Fellow brides. My brain is having a meltdown trying to figure this out so I'm hoping you can help. We're beginning to look at honeymoons and wanting to get passports organised. I had a passport that ran out of date without renewal. I also would like to get my new passport in my married name. Do I need a completely new passport, photo, etc. Or do I renew my old one with a new name? And, can I get the passport in my married name before the wedding? Sorry for all the questions but the government website hasn't really been helpful?! Thanks everyone!

I think you can apply for it in your married name but it won't be able to be used until after you are married, others may be able to clarify this. X

Yes you can apply for a new passport early. The info should be in your marriage ceremony pack if you are using registrars. I don't know about church weddings. But I know you can apply for a new one a few months before once you've given notice x

If you go onto the government website it says you can apply up to 3 months in advance of your wedding day in your new name but your passport won't be valid until after the ceremony. Also some countries won't provide a visa for post-dated passports so check with their embassy or consulate first xxxx

You need to get a form from the post office that your vicar or the person marrying you fills in and signs it will be dated the day after your wedding x

I've read that you can, but within 5 days of the date that your married send your marriage certificate off or something. Give the passport office a ring they will explain it to you :) x

You can apply 3 months before the marriage date. You need to have a form completed by registrar of vicar to confirm date of marriage. You wouldn't be able to use this passport until after date of marriage x

You can apply for it in your married name but wont be able to use it until the day after the wedding. There's a form that your local post office can give you for the priest or registrar to fill out and you send this with your passport renewal form. You will need a new photo if your old passport is out of date. Xxx

Another answer I've seen to this question is that some brides have actually booked and gone away still using their maiden name....and then changed their name after.

I've just renewed my passport (due to me losing it, then finding it again) . Like others have said you can apply for a passport in your married name as long as it's 3 months or less until the wedding . The registra has to sign one part of the form. I couldn't change mine as I had already booked my honeymoon under my maiden name. X

I did this last year. You need a new passport and photo. And you need the registrar to fill in a form for you. You can apply for your new passport under your married name up to 3 months before your wedding date. But your passport won't be valid to use until the day you get married. Hope that makes sense.

You can get a passport which is valid from your wedding date. I would apply for a new one. I had to send a new photo xx

You can continue to travel in your maiden name even after you're married as long as you book the holiday in your maiden name. I did this for a year after I got married as my passport didn't go out of date and didn't want to waste money on a new one if I could use my old one. Lol. X

You can apply for passport 3 months before wedding but need register Victor to sign the form before applying

I got married last July, my passport had expired and I needed a new one to go on my hen do abroad in the April; so I renewed my old passport (still in maiden name) - the passport is valid for 10 years so even though I have changed all my name and ID's to my new name; I've left my passport as it still has 9 years left on it (you have to pay full price for a new one with new name!)
We've booked our honeymoon for next year and I've just made sure we booked it in my maiden name.. it doesn't matter.. I'll just change my passport name once it runs out.

If your passport ran out n you didn't renew ,you will need to apply for a new passport ( it's the same price anyway )
You can apply for a passport in you married up to 3mths prior to your marriage but it is not valid to travel on until the day of your marriage.

If you did renew your passport you can travel as long as the name on the ticket matches the name on your passport , some people report that you can travel if your passport is in maiden name but ticket in married name as long as you are carrying a copy of marriage certificate ...THIS IS NOT TRUE and you WILL be refused travel

I changed mine 3 years ago before my wedding. The only issue we were told about was if you wanted to hire a car on honeymoon was that your driving licence and passport would be in different names. I took my marriage cert too just in case but it wasn't a problem at all!

As others have said if you get the registrar to complete the paperwork, get new photo etc you can get a passport in your married name ready for you to use on your honeymoon.
If you want to just renew your passport using your maiden name, you can do that now, new photo, you can do that & use it for the next 10yrs but the travel docs/tickets HAVE to match so, so long as you always book under the same name you will be fine!

Please don't think that sending your passport application with a letter saying you need it for honeymoon will mean it's processed any faster .....so allow plenty of time especially at busy times of the year ...

You will need to get a new passport and provide an up to date photo. I just done mine in my married name before the wedding. You need a form that you get from post office that you fill in the your registrar fills in. If you old passport is still valid you send that too and then they send your new passport valid from day of wedding but you can no longer use the passport in your maiden name either before the wedding. Hope this helps x

Hi,

I've literally just done this (getting married 9th Sept - passport ran out in Jan this year).

I completed a renewal form and sent with it a change of name form - I had to fill out one part of this and my vicar did the other bit. Had to send it by post (you can only get the postal renewal form in the post office, but can download the name change form online from gov.uk). I also had to send in an up-to-date photo (you have to do this with a renewal due to change in appearance over 10 years) but didn't need it signing by anyone as my appearance hasn't altered dramatically (apart from massive dark circles under my eyes and general haggardness!!) The passport is in my new married name and will be valid from the date of the wedding.

A few notes on completing the forms:
1) You complete the renewal form in your MARRIED name and sign it with your MARRIED signature (practise this in advance!)
2) You complete the name change form in your MAIDEN name and sign it with your CURRENT signature
3) Where it asks for an address on the name change form, you put the address of the passport office you're sending the renwal form to, NOT your home address (this can be found on the envelope that is supplied with the renewal form by the post office)

Hope that helps. If you provide a mobile number on the form, the passport office will send you text updates to let you know it's been received and the progress. I got mine through in 10 days.

Good luck and congratulations in advance :-)

You can renew your old passport but selecting 'change of name' on the application form. You can change your passport into your married name up to 3 months before the wedding but you need your vicar to fill out a small form that you will need to include in your passport application it's called a PD 1&2. Please be aware though that if you do this the passport will only be valid from the day of your wedding so you wouldn't be able to use it for a last minute getaway before the wedding etc. Any questions just ask, I work for passport office

I think the others have answers your question and the question about your passport. This may seem obvious, but I know other ladies that have made this mistake. Just remember to book your honeymoon in the name you will be using.... they won't let you travel if you plane ticket is in a different name to you passport. Xx

Mine was out of date so I needed new photo, signed etc, and applied for a new one in my new name. There's a number on the application form for queries, I called them and they talked me through what I needed. It was the standard price for renewal and changing my name £71 I think?

You can legally use your married name on your passport from up to 3 months before the wedding, they say this so you can have it all ready for your honeymoon, I would suggest just starting a whole new passport :)

Hello I have just done this mine ran out two years ok so I renewed it last week I filled the form out as my married name and then you need to ask the post office for another form which the vicar needs to sign to say you are getting married by them on that date you will not be able to use passport until the day of wedding also I renewed my photo but didn't need it signed as I look the same lol I haven't read the comments so sorry if someone has already answered. 😂

Carla N and Clair T are competely correct (not that others aren't). However, do not necessarily take what the passport office say as gospel if you call. I spoke to someone recently that did not know anything about being able to fill in forms beforehand by the vicar or registrar in order to get one in your married name. I was only phoning as my passport expires a little over 3 months before my wedding and I wondered if I could just get the name changed if I renewed now or would have to pay the full fee again, if that makes sense.

There is a form online and you can change your passport to your married name up to 3 months before your wedding but obviously can not use it until you are married 😁

Hi. It depends on long ago your passport expired, if the pics changed much etc. But.....the name change means you'll probably have to go through a postal application again. Since its expired its easier to do it all at home he same time. Passport office are really quick right now.

U can apply for a new passport in what will be ur married name, 3 months prior to the wedding. You need a form signed by vicar or registra that is going to marry u saying as such but it wont be valid until ur wedding day :) x

Mine will run out before the wedding, rather than renewing and then changing again it appears to be cheaper to change my name by deed poll and apply in my new name.

UKbride Administrator

You can apply for a post dated passport in your married name up to 3 months before your wedding day. It will only become valid on the day after you have signed the marriage schedule.

When you get your passport form there is a second form that you need that is completed by the person performing the ceremony and this gets included with your application form.

Be careful in booking your honeymoon in your married name and a post dated passport. We booked to go to America less than 48 hours after our wedding but we couldn't apply for the visa until the day of the wedding because it wasn't yet a valid passport, something we weren't aware of. Luckily my husband applied for it just after midnight on the day of the wedding but there was a very real possibility of me having to beg the us embassy to allow us tro travel after spending all of the money that we did on flights and hotels xx
