What do you do to look after your ring?

My original engagement ring has had a bit of batter, it's lost a stone and needs replating. I was going to keep it but found a gorgeous bridal set when ring shopping and have now ordered that.

I am going to keep hold of my original ring and sometime after the wedding I will get it fixed and wear it on my other hand.

However, I really want to take care of my new rings and make sure they don't end up suffering. What is the proper care of a ring?

Also I'm slightly worried about taking them on honeymoon, will they survive the swimming pools and suncream ect.?

You really should take them off to wash up etc etc, but I'd speak, with the jewellers in regards to care of them. They will be able to help

I hardly ever take mine off.. wash up wearing it (although I usually wear rubber gloves), do the cleaning wearing it etc. The only time I take it off is when on holiday, not because I'm scared of damaging it but because I hate getting sun cream all clogged up in it lol. I keep it off during the day for this reason and then pop it on again in the evening :-)

I give mine a clean every few months by popping it in a cup of hot water mixed with washing up liquid, leaving it to soak for 30 mins, then rinsing off under cold water using an old toothbrush/cloth to dislodge the dirt. My ring probably does need replating but as I have nothing else white gold to compare it to, I can't actually get too excited about it as it still looks fine to me. You can't avoid that though.. will always need replating eventually. It is 3 years old now though, has never been replated and is still in great condition :-)

I always take mine off in the shower, washing up, cleaning etc. It's white gold and I have only had it since last Christmas and already had it replated and it needs doing again but there's nothing you can do to avoid that.

I had my engagement ring replated a few days before the wedding, and didn't wear it until the day, so they both looked new. I just soak them in soapy water now, and will have them replated once a year

Toothpaste is also good for cleaning them

I've heard you shouldn't use toothpaste as it is too harsh and will eventually end up damaging it.

Oooops, never done any damage to mine but then I don't clean them as often as I should. I got my engagement ring done properly just before the wedding

I wondered this too. I only take it off of I wash up and the water is a bit minging lol. If its only a few things I keep it on though. I always wear mine. I'm going to get it cleaned just before the wedding but othwise had nothing done to it yet other than resizing.

I tend to take mine off when going swimming, at night time etc, but it's still a bit battered. I got a top tip from a friend to keep them sparkly though. A quick wipe with those wipes you get in indian restaurants after the meal keeps the diamonds and the metal sparkly apparently.

It shouldn't be too expensive to have the stone replaced in your original ring though.

When I wash my hands I also hold my ring under the tap and have a quick wipe, then make sure it's dried properly with a towel :-)

I'm going to try Flossie's suggestion of boiling water and washing up liquid. It removes grime from dishes so hopefully will remove all the grime caught in my engagement ring. My wedding ring is a plain band.

I know what you mean about those wipes Charlotte. I also think the foam soap in public toilets makes my diamonds so sparkly too.

I always get scared of washing my hands with my ring on, mainly because it means I'll have to get it replated sooner, so take it off at home but have noticed that the soap in work makes it lovely and sparkly!

I used to be so careful when I got my ring, making sure I never wore it when showering or washing up etc but now I am less careful. I'd suggest making sure you only wear it when not washing up etc and don't get cream all over it.
