just right! It’s your wedding, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. My mums doing my hair too xx

My friend done mine, we went make up shopping weeks before and literally tried everything before going home and testing styles of make up. It looked professional and I loved it so didn't matter what other people thought x

I’d never had my make up done by MUA but I had a trial and then said what I wanted which was toning down x

my bridesmaids and i all did our own makeup! that way, you can do exactly what you want! mine was just from avon and primark! dont think i even spent £10 on makeup

My sister did mine, because I know nothing about face paints Kate Middleton did her own though, nothing wrong with wanting to look like you! Xxx

i did mine myself n i suffer from really bad rosea everyone said and still says now how good it was and asks how i covered it so well i just used no7 products but few weeks before got one of the lovely ladies show me how to apply etc x

I’m doing my own. Went to boots had colour match done got some lovely no7 stuff that lasted well over a day. Never used no7 before but it’s definately my choice now. It’s a bit more expensive but you use less and it stays on. And really light. I spent £80 on everything you can think of and dumped all my old stuff

Plus I think someone else messing with you on your wedding day makes you hotter and more stressed out and at least you know how you like your make up

I’m a trained MUA so of course I’m doing my own! I would recommend getting some lessons from various sources as wedding makeup needs to be a little different from day due to lighting, lasting power, flash back etc. Lessons are a great way to pick up tips and tricks so you can feel your best on the big day

I cant afford to get anyone else to do it, they charge extortionate prices. X

I did my own make up, I went to boots No7 and asked for a some tips. I couldn’t recommend them enough! They really helped me get what I need for my day ️. It’s a bit more expensive then some but not as expensive as some others that get recommended. Go for it, you know what you like. Xx

I’m doing my own. If you end up doing your own... just make sure you don’t have foundation containing spf or titanium dioxide! As it causes flashback x

I’m doing my own, I had my trial last month and ended up with bacterial conjunctivitis! and it looked awful! So I’ve been out and got lots of new make up and watched some you tube tutorials so I kind of know what I’m doing, it’ll be fine 🤞🏻 3 weeks to go! x

I wish I had done my own, my MUA was amazing but I didn’t look like myself . It’s hard to convey the picture you have in your head, only you can know how you want it to look. I also didn’t like having someone else’s hands and arms in front of my face for almost 2 hours, I could barely breathe

Megan Newcombe
Megan Newcombe 9 Jul 2018

I have had a free tutorial at no7, it was really good. I know nothing about make up so she told me how to apply everything and all the tips, and things that did and didn't suit me. No pressure to buy either, she even sent me away to see how I felt in the make up after a few hours.
You spend a bit but you have it then, so much better value.
She also explained to me the difference between your 'usual' night out make up and wedding is that it needs to last longer, and also how it will look in pics, not flattening your face and making you look like a moonface in the pics, which I hadn't thought of before!

I don't wear make up ever so not wasting money on a makeup artist but my photographer recommended some concealer/foundation (as i am very pale and do get dark circles) which one of my bridesmaids will be helping me with. I'm using loreal, my photographer sent me this list https://www.instyle.com/how-tos/best-foundations-banish-ghostface-flashback-your-photos#1269636 (something about avoiding "flashback").

I did my own for the same reasons, didn’t want to look like I’d come straight off of the Mac conveyer belt , I bought all new stuff based on recommendations. I would defo say get a good primer, I used all urban decay as it looked really light and dewy but still gave really good coverage, it’s also spf free which u want so there’s no flash back on photos. urban decay stay all night spray is amazing too, keeps everything in place all day no matter what other product u use x x x

For foundation definitely Estée Lauder double wear. You can have your skin match done in Debenhams. It’s expensive but you only need a little bit so it lasts ages. My family recommended it to me and it’s definitely worth it. I’ve not had my wedding yet but I wore it for my bridal shower and it lasted from 1pm until I took it off at 1am. You can ask for a sample so you can test it at home before purchasing it.

I'm no good at makeup and I have sensitive skin, I also couldn't justify paying so much for a look that I might not like (some friends of mine have had disasters with makeup done!) So my sister did mine like she would normally do. It's what you want and how comfortable you'd feel. I wouldn't have had any make-up of it wasn't for my sister so do what makes you happy, I'm sure you'll be a beautiful bride what ever you decide x

My friend who is rlly good at makeup and has done myn before is doing mine and we’re planning lots of trails before hand. A good friend of mine booked several of the free makeovers that the makeup counters do and took her sister along to watch how it was all done then her sister did it on the day she looked lovely x

I did my own for ours and it turned out pretty well! I got false lashes done beforehand though, my advice is do some trials on yourself and write down in steps what you need to do, That way you won't forget anything on the day! Xx

I went to clinque counter at Debenhams with my MOH - they did so many tutorials with her and we recorded all of it. Bought the make - up and we practiced a few times but now I have good quality make up to use - it's definitely worth using good quality make up and if you buy it you can keep it so you're not spending for one day!

I did my own, cos I love makeup and like you said if someone else does it you don't look like you... I went to a few of the beauty counters in Debenhams and got a couple of makeovers to try out the products and test the wear of the foundation etc and got samples of as much as possible.

I'd totally recommend Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray, to put over the top and set it all, also their eyeshadow primer is excellent for keeping your eyes crease free all day and night :)

I did my own & have zero regrets. I don't tend to wear a lot of makeup anyway. I knew what look I was going for (understated & natural) so watched a few youtube vids for tips & practiced a couple times to gain confidence & make sure I knew what order to do things. My BMs were there when I put it on & they helped me with choosing eye shadow colours. I felt beautiful & confident all day (& best of all, like myself!) & photos all looked amazing. You absolutely go for it if that's what you want to do & don't let anyone force you into anything you don't want. My product tip is to use a fixing spray - Makeup revolution's is good & only £5 from superdrug. Good luck!

I never wear make up so for me its a must, but also as i dont wear make up, i am worried, as i need it as natural as possible otherwise my groom might not recognise me haha however my bridesmaids have opted to do their own... if you feel confident, save the money.

I did my own for my first wedding and felt so much better for it, just my normal going out make up, nothing fancy and I got loads of compliments that I didn't look too plastered on like it can end up lookibg when done professionally. Did make it slightly difficult with the nervous shakes though lol xx

I felt the same. I like doing my own make up and knew how I would like it. Plus I don’t like other People doing my eyes. I would practice a lot if you can and see what products you like. I went to Bobbi Brown to ask for advice and had to spend a certain amount but they did one session for free. Lots of places say about using a non sps foundation to avoid light in pictures. I had a stick one whose was pretty light coverage. And although it didn’t last too long after the formal photos I wasn’t that bothered! I ended up spending a lot of new make up anyway. But I enjoyed learning and practicing and I still have all the make up to use now!

I'm doing my own,I used to model and hated getting my makeup done professionally,I would always go in loo and adjust! For all day lasting I cannot recommend using the 'baking' technique enough! Lots of you tube video showing you how but it only really works if you leave it at LEAST 10 full mins and a good finishing spray, but don't use any new products that you haven't tired out a good few times beforehand! :) x

I felt exactly the same! I just had my hair and make up trial and the woman couldn’t have been nicer. I told her I didn’t want too much and I felt amazing. Has taken off so much pressure and I can’t wait for the day now! You just tell them exactly what you want 🙂

I am going to do my own. But I am going to buy some nice make up. I often look on the Internet and I have bought some fabulous gift sets from Elizabeth Arden, I would rather spend the money on Make up, which you get to use again than an Artist who make you up but you feel conscious because it's not you.

I never wear make up but I do get red-faced and blotchy. I'd like to feel 100% on our big day, so will be paying a pro to do mine, whereas my bridesmaids are doing their own as they do such a fantastic job on theirselves.
If you can trust yourself to do it on top of the nerves/anxiety, go for it! If not, teach a pro how to get it the way you like it and enjoy being pampered on the day

I thought about doing my own but it doesn’t work as well on camera I went for one of those days with my cousins where they do you make up and take photos and they came out so well it swayed me you can still be really natural and the pictures are honestly worth it as they can make you glow in all the right places xx good luck

I did my own as I was getting married abroad and couldn’t get any recommendations. Im having a proffessional but only cuz im a lazy git i dont really wanna do jack on my wedding lol.. i found using a foundation with no spf is less ashy so bobbi Brown foundation stick and for no flashback use hourglass veil powder it promises no flashback .. id invest in going to a counter and getting tips and tricks on application and trial the foundations some do 7 day trials, depending on yoyr budget id buy at least some good quality makeup as it lasts but mascara and eyebriw pencils like maybeline are decent... waterproof mascara will last all day

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 11 Jul 2018

You don’t have to get it done professionally. I think Mac and Dior have great, long lasting products for the big day. If you book a makeup lesson with any of the beauty counters, the cost usually goes towards buying their products and you can try out doing it for yourself, with their guidance. It can help you create the look you want, while still feeling like you xxx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 11 Jul 2018

I'm going to do my own, you don't have to have a professional spend the money elsewhere. I would recommend using something you know as you don't want your skin to be irratied on your wedding day. Also use sonething with no SPF so you don't get flash back. I love benefit, nars foundation & naked 3 eye plate has some lovely eyeshadow shades :) also look at YouTube videos

I had mine done professionally and loved it it was so natural and light I felt like myself. Not all MUA do heavy make up x
